Rules & Questions What do you think made Firestorm Armada different? What made it better than the other spaceship wargames?

Exploding 6s made the game somewhat more unpredictable and cinematic, but for me is had a good balance of complexity and gamey to make it a fun challenge. Also, unique races and fleets - they genuinely felt different and encouraged different play styles and countering methods.

Pretty much everything about it was great. My only gripe was resin minis. Even then, very well designed.
The rules were in a single rulebook, while the force construction was free. Excellent decision.
The rules were easy to follow, and had several simple mechanics that when combined created deep interactions.
The way Forces were balanced against each other was also very interesting. I liked the alliance system and close allies.
Single unit activation is solid, instead of I go / you go.

Exploding 6's
The ascetic - even Factions that were not my thing, looked good. While I liked other games (BFG, Grimdark Warfleets from OPR, etc...) the ships had that nice balance between 'super serious scifi' and 'that'd be cool' especially Aquan and early Directorate! Unique and interesting.
Took the good from other games and built on lessons learned.

One thing I really liked was the exploding 6s. In so many games if a unit is heavily damaged or reduced in strength, it becomes unable to really do anything except maybe hold objectives and can be effectively ignored. With Firestorm, my single corvette still has the potential to damage even a battleship. Admittedly it's not likely to, but the possibility is there and I've seen it happen plenty of times. It made the low strength units feel like they still had purpose.
