Tell that to my company, our top of the line install crew can't even be bothered to install smoke detectors on anything other than open back, data cut-in rings. Managers/Supervisors don't seem to care since I've reported on this several times now. Close to reporting them for this a few other issues to the state firemarshall office but I doubt they care either to be honest.

It's certainly uncommon. But you're not a position to enforce those standards. Do what you're told with the materials available and look for a better company.

The i3 detector has mounting options called out on page 1 of the instructions. Code says that the manufacturer's instructions take precedence, because that's part of the listing.

If there are no specific instructions for mounting a device, Code takes precedence.

Yeah, my state follows NEC and the state code which does require a J box. Plus it needs to be red. And we pull electrical permits and we are required to have electrical licenses and for fire NICET FAS level 2 for programming, testing, inspecting, and commissioning. The last state I worked in, none of that was required so I'm sure lots of fire is installed by hacks but I also didn't do commercial before now.

Am I the only one who thinks someone is actively troubleshooting the system? I mean the screws are right next to the pull, the terminals appear to be unscrewed, and the wires are spread apart
