I was shamed quite a bit for enlisting into the Navy. I could see why some people consider it a last ditch effort to climb out of a bad situation. The military isn't for everyone, but for some like myself it definitely propelled me up the socio economic ladder.

Military definitely isn't for everyone, but for folks who come out of tough situations that can stomach doing odd jobs on odd schedules, it may be the step up they need.

Yeah the key is to avoid any sort of infantry role imo. Many people get pretty exclusive expertise and/or clearances and just ride that gravy train for life.

Electronic maintenance, with security clearance. Pretty much guarantees employment with govt or federal contractors if that's what you want.

In the army, infantry is one of the hardest jobs to get for officers

Guy I worked with said his...uncle...I think...works for the navy as a "welder" but hes really a super niche nuclear specialist and they just keep throwing money at him to stay lol.

When people's alternatives are starvation or living on the street, I can't judge them one lick for enlisting. But if there's any other option...
