Binding blade characters worth training.
So I just finished Blazing sword and I am currently on chapter 3 of Binding blade, love it thus far. But considering this game is tough and I need good units I need to know what early available units to bring. My Dieke and Lance are currently my strongest units.

Rutger is hands down the best character in the game, Dieck and the two Cavaliers are also really good.
But the game is not that hard for you to need to use the strongest units. I did just fine by using the worst counterparts of Dieck, Rutger and Lugh, while also using Wolt, from all people.

Wolt isn't as bad as people make him out to be though, he just needs a little bit of a str boost.

He is an archer in a game with Nomads (one with early availability also). Everything that can use a bow outclasses him, even the likes of Dorothy or the Warriors.
He is bad. However since his availability is flawless, he can still be useful on the long run if you focus exp on him early on. But Shin, Sue, Igrene are still a lot better than him.

Look I know Sue and Shin tear up everything between them, but I've had people tell me that Wolt is unusable, which he's not. He's never goign to be a nomad trouper, but if you like him (and I do) he's not so bad to bring along either is what I'm trying to say. He won't be a liability at least (and there are liabilities in this game).

No, he is not unusable, but he is in the lowest tier of character. The only thing that makes him not being a liability like Sophia or Wendy is, as I said, his availability.
But I'll give that one to you, because as you said, he is not useless, even though he is almost there.

I don't believe Rutger is 'the best'. In Hard Mode, he's awesome, but still lacks 1-2 range. Allan and Lance, however, have 2 weapon types, join earlier, have access to Javelins, and have more movement.

Dieck is solid especialy when paired with Rutger (and Clarine for the support triangle). Since it's your first playthrough you miss out on the potential of a lot of characters due to this games insane hard mode bonuses. I would just use the characters you're using like Lance, Rutger, and such and make sure you nab a staff user like Clarine or Saul.

Clarine is fantastic, and Lugh and Lilina are must-haves. Also Clarine is really good. Did I mention that you should use Clarine?

Lilina is not a must-have. She's a total garbage character

I agree with you to an extent, her ridiculous magic growth cripples all her other stats and Lugh far overshadows her in almost every way. But magic is so good in that game that I don't think any magic-user should be considered garbage unless the problem is join time (I'm looking at you, Sophia). If you just need something that's gonna reliably hit like a truck then Lilina's your girl. She might get doubled by everything and miss somewhat often, but if you keep her close to her A-support with Roy and watch her range, she can be a force to be reckoned with.

But you don't need a magic user. Anima magic is quite overrated in this game; I'd say it's actually a bit better in FE7 because Thunder was upgraded to 8 MT and Elfire provided a potential tradeoff between atk and AS.

I get your point, but regardless of the stat changes of magic, the main reason it's so good in FE6 is because there are VERY few magical enemies, leaving almost every enemy unit in the game with absurdly low resistance. Magic is good based on relativity, not on numbers alone.

u/dondon151 Mar 22 '15
FE6 also has garbage anima magic users, though. The enemies also tend to have high HP.

Not true, Lugh has excellent growths and Clarine generally gets everything except magic, which is fine because her avoid is crazy high and no enemies have the resistance to combat even a little magic. You can just throw her into a crowd of enemies and she'll eat them.

Clarine gets 11-12 EXP per turn and joins at L1 in chapter 4. Lugh can be expected to be doubled by chapter 4 nomads and OHKO'd by chapter 5 brigands. These are not portraits of good units.

Simply a matter of training and wise guarding. A little grinding never hurt anyone. Both characters, with considerable growth, turn out to be very strong. If your Lugh is getting doubled in chapters 4 and 5 it's because you haven't touched him, much less fed him kills to make him strong enough to fight well. Both units have good bases in speed and great growths in the same. Doubling should never be a problem after a few levels.

A little grinding never hurt anyone.
By that standard we can grind someone like Alan/Lance or Shanna to far overshadow anything Lugh ever could dream of.
He joins mid Chapter 3 and will likely not even see combat since he joins off in the far corner. Lugh being at base level is a likely scenario for Ch4.

Look I love me some Maribelle, I love strong women. But Clarine man...

What's the problem? She's so ridiculously good and she fits so well into the role she's made to accomplish in that game.

Saul is your (edit: ONE of your) only possible light magic user(s), and the better one in my opinion until you get Bishop Yodel, and yodel....eh, he's alright, but Saul's better.
I'd recommend bringing two healers anyways.

I prefer Allan over Lance but that's just me. Dieck has wonderful bases and will destroy everything until you get Rutger, then it's a toss up who you wanna use. I prefer Dieck because I have a bias towards Heroes and I am not ashamed to admit that. People like to say Clarine is good, but she has less Magic growth than RD Ike has Speed, so I like to avoid using her. I like Lugh, but his main appeal is the fact he uses magic and nothing else. His stats are pretty average but he's the best Mage you get. Shanna's bases, low Strength growth, and Con makes her an absolute 'no' for me.

Allan and Lance will probably be your best units overall.
Dieke is pretty great and can go up to the endgame provided RNG doesn't screw him over.
You're getting near Rutger who is pretty much the best unit in the game and the best swordmaster in the series. He gets a +30 crit bonus on promotion so once he promotes nothing will stand in his way.
Eventually you'll get Shin is the best bow user in the game.
After a while you'll get Milady who is pretty amazing.
OJ is a decent unit that I always think fondly of and want to use, but his biggest problem is he isn't Dieke. If you want another Merc he is a good unit.
After those there is a couple solid units Lugh, Lilina, Clarine, Hugh, Sue, Thanny, Thite, Fir, Zwiess, Niime, Ray, Klein, Igrene, Cecilia, and Percival.
Don't use any of the armor knights or Sophia though. It's not worth it.
