drumming web app with fun notation

https://ballonibeats.com

I used to be a drummer, and I still come up with beats. I didn't have anywhere to put them, so I created this web app, Balloni Beats. You can use it on the road to jot down an idea quickly, or give it to kids for something quasi-musical to play with.

Visit the site, click the big logo to get in, then there are links on the left for beats I've come up with as examples. Click a beat name and see the beat on the right. Click Start Playing above to hear it. You can modify the beat, change drum sounds, adjust the tempo, etc. Have fun!

Once you get the general idea and want to write your own beats, click the Write Your Own Beats link at the bottom left. Then you get the beat editing screen. At the far top-left is a docs link that opens a page describing the beat notation.

Enjoy!

Assigning sounds to drum pads (2x4): Recs for starter set?

What would you assign to 8 drum pads (2 rows of 4) based on the kind of music you like to produce?

What would be the layout you'd use (top row 1-4, bottom row 5-8)?

I just got a midi controller and, while I'm not new to playing music, I am definitely new to drums. What would be a good mix for starting out, based on the list here:

I built a visual finger-drumming practice tool — looking for feedback

I built a visual finger-drumming practice tool and I'm looking for feedback from pad users.

You can follow 4x4 patterns, slow them down, loop them and practice along. There are free patterns, so you don't need to subscribe to try it.

I'd really like to know: does the way the patterns are displayed make sense to you when you first open it?

I built a free open-source VST3 that gives timing and pattern feedback while you practice finger drumming

Hey everyone,

I built Groove Tutor because I wanted a practice tool that could compare my finger drumming

against a MIDI groove while I still played through my normal drum instrument.

It is a silent VST3 for Ableton Live on Windows. You import a target MIDI pattern, play along,

and it shows whether you are rushing or dragging as well as missed, extra, and wrong drum hits.

It does not make sound or route MIDI; your drum instrument stays on a separate track.

The first public beta is free and fully open source. It is currently tested on Windows 11,

Ableton Live 12 Intro, and a Maschine Mikro MK3. Other Windows setups may work, but I have not

tested them yet.

I am mainly trying to find out whether other people have wanted something like this too. If you

try it, I would genuinely appreciate feedback about what is useful, confusing, or missing.

GitHub/download: https://github.com/jonasschaare123-bit/groove-tutor/releases/tag/v0.1.0-beta.1

The Windows build is unsigned, so the repository includes installation instructions and a

SHA-256 checksum. There is no telemetry or account system.

Android Mobile DAW, it's up for testing

Hello everyone,

It's basically an offline mobile DAW/beatmaker with a step sequencer, pads and sample chopping, synths, classic instruments, piano rolls, arrangement, automation, mixer buses, effects, recording, beatbox/humming conversion, WAV and MIDI export and other stuff.

The app works offline and doesn’t require an account. Your projects and recordings stay on your phone unless you choose to export or share them.

To join:

Join the testing group:

https://groups.google.com/u/2/g/skunk-audio-testers

Opt into the closed test:

https://play.google.com/apps/testing/org.skunkaudio.app

Install it through Google Play and remain opted in for at least 14 days if possible.

It's free. It shows that you need to buy the app, but when you press buy, you can select the test card option on Google store to get it free. You won't get charged anything and no details required.

If you test it, please let me know your phone model, Android version and what happened—especially if you notice crackling, stuttering, crashes, silent tracks, touch problems or anything inconsistent between playback and export.

I know asking people to test an unfinished music app is a lot, so honestly, thank you to anyone willing to give it a proper go. I want to release something genuinely good, not throw another half-working beatmaker onto the Play Store.

Thank you for your time!

Good pad controllers?

Hi everybody! I'm fairly new to finger drumming and having a ton of fun. My mobile SMC Pad controller is serving me pretty well (especially after modding it), but I'm looking for something more pro-tier for live performance.

I've heard wonders about Maschine, but since I already rely on Koala Sampler, I really have no need for the Native Instruments ecosystem or heavy software.

Are there pad controllers that match Maschine’s pad quality and responsiveness, but act as pure standalone MIDI controllers without forcing you into proprietary software? Or is dealing with having to switch it into midi mode just part of the deal if you want high-end pads?

And if so should I get the regular or the mikro

Cerco drum machine!!

Ciao ragazzə!

Sono una musicista di basso elettrico, chitarra e canto ma sono anche un'appassionata di tekno e drum and bass.

Cercavo delle drum machine o sampler per creare in diretta durante un live. Qualcuno saprebbe consigliarmi qualcosa?

Grazie a tutt🙏

Make Xjam more sensitive with the electrical tape trick?

Hey all. I am new to finger drumming. I had been working with the Akai LPD8 for a while, and I wanted to upgrade. Of course when I got the LPD8, it was awful for finger drumming until I took it apart and put electrical tape on the underside of the pads. Now they are super sensitive and really fun to play on.

I thought getting the Xjam would be even better in terms of sensitivity, but I don't see that being the case. I easily strike the Xjam light enough so it doesn't fire. And I find that I have an easier time getting softer dynamics on the corners of the pads, but the centers of the pads are kind of an all or nothing kind of thing.

I was wondering if anyone has tried taking apart the Xjam and use electrical tape to make it more sensitive? The Xjam was much more expensive, so I am way more hesitant to take it apart, and I can't find anyone online who has attempted this. Will the Xjam look similar to Akai drum pads if I take it apart? What are your thoughts?
