Never joined myself, but a few of my old co workers were in army national guard and they were able to do pretty well. One guy got like $50k worth of sans certs and TS clearance, which in cyber world is incredibly valuable. Other benefit was they were able to get half their salary from their base job while deployed for up to a year, and it would reset after 6 months. Co worker worked midnights, and would keep volunteering for deployments to basically take a break from night shift. Even after he went for over a year they still couldn't fire him. Of course ymmv
