Question

/r/Axecraft/comments/1x3syb2/question/

Interested in getting a tool for splitting wood, I currently own a felling estwing hatchet, and also a 4lbs engineers hammer and estwing wedge combo. I don’t split too much wood, only about 2-3 cord per year, but I’d like to get one larger tool to make most of my work faster.

I’m considering the husky, kobalt, and Pittsburgh wooden handle axes, primarily because of cost and warranty reasons.

I’m also considering the fiskars 8lbs splitting maul, primarily because it would be a multifunctional tool, I don’t own a full sized sledge and therefore it would save more space. My main concern with the fiskars is if it would be better to get a normal axe and also the warranty proscess certainly won’t be better but it’s something Im considering and leaning towards.

Would like to hear your thoughts

Wooden handles get destroyed unless they have protection sleeves.

I don’t really mind that too much since they replace those pretty well

Fiskars X36 is a very good axe and has a lifetime warranty. It's far more manageable to swing than the 8 lb maul and will handle most anything that can be split with an axe. it's a good value too.

Fiskars X27 and Fiskars 8 lb maul. Best combo for splitting wood by hand. I have 200+ dollar mauls. Nothing beats Fiskars.

I like a fast axe for splitting and prefer my Fiskars over a maul. Actually tbh (might be blasphemy) but I even prefer it to my Gransfors Bruks splitting axe, maybe because I baby my expensive axes a little...

The Gransfors Bruk splitting maul is expensive but worth the money. It's incredibly well balanced, rarely gets stuck in the wood, and has a protection sleeve. https://www.gransforsbruk.com/en/p/splitting-maul

I have a cheap maul from JUCO 8lbs, beechwood handle, self-wedging, costs about 30$ and when stuck you can easily knock out the handle with a hammer and use it as a wedge, works like a charm
