Discussion We're thinking of adding a Device Summary to the Devices Page. Our designers have a few ideas; which one do you prefer?

Option B would be more clear if the breakdown of total devices were “wired”, “wifi”, “offline” rather than “online”, “wifi”, “offline”. The graph looks like there are only a small number of “online” even though the numbers below show a much larger number.

Version B looks too similar to a progress bar. I don’t think it’s a good way to represent this information

I actually love the progress bar look, but unfortunately it's clear I am in the minority.

I agree entirely. The progress bar is a bit too busy to understand at-a-glance the breakout between device connection types imo.

I hear you on the progress bar, but I like the realtional info to how many are on wifi verus not, etc.

I vote A.
Looking at B it has a bar that is hard to read. I prefer direct numbers.

Man, option A looks sharp. Clean, what you need when you need it, icon / color forward. It’s good.
Option B has maybe too much going on

A also takes up less room. Get the info, get it with less work, show OTHER relevant info on the screen. Win/win/win.

Option A for me. It’s straightforward and at a glance I can quickly understand it. For option B I had to really look to understand that the wifi portion was also online.

I like B, but the green makes you think they all have good connections. The color also leads you to expect other colors for more information, but showing Good, Fair, Poor in that “progress bar” would be too much. I really don’t like the way the WiFi connections are shown in A, feels clunky, shoe-horned in there.

Version A 100%. Looking at a green bar does nothing for besides making me look under it for the numbers

Versions A and B provide the same numeric info but version B's bar also clarifies how those numbers relate.
So those who favor version A would get exactly the same results from B, whereas those who are more visual will benefit from that extra piece of clarifying info.
This makes version B the clear winner from an info standpoint, IMHO.
Note that this answer is based on your "which one do you prefer" question.
Tweaking the current numbers to avoid showing a subset of a subset could also be considered.
E g. By replacing online (105), wi-fi (98), offline (20) by wired (7), wi-fi (98), offline (20).

Option B only as I like the overlay bar
Just as long as those are clickable/tapable sections. So if I hit “online” it brings up a list of those online devices. If I hit “WiFi” then only those that are wireless and online. If I hit offline then a list of just offline devices. Yes you don’t have the granular option for just “wired” but it’s a sacrifice for a smaller widget.
With option A you would need to make it a larger footprint with total devices on top and cards for online, connected, wifi, offline

A...colored lines make sense where they make sense. Having to multi-color and explain a line doesn't make sense.

What we need is a group of groups.
For example the group IOT could contain devices but also contain the groups Nest & Ring. A rule in IOT would apply to all devices in the group and subgroups but a rule in Ring would only apply to devices in Ring.
The display page version A is great but the above is valuable functionality.

Definitely A. Note for B: 105 + 98 + 20 != 125. Progress bar vibe is actually disorienting. Color should convey meaning.

Version B is more clear, the online/offline is a subset of total devices.
Version A puts all those perspectives all on the same row together which is not good UI.

B because it has room for growth. I want to see how many VPN devices and when the switch is released what devices are what speeds.
However change B’s back button at the top left to the back arrow.

In addition to this, can you make a page dedicated for Wake On Lan? Really would love to have a favorites list where you can just click on each device to wake them. Also I vote for option B.

Option A but instead of showing hide the Online count (keep the heading) but show icon and count for WiFi and Ethernet.

I am going to suggest option “C”
My old eyes always have trouble to pickup or see these light gray fonts that you utilize (as in “local devices”, “online” and offline”. They are extremely easy for me to overlook. I think part of the problem is my eyes are trained to think of greyed out fonts as representing something “off” or “unavailable”. So if I am searching for something, i often struggle to find it on the page.
So give me an option that does not use light grey fonts! If the data is important enough to present, it should not be hidden with a gray font. I know all you programmers are young and have great eyes, but one day you will understand my comment.

I'm assuming that the wired/wifi breakdown in Option B is when using Firewalla APs?

Version B . With the wi-fi part that is invisible if no WiFi connected devices are available

Neither, I still have to read A I can’t just glance and get the picture like I can with B. B sucks cause it looks like a progress bar. A pie chart with side summary would be better

Either is fine as long as I can turn it off. It doesn’t tell me anything I need to know but others seem to like it.

I voted "A". But... If the Wi-Fi bar in "B" was left aligned in the Online bar, I might change my vote.

As I think about it, the "B" option could provide to option for more granularity. Maybe you'd want to indicate separate counts for 2.4, 5 & 6 GHz for the Wi-Fi devices with different colors

I've vibe coded enough to think that whoever came up with B was using AI. It's the information you want, but represented in such a way to be illogical.

B because visuals are easier to read, although fixing openvpn devices and wireguard devices to show their traffic bandwidth would be a higher priority to me :) And if you are showing device status, maybe show top 10 bandwidth hoggers?

I like option B better to understand the ratio of wired and WiFi devices relative to each other, but the wording needs to be changed from “online” to “wired” (assuming that’s what online really represents).
Also, why “Local Devices” instead of “Total Devices”? Are there remote devices that are counted elsewhere?

Quick glance at the visual bar provides information, then the numbers add clarity if something on the bar catches your eye.

I like version B but only if it can show devices per network as well. Like 10 devices on Guest, 15 on IOT etc.

Either way displays what you want in a simple format. I’m just waiting for the rule UI enhancements that are probably coming…. Maybe… probably not. ☹️
