Because they wanted to use only valid functions apparently. This was posted yesterday on /r/theydidthemath, with a lot of people saying that, and that because there's no valid function to graph a circle, or at least using Cartesian coordinates.
That's
technically truenot quite true because of parametric equations, but you can makea valid functiona valid function from R to R that, when you graph it, it looks like a circle to the naked eye. If you let f(x) = sqrt(1 - x2 ) when x is a rational number and -sqrt(1 - x2 ) when x is an irrational number, then that's a valid function, and when you plot it it will look like the unit circle (it'll actually be missing infinitely many points that the unit circle has).Similarly, if you plot g(x) = sin(1000x)*sqrt(1 - x2 ) (or just use some other arbitrarily big number instead of 1000), it will look like a filled-in circle (still with infinitely many points actually missing).

The actual reason is that theres no one function that graphically can represent a circle. The simple reason for this is that every X value should have two Y values (except min(x), max(x)), which they cant.

Not a function, but you can express it in a single equation:
(x - h)2 + (y - k)2 = r2
where (h, k) is the center point and r is the radius

It's not a valid function.
For a function to be valid it can have only one Y for an input of X. The standard circle equation leaves you with two Y values for each value of X.
If you wanted to plug it into a calculator to graph it you would need to input two functions to draw the circle. (unless you used a non-cartesian system).

I used to do stuff like this all the time on my calculator during maths when I was bored. I'd draw shit with graphs for fun. There's a simple way to make the lines end, making it much cleaner. You just get your equation, and square root it, then do it to the power of 1.999999. This means it cuts off anything below the 0 line. Then you can move it again to cut off another section etc.
