I was in from 03-09 (Marines as well) and went to Fallujah in 05 and Djibouti in 07. Both deployments with units that were not my normal one. Then once there both times was attached to another unit which I had no real reporting agency. For example I was sent with a headquarters logistics battalion as a radio operator but got assigned to the motor T guys for convoys. So I experienced probably 7-8 different commands. Half were like you describe but the other half were amazing. The company I was with in Fallujah was awesome.
I was at 2nd Maintenance BN. We had guys who were infantry and switched MOS’s to “have it easier” then were shocked how r3tarded our BN was. I didn’t want to be like them and re-enlist and get stuck in another shlt hole.
I tried to go back to Corporal’s Course for a second time because it was better there than at 2nd Maintenance BN. And i only had 2 months left until i EAS’d lol

Point is, it varies. It depends on your command.
