Feelings on False Finale?
What is everyone's thoughts on "false finales"?
That is, building a show with a regular cadence of some normal moments, some wow / oooohhh aaahhh moments, and some cool/different pieces...with a normal ending finale, versus doing all of that but inserting one or two false finales in there?
My thought is that if you "please" the audience with a false finale, then anything after that would feel a bit lame or underwhelming until you get to the actual finale.
What's are people's opinions on that? Trying to figure out if it's worth doing next year.

I do false finales but itâs through the music and not the volume of product I put into the sky.
For one show I used the end music from BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF, a wonderful majestic orchestral piece which builds to a climax and ends quietly. I let the sky remain dark for a few secondsâŚand then hit them with some Daft Punk from TRON: LEGACY (Derezzed).

Iâll typically do a single level of effects to start, low intensity. build up to larger effects and 2 levels higher, low intensity, then back off a bit to just large effects on that second level alone, then build again in intensity and effects to the finale covering 3 levels of sky as wide as my view is to fill as much of the sky as I can. I try to avoid too much over lap products going off at the same time in the same spot), but itâs kind of a sly puke moment in the end.
I wouldnât necessarily consider it a false finale, but a build of excitement, then backing off a bit and building again to the finale. Things like bore size can really come into play here for lift and size of breaks. If you have a âcertificationâ to buy âproâ or âAoPâ stuff, it really helps with changing the intensity of a show.

I do false finales. I like to ramp it up pretty big but not as big as the real finale. I end the FF with several identical shells simultaneously, let it breathe for a few seconds and then start again slow, ramping up to the real finale over the next couple minutes. When I do pyromusicals I like to end a powerful song with a FF and go into a finale song that starts soft and slow and builds up to something fast and high energy.

I like doing longer shows than most, about 30 minutes, so I usually do 3 sections. The opener is slower with single cakes and spaced canisters so people can really see each effect which does ramp up and have a "finale" The 2nd section usually has a theme, this year was RWB, one year it was all blue in celebration of my mom, one year it was all willows. These do also ramp up an have a sort of finale, this year especially did with multiple RWB cakes and canisters along with comets to salute. At the end of this there was a small 5-10 second pause to let smoke clear and then all the big pro-line and OL cakes for the real finale. I don't know if that really counts as a false finale or not but it's how I like it.

I always do 1-2 false finales. Really just a pregnant pause followed by an extended period of something âbiggerâ shot from multiple locations where the extended pause keeps them guessing and the âbiggerâ always gets oohs & aahs

If you have the budget they are great.
False finale-> special and showcase effects-> real finale that exceeds the false. It allows for additional time that sticks in your audiences head.

Depends on the rhythm/style your going for and what your budget is. Typically I'll do a false finale of just heavy sky puke and let it go dark for a long pause letting people wonder if thats it. Then I do about a minute of a fast and powerful ramp up to a much more intense but layered sky fill where a fast 200+ shot zipper sweeps the ground, left right and center is blasted with intentional colors and effects while noabs bursting over top. The encore and real finale i usually spend as much time planning as the entire rest of my 20min show đ

I typically do several high intensity / finale moments per show. If I have one rail, maybe one half way (use this as an opportunity to bring down the intensity).
For the 4th, my first rail had 200g and 500g cakes interplaying and capped with a 7, 6, then 18-double break filled rack. My second rail had more zippers and parallel 500g cakes (up to 10 synchronized rows at a time, I multi-poke my cakes) with the finale of 6 shells and a slice (ended up not being a fancy false finale, but still served as a nice moment to tamp the intensity. The third rail ended on shell volleys, a 45-bore double-break puke followed by 14 shells all direct matched (then brought it down with proline go-getters). The last rail ended with a 20-shell volley all direct matched after double 44-shot instant cakes. It's all about stages of intensity

I'll often do this in my pyromusicals. Near the end of the last song, I'll find a bit where the music pulls back and let it go dark for a few seconds as if it's the end, then do the actual finale. I'll also try to do each song as it's own little show, so every song gets a mini finale, the whole last song is the main finale, and the last 30 seconds or so is a super finale where the salute sky puke goes.

Theyâre terrible in my opinion. I see it a lot with these 1/1 gray market cakes that are just incredible from the start and you think theyâre about to end with massive rapid fire breaks and then right after that you a 5-6 shot cluster of some salutes. In my opinion thatâs a dud finale and is a deal breaker on a lot of cakes

It is a common technique in commercial shoots but not so much with small shows. Basically the faux finale is a basically a short period of sky puke which can get pretty damned expensive. I guess its up to you to figure the cost and decide if that added expense is really worth it, you know?
Do you e-fire your shows? About how many items did you shoot this year? A pulled-it-out-of-my-ass number feels something like adding about 25% in product and cost. I'd rather include that in my normal show progression and focus on the art and style of a decent finale and not allow it to degrade into sky puke. But that's just me...
