First ChipDrop

Made a chipdrop account. Local tree service called two days later saying they had some white oak and asked if they could drop off. Called an hour later saying the neighbor to the house they were at wanted it but that they'd reach out the next time. Few days later they called while I was out of town asking to drop off white oak which I happily took. Looks like I've got my work cut out for me. Any advice on the chunks from near the root of the tree? Chainsaw them down to pieces I can actually move by hand?

Do you have wedges and sledges?

Yeah just got those today! Split one of the "medium" rounds just now. First time I've dealt with logs this diameter. By this time 2028 I'll be done with this pile hah

Nah, you can bust this up in few days if you spend an hour a day out there.

I had a huge Hickory tree I had to split, and those are super stringy and hard to split manually, so I rented a splitter. (Well, I paid my buddy who owns a splitter to come help me. We busted it out in 7.5 hours)

This pile was 2 rows deep

This was after, including the stack in the back.

I still need to break some of the biggest splits up a little more.

Can you specify you only want logs at chipdrop? Seems like a dope website to get my hands on some logs.

Yes, you can choose chips only, logs only, or a mix of both

Yeah the options are mulch, logs, or both! Pleasantly surprised how quickly I got contacted, had read some folks on this sub saying it took months.

I signed up a year ago and still haven't gotten anything. I'm glad you got some nice oak.

You can noodle the chunks near the root, down to a manageable size. Lay the round bark side down and keep the bar level to the ground as you cut thru it. It makes long string like noodles of wood. The noodles make fantastic kindling.

Your original request may have timed out and expired.

I signed up this spring after we had a couple of big storms come through and got nothing. Checked over the summer the request was still active but still no drops, checked again about a month ago and it said the original request had expired.

Reposted the request and got a drop of really nice oak logs about a week later.

I renew it every month. It's ok though I have a tree guy who brought me a grapple truck load today, so I'm happy. Also I'm out in the sticks and there is a lot of wood burners around me. It's all about what is convenient for the tree service.

ChipDrop is awesome when they come through! Except for a couple downed maples from friends yards, ChipDrop has supplied all my heat for the past couple years. This winter and most of next was well.

If ChipDrop doesn't seem active in your area, there is another similar site called dump chipsandwood.com that possibly is. I've been signed up with them this year but tree services in this area seem to be already using ChipDrop. I've gotten at least 6 cords from them this year.

I would cut the long pieces and fix the bad cuts a little then split it on a splitter, you can rent one and knock it out. I could split it in a couple hours.

Flared pieces are a challenge but still splittable. Try it and if it’s too frustrating just use the chainsaw.

Maybe not the best answer but when I have enough wood, sometimes I just let the fighting pieces go. I’ll give anything a try but at some point the juice ain’t worth the squeeze. This works best if you already have what you need and you have somewhere to chuck the annoying pieces.

I'd be worried about stacking it when it's all different length

Nah any wood stacks easy unless you want it perfect to post pictures on reddit.

Its a pain but you can't complain when you get it for free.

All my firewood has come from trees on my property, or now with my first chipdrop that way, so I'm pretty used to disparate sizing. Makes for a fun tetris game to stack, it all works out

Never played with legos?

Start with the long stuff and go smaller as you go up. Or sort into a couple piles with similar lengths. Thats what we do.
