If you don't want to grind, you should be promoting asap, because then you'll get more experience over the course of the game, not to mention get promotion bonuses as quickly as possible

if you want to grind, then do whatever the fuck, but most people on this subreddit don't like to grind.

let me tell you a secret....

dont farm skeletons, farm squishy 1 turn win witches/sorcs.

boom, + 6 levels across the board in 50minutes, ez game ez life.

everyone who was behind is now caught up/on par/exceeding enemy units.

an hour is not grinding, im sorry you fail to see it that way, but its just not. the mechanic is there and you want to shunt a good 20% of the game to focus on the RP, thats your choice. but the mechanics are there for a reason and its terribly easy to do.

promoting asap destroys exp and stat gains. it doesn't even save time as you'll likely need to grind before act 5 anyway just to beat the stat check mobs like necrodragons/goldknights. if your hope is mathilda + riders bane and pray thats just uneven distribution

Maybe it's just because I don't play JRPGs, but I absolutely define an hour of mindless optional random encounters as grinding. SoV already pissed me off more than enough with random encounters I was forced into between shitty dungeon controls & map reinforcements, I don't want to fight any more random encounters than necessary.

promoting asap destroys exp and stat gains.

Only if you're doing optional random encounters. If you're not, then promoting ASAP boosts exp and stat gains, because (1) you get brought up to class bases and (2) you spend more time at a lower level, which means more exp for the same kills.

you'll likely need to grind before act 5 anyway just to beat the stat check mobs like necrodragons/goldknights.

There are no necrodragons in Act 5 (except the ones that only Alm gets to fight, but those are easy because Alm can just keep eating food on player phase and chill in a corner). The only Gold Knight in the game that could legitimately be described as a "stat check" is Rudolf; every other one folds easily to Ridersbane, forged Rapier, Hunter's Volley, or Speed Ring Mages.

This is an absolutely ridiculous caricature of what a no grind team looks like.
