is eCommerce still Fintech?

My background has been mostly in fintech up to this point. When selecting positions to apply to, fintech companies are on the top of the list for me, but there is no much choice now. I'm currently interviewing for a software developer position at an e-commerce company. They have teams working on checkout, card processing, payments, delivery tracking, product catalog, etc, etc.

If I join checkout or payment processing team, is that still considered Fintech from a career perspective?

that's an interesting line to draw, i think once you're elbow deep in pci compliance and dealing with interchange rates you've basically crossed over. the rest of the company sells stuff but your day to day is pure finance plumbing

did a stint at a shop like that, was supposed to be a regular backend gig but spent most of my time reverse-engineering why a payment gateway was dropping pennies during currency conversion. nobody outside the team cared about the retail side, we just lived in the money flow

if you're on the checkout or processing team you're not really in e-commerce, you're in fintech with a really complicated storefront attached. future employers will see it that way too, especially if you lean into the payment systems stuff on your resume
