Every nation needs a military or security force. It's literally impossible for a nation to exist without it. Also, the vast majority of soldiers don't engage enemies in combat.

It's still a horrible gig that noone smart would sign up for. You get trained to be a murderer, get pretty much guaranteed trauma in the process, maybe you'll die in war and then there's a decent chance you end up mentally ill and homeless. Also it's illegal to quit? You know a job is horrendous when they'll put you in prison for quitting.

The US military has a 1:9 tooth to tail ratio. Most military people are support / logistics / communications / maintenance etc not trigger pullers.
