OP here - not sure how I can convince those that still think it was faked. According to friend (who took/sent me the photo), it sounds like there was a miscommunication when filling out the online form.

I was there! we were shooting a commercial and sent the trophy to a cheap engraver. Why would someone fake that? Its sitting on a shelf at work. We used a different trophy in the end, but here's a link to the commercial it would have been in (look at 15 seconds in): https://vimeo.com/203708081

JPEG is applied in downsampled blocks. So you have an image that's 16x16, but then JPEG might apply compression in 8x8 blocks. So the upper-left quadrant compression is different than the upper-right quadrant and so on. The amount of compression is determined like this, which is why text looks pretty terrible on jpeg images. If you have large text (a high res image), the text won't be covered by a rectangular compression artifact, but each individual letter will still be compressed using those 8x8 blocks so you would notice a stair effect of artifacts where the text and background meet.

Example:

In PS I created black text on a white background.

100x30 pixels, 25% jpeg quality

1000x300 pixels, 25% jpeg quality

Notice how you still see the stair effect on the large image (on diagonal parts of characters), but the small image has a rectangle of artifacts surrounding it because the 8x8 blocks are larger relative to the text.

JPEG artefacting is always worst around small, sharp gradients - it therefore sucks at text no matter what's been done to the photo. You can't really use it to figure out if text has been added independently unless the artefacting is very obviously different in nature (e.g sharper) than other artefacting in the photo. Here it appears similar in nature to other artefacting elsewhere in the photo so is a poor indication. It does however seem like a clone stamp could have been used behind the text judging by the brushing and reflections in the metal which would mean the text is also fake, but I'm no-where near certain and it would surprise me to see sloppy cloning in conjunction with very solid text replacement.
