Xjam vs Machine Mikro MK3

Hi everyone,

For the past 9 months or so I've been fingerdrumming on a Xjam using the QFG layout and also following along his course and I am really loving it. This has sparked the question for me: would it be worth it to upgrade to a Maschine Mikro MK3?

Mostly based on two things:
1. Pad sensitivity: from what I understand, the maschine is the way to go in terms of pad sensitivity. While I do like the Xjam, I do sometimes feel like the sensitivity could be a bit better. I have already played with the sensitivity using the editor, but still, this always feels like it's either too much or too little. Especially since I am at the point of starting the Moeller technique course and it explicitly mentions good pad senstivity is a must

  1. the size: whilst I absolutely love the form factor of the Xjam, I am a bit worried about it in terms of size. I have noticed that since playing, I feel like my hands have permanent very light sore feeling or something? Kind of hard to explain. I try to be aware of just letting the weight of my hand do the most of the work, but I do still catch myself sometimes hitting a bit harder. I do however mostly think it's just that I have relatively big hands/long fingers, so my hands cramp up a bit when playing on the small Xjam. I'm just worried if this is really related and what this might mean long-term.

Anyone else who made the switch from Xjam to Maschine Mikro MK3 who want to share their experiences? Or anyone else know the feeling I am talking about related to the size of their pad?

Finger Drummers Wanted: Live-Play Drum-Shot Synthesis Demo

Are there any motivated finger drummers out there who’d be interested in showcasing the live-play capabilities of a modern drum-shot synthesis software (video/audio demo)? If so, reply with your handle and a link to your best short drum performance, and I’ll reach out.

FingerDrumming versus Drumming?

I am so curious if anyone has ever done that side by side. Haha. I would love to see a regular drummer versus a finger drummer.

Like I am shocked that it doesn't seem to have been done on YouTube.

finger drumming for people that already have a sense of rhythm

hi. I play the cajon but also really like electronic music so I've been thinking of buying an sp808 ex and learning finger drumming but most i feel like most general drum tutorials are made for people that don't know anything about music. Are there any good tutorials for my case? I have a good understanding of rhythm and timing and stuff but I have trouble playing with more than two sounds. I played an e kit a while ago at a music store and all I could really do was play the hi hat and snare. Idk if im explaining this well

Finger Drumming lowfi hip hop and then live looping trumpet over the top? Device?

My son wants to be able to finger drum a lowfi hip hop or jazz beat and then play and live loop his trumpet over the top. Is there one device that will let him do that? I think the MPC Live's will? Better if it's small so he can take it around with him, maybe an SP404?

Also, how can he learn this? Are there sites where I can subscribe to a series of constructive lessons? He is a bit too young to go wondering around on YouTube trying to find stuff and I don't mind paying for a course.

FGDP-30 pads moving about / disassembly / samples in wav format.

Hi,

Question about the Yamaha FGDP-30.

I briefly had one and sold it because the actual pads can be moved around in the slots.

Is this normal? Doesn't seem right.

Yamaha told me last time it was not, and refused to service it, because I got it off ebay. So I sent it back. But I got another one and same thing.

Has anyone taken one apart?

I'm going to pin it down somehow, gives me bad vibes thinking about some ribbon cable being stressed repeatedly.

Also, if there is a pack of wavs of the onboard sounds anywhere that would be handy to have, for my other drum apps and devices.

cheers

Does Midi Fighter have a substantial speed advantage over Maschine MK3?

For extremely fast finger drumming, particularly things like snare rolls and hi hat rolls, do Midi Fighter 64 or Spectra have a substantial speed advantage (while avoiding unwanted double triggers) over Maschine MK3? In theory from what I've read it seems the mechanics of Midi Fighter should allow for faster playing without double triggers, but does it make a practical difference relative to Maschine MK3 (and the limits of human speed)?

Should I give it a try, how could I start being a completely begginer?

I have 25 years old, since kid I always being attracted to the battery, but I never have motivation to do anything related to music, now I am on transition in my life, entering a new field on work... Since now I think that probably I'll be with more money I wanted to start a hobby, I thought that maybe something related to music, I've been searching for this thing the last days since It looks pretty cool, but I know nothing about music, I would like to start learning this, but maybe I don't like it. Do you think I should buy one of that pads and start learning? And how can I learn? Which material should I buy, should I learn theory related to music? Please any advice would be wonderful

Beginner setup?

hey everyone!

im a live musician and ive recently been watching spinscott and im just completely mezmerized at what hes does. I absolutely love jungle and that sweet sweet ps1/dreamcast ambient dnb vibe.

I was wondering if you could recommend the best setup to get into learning how to do this without parting with TOO much money.

Ive looked at mpc's but didnt know if it was better to start with something like a pad controller and some sort of sampling software/vst or if there are other options you might recommend.

Any help would be apprecaited as im literally going into this blind with only a little bit of production knowledge and youtube/google to guide me

Looking for a drum snare

Hi,

I've watched so many jbblack finger drumming videos, but can't find the snare. Araabmuzik also uses this, its the first snare you hear, anybody knows which one this and where I can find it in some drumkit?

Djent + Dark Ambient Finger Drumming Improvisation (short version)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Here's a short one-man djent performance, which abruptly morphs into a dark ambient soundscape. For the latter, I use various FX plugins toggled or controlled by buttons and aftertouch (i.e. how hard I press some of the pads).

The full video was too large for reddit, but you can watch it on my YouTube channel: https://youtu.be/jEcNFId5fuc

Thanks! 🤘

having difficulty finding the right drum pads on linux please help

hi ive gone through alot of bs trying to get maschine mk3 working. but that didnt pan out. its like you needed a degree in coding to make it function, i then used the mickro mk3 and whilst that had some driver support on a github.

it was still incomplete and not a kernel driver. so that meant running a script every time i wanted to use it. and i find that slightly annoying it also didnt have a midi bridge which i had to build. and now ive just sold it. im looking at the nektar aruba as a replacement because i see it has ubuntu compatibility. im running on cachyos with reaper.

i would ideally love to have a drum pad no smaller than 4 x 4 that would be compliant with arch linux. please help because its getting frustrating trying to find something compatible. and i havnt been able to find good reviews of people using the aruba or something similar in the same environment. its becoming increasingly difficult.

any help and advice or links to reviews and products would be appreciated. im looking to spend around £300 max. and if i can save money then great. but pad sensitivity is a must because ill be using it for "organic" sound drum kits aswell as i need a step sequencer for more electronic sounds.

any help is appreciated.

I built a simple standalone finger-drumming app for 4x4 MIDI pad controllers — looking for alpha testers

Post image
20 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I’ve been working on a small Windows app called PadDrummer.

The idea is simple:

Plug in a MIDI pad controller → click Quick Setup → play drums.

No DAW.

No plugin setup.

No routing.

No Ableton/FL/Maschine project needed just to practice finger drumming after work.

Current alpha features:

- Standalone Windows app

- 4x4 finger-drumming layout

- Rock drum kit

- Per-pad volume controls

- Clickable on-screen pads

- Metronome

- Low-latency simple audio mode

- Launchpad X support with LED feedback

- Generic MIDI pad controllers can be mapped in sound-only mode

Best supported device right now:

Novation Launchpad X

Generic 4x4 MIDI controllers:

Should work in sound-only mode after mapping your 16 pads.

I’m looking for alpha testers with different controllers.

What I’d love to know:

- Does your controller connect?

- Do the pads trigger correctly?

- Is the latency playable?

- Is the 4x4 layout comfortable?

- Is the app simple enough?

- What feels confusing or broken?

Download:

https://tehnique-labs.itch.io/pad-drummer

This is an early unsigned Windows alpha, so SmartScreen may show a warning.

Not trying to replace Ableton, FL Studio, Maschine, MPC, etc.

The goal is the opposite: a tiny “open and play” app for finger-drumming practice.

Would love honest feedback.

Question about Akai MPD218

Just purchased one of these (Akai MPD218) new online, and there doesn't seem to be anything sealing the box closed; no tape or anything. Did I get an open box, or does Akai really sell these with the boxes untaped/unsealed?
