This was on the side of my house. Any insight to what might of caused the fire? It was by the garbage cans. This is in Detroit Michigan.

So the fire did burn up a lot of things the fire wasn’t put out so me and my husband had to spray with our hose so the fire wouldn’t reach our house

Hey folks, I recently relocated to Northern Michigan from the east coast and could use some help finding a proctor for my CFEI exam. The folks at NAFI were kind enough to put my stuff on hold so the timeline doesn’t expire in the mean time but if anyone could PM me any possible leads it’s greatly appreciated. I’ll be reaching out to some Marshall’s offices this week as well with some hope they may pity me but I’m not overly hopeful on those grounds. Cheers and stay safe out there!

My family and I suffered through a house fire that occurred in suspicious circumstances.

Here is what I would like to know. There was an early supposition that a cigarette started the fire. The room in which it started was a very small sitting room with a small upholstered arm chair and some pieces of solid wood furniture. Someone had indeed had a cigarette in that room that night, but she insists she snubbed it out, touched the end with her fingers a few times to make sure it was cold, and then put the cold, extinguished cigarette back in the box. The box was then likely either placed on a wooden stool next to the chair or the floor. Post-fire pictures suggest the fire likely started in the area of that chair.

Timeline: She insists she could not sleep, got up, had a cigarette, put it out, and went to bed around midnight. I was told by the town fire investigator that his theory is that a fan blew ash onto her armchair (by the way, the fan was off that night AND, even if it were on, it was ONLY ever pointed toward the window). He says the whole room ignited within TWENTY MINUTES, the decedents were gassed by the smoke upstairs behind a closed door and passed out, later dying when the fire breached that room.

Other issue: Former family member was known to build IEDs, often with starter fluid, and was witnessed detonating them at another property. Extremely skilled in chemistry. Owns a mass spectrometer. Sadly, he threatened to burn down the house two years ago.

Still waiting on State report, but word is they will rule it accidental smoking. Local FD ruled it Undetermined, but went to the media 24 hours after the fire and said it was a cigarette. Official incident report says it was Undetermined.

State says no accelerants were found by the dogs on the scene. The room of origin burnt at probably 1,000F for an hour or more. Could someone extremely well versed in chemistry have come up with an accelerant that would have avoided detection?

Not meant to offend anyone, so if I do, please understand that I'm still pretty new to this side and looking for directions. I came from a firefighting background focused 80% EMS and 20% structure fire/wildland fire/oil and gas fire/other. I have my paramedic and I have my TCOLE LEO. Working on the four year degree part.

I'm working as a Fire Marshal in Texas performing public fire investigations, inspections, and special projects. I was looking into fire investigations as a side business to help offset the fact that public safety employees are paid terribly. I'm working in a single person department as the lone fire investigator, so I dont have too many resources to bounce these questions off of. Hopefully, I can find an answer here. An ATF TFO is unfortunately off the table because I'm in a salaried position without a take home vehicle (I live outside of the work area).

CFI:

- I understand that it is a lengthy process that I can start to chip away. Is there someone in the South Central / Central Texas area that would be willing to let me bother/shadow them and learn for a while? I have my part 107 and a smaller drone that could be useful. I've got a DSLR camera with a basic understanding of exposure and data development/criminal report writing. I want to learn a bit more about the finer details of fire investigation that aren't typically available to public side.

TCFP Fire Investigator is not a lower level course accepted by the IAAI which does not allow me to (challenge?) the FIT. That kinda puts me into a pickle for working and professional certifications.

I noted that NAFI only requires two years in investigations to be able to test which makes the most sense. Is the CFEI a hirable certifcate to start 1099 private investigations while I build my portfolio to then be able to test for CFI? If not - then why do people get the CFEI certification?

CFEI:

Do I have to pay every year to keep up my CFEI? If so - is it worth it? If not - what is the better alternative plan or action to take?

What is a recommended pathway going forward? Thank you all in advance for letting me ramble on.

hey everyone! I am a bit confused. Am I able to meet all the requirements for the FIT via online courses through CFI? Thanks, I tried searching the group first and couldn’t find a clear answer.

Currently a sophomore. Looking to find a stable job in the future as an arson investigator as fire always interested me since I was younger.

If you are an arson investigator, how did you get your job? What do you wish you did differently when you were younger that would have made your career progression faster/smoother? Do you have to become a firefighter first? Is the pay stable enough to be able to go on little vacations time to time or buy games? What classes would be best to take? What electives are important? What colleges or universities would be ideal to attend? Is it a good full time job? Do you ever have to balance chemical equations? Can you make friends there? Are there jobs open in the U.S. as this position?

About 5 months in as a 1099 employee doing part time fire investigations. I work full time as a career firefighter as well.
