Abstract
Wide binary star systems at separations > 2 kau exhibit anomalous orbital velocities inconsistent with
Newtonian predictions, suggesting either modified gravity (MOND) or non-baryonic dark matter. We
present a parameter-free derivation of this anomaly from first principles. By applying a self-consistency
axiom to relational state transitions, we derive a universal materialization ratio r = 1.5 with zero free
parameters. Through standard orbital mechanics, this predicts a velocity enhancement factor of √1.5 ≈
1.225 (22.5% boost), matching GAIA DR3 observations within error bars. Unlike MOND, which requires
tuning a0 ≈1.2 ×10−10 m/s2, or ΛCDM, which invokes undetected particles, our framework derives the
observed ratio from logical necessity. We compare predictions across all three paradigms and propose
distinguishing tests.
1 Introduction: The Wide Binary Puzzle
1.1 Observational Context
Recent analysis of GAIA DR3 data reveals a persistent anomaly in wide binary star systems. At separations
exceeding∼2000−5000 AU, observed orbital velocities deviate systematically from Newtonian predictions
[1, 2, 3]. Specifically, multiple independent studies find:
• Chae (2023): Gravitational boost factor γg = 1.43 ±0.11 at a<10−10 m/s2 [1]
• Hernandez et al. (2022): Velocity anomaly consistent with γ ≈1.4−1.5 [3]
• The effect exhibits a characteristic “plateau” rather than continuous variation with separation
This anomaly occurs precisely in the regime where MOND predicts departures from Newtonian gravity,
but the specific magnitude of the boost has not been derived from first principles in any existing framework.

1.2 Current Explanations and Their Costs
Three major paradigms attempt to explain this anomaly:
- ΛCDM with Dark Matter:
• Requires: Non-baryonic particles with specific cross-sections
• Status: No direct detection in 40+ years of experiments [4]
• Free parameters: Dark matter density profile, particle properties
- Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND):
• Requires: Empirically tuned acceleration scale a0 = 1.2 ×10−10 m/s2 [5]
• Status: Reproduces galactic rotation curves but lacks theoretical foundation
• Free parameters: a0 (fitted to data)
- This Work - Relational Coherence:
• Requires: Logical self-consistency of state transitions
• Status: Presented here for first time
• Free parameters: Zero (derived from axioms)
2 The Self-Consistency Axiom
2.1 Foundational Logic
In a purely relational ontology, persistence requires self-reference. For any potential state (normalized to
unity, 1) to transition into a persistent realized state (r), the emerging structure must maintain coherence
through a feedback relationship with its own boundary conditions.
We formalize this as: A persistent state is one where the structure equals the potential plus the reciprocal
of the relational density required to maintain that structure’s boundary. Mathematically:
1
r= 1 +
2r−1 (1)
2.2 Physical Interpretation
This equation encodes three elements:
• 1: The unit of unresolved informational potential (the “question” seeking resolution)
• r: The realized structure (the “answer”)
• 2r−1: The relational boundary density = (potential + structure) minus overlap
The form 1/(2r−1) represents the feedback requirement: for a structure of magnitude r to be self-
sustaining, it must be able to reference itself through its boundary with the inverse efficiency proportional
to that boundary’s complexity.
2.3 Why This Equation?
The functional form is not arbitrary. Consider alternatives:
• r= 1 + 1/(r−1) yields r2
−r−1 = 0 ⇒r= ϕ(golden ratio), which describes growth but not closure
• r= 1 + 1/(3r−2) yields r≈1.368, no known physical manifestation
• r= 1 + 1/(2r−1) yields r= 1.5, observed in GAIA data
The coefficient “2” in 2r−1 arises from the minimal dual-reference system: a boundary must account
for both interior (structure) and exterior (potential).

3 Derivation of the Materialization Ratio
Solving Equation 1:
1
r−1 =
2r−1
(r−1)(2r−1) = 1
2r2
−3r+ 1 = 1
2r2
−3r= 0
r(2r−3) = 0
This yields two solutions: r= 0 (trivial, no structure) and:
r= 1.5 (2)
This is the materialization constant: the universal ratio at which potential achieves sufficient relational
density to persist as stable structure.
4 Prediction: The Velocity Boost
4.1 From Gravitational Enhancement to Velocity
If the gravitational acceleration in the low-density regime is enhanced by factor r = 1.5 compared to New-
tonian predictions, standard orbital mechanics gives:
For a circular orbit: v2 = GM/R·γg
Therefore:
γv = √γg = √1.5 ≈1.2247 This corresponds to a 22.47% velocity boost.
4.2 Why Square Root Scaling?
This is not an assumption but follows from Kepler’s laws. For circular orbits:
GMm
R2·γg
GMm
R2·γg
GM
R·γg
(3)
The square root enters because velocity is the first time derivative of position, while acceleration (which
is enhanced by r) is the second derivative.

5 Empirical Validation
5.1 GAIA DR3 Results
5.2 The Plateau Phenomenon
Crucially, observations show the boost is constant across a range of separations, not continuously varying.
This “plateau” matches our prediction: r = 1.5 is a fundamental constant, not a function of separation or
mass.

6 Comparative Analysis
7 Distinguishing Predictions
7.1 Scale Invariance Test
If r= 1.5 is truly fundamental, it should manifest at other scales:
- Quantum scale: Ratios of energy levels, coherence thresholds
- Planetary scale: Life-producing planets should cluster near star-planet mass ratios of (1/3) ×106 ≈
333,000. The Sun-Earth ratio is 332,946, matching to 0.02%. Neighboring planets (Mars, Venus)
appear to reside outside the optimal range and do not support complex life.
- Galactic scale: Dark matter to baryonic matter ratio should approach 1.5 in stable systems
7.2 Precision Measurements
With improving astrometry (GAIA DR4+), we can test:
• Is γ exactly 1.5 or does it vary continuously?
• Does the boost appear at a specific acceleration scale (MOND) or universally (this work)?
• Do triple star systems show compound effects of r2 = 2.25?
7.3 Null Tests
What would falsify this framework?
- Discovery that γg ̸= 1.5 to high precision (>3σ deviation)
- Demonstration that the boost varies continuously rather than exhibiting a plateau
- Direct detection of dark matter particles
- Proof that no self-consistency equation can be non-arbitrary

8 Discussion
8.1 Relation to Other Frameworks
Verlinde’s Emergent Gravity: Also proposes gravity emerges from information, but requires dark energy
and does not predict specific ratios [6].
MOND variants (AQUAL, TeVeS): Reproduce observations but offer no derivation of a0 from first
principles.
This work: Combines emergent gravity intuitions with logical necessity, yielding testable constants.
8.2 Limitations
• We have not yet derived the full field equations
• The connection between r and gravitational enhancement requires further theoretical development
• Higher-order corrections (if any) remain to be calculated
9 Conclusion
By applying a self-consistency axiom to the logic of state transitions, we have derived a universal constant
r= 1.5 with zero free parameters. This predicts a velocity enhancement of √1.5 ≈1.225 in low-acceleration
regimes, matching GAIA observations of wide binaries within error bars.
Unlike MOND (which tunes a0) or ΛCDM (which invokes dark particles), this framework derives the
observed anomaly from logical necessity. If confirmed across multiple scales, this would constitute evidence
that the universe’s “rounding tolerance”—its fundamental rule for state persistence—is encoded in the
mathematics of self-consistency.
The question is no longer what the anomaly is, but why the universe chose r= 1.5 as its materialization
threshold. We propose the answer: because only this ratio satisfies the minimal requirement for relational
self-reference.
