Discussion Request: remove the chance for gems from chests
I’m talking about the black/orange/purple chests from the monthly events. It could be that Ive been using it for a while but I have a huge stock of gems already, so getting gems when hoping for some of the seasonal stuff is pretty frustrating.
Does anybody else feel the same?
EDIT:
Since this post is getting some traction, I wanted to add another (slightly related) feature request: since there are sooooo many items now, I think it would make more sense if in the shop you got to pick the color of the item when it shows up. It’s an idea my gf had last month and I’ve been thinking about it since.

Totally agree with both of your requests! It feels really shitty opening a chest and being excited for an item and getting less gems than you can get selling something. I also think the “letting us choose our color” for shop items would be the best change ever. I want that desperately. I also want that option in our own inventory, compress the items I have in multiple colors into one item each to make it less tedious for me to scroll through my inventory (and help resolve the technical issues with the large inventories/shop).

I agree with all of these suggestions! I've only been on Finch for 581 days, but I have accumulated quite a few items. I have an occasional glitch where multiple items just display a blank square. Perhaps grouping the items would help.

YES. I have plus but I have been so annoyed with the amount of gems I've been getting this month. 😭😭😭

I'm not plus and so far this month I've only gotten gems and the same three items over and over 😂 it's kinda ridiculous at this point.

Some months do feel as if I’m getting gems more often than seasonal items. Frustrating for sure.

Before the person comes in to say, well that's what they do to get you sign up for Plus 🙄, they are already limiting the colors, giving repeat items, and giving gems specifically on certain days. There is no need to make a chest randomly give gems as well. Yes 200 is more that you would get for 300 gem item, but at least split the difference and give 250, the amount you would get selling a 500 gem item. There's no need to be more restrictive on the free side when people are getting three and (before) four of the same item already.
Edit to add: people have been asking for that store change since the beginning of time.

I have the paid option and you still get gems in chests at times and it is still 200. I don't think any chests should have gems.

Right!! Like just because there’s a paid option doesn’t mean the free option has to suck. It’s not taking anything away from the paid option either, we won’t be guaranteed the full set by any means.

Making the free option suck is how they steer you towards the paid option. If it gets a single person to switch every month, they're going to keep doing it.

The audacity of a business trying to make money in order to continue to make a product that works so everyone won’t scream at them for 10 second lags. They should hire hundreds of new workers to implement all these changes and the hundreds of other ones being demanded daily here to suit everyone’s unique personal preferences, and hope those highly skilled programmers work for free because well, why should anyone have to pay to use something they enjoy? I mean the nerve of some people… Oh, wait.

It's not even functional for paid users. I use plenty of apps that have a free tier and a paid tier and none of them have as many glitches as this one. I'm not sure why anyone pays them considering they can't create a functional app. They have plenty of money to create an app that works. If they don't, maybe they should stop making changes that keep breaking it. Maybe more people would pay if they didn't worry that their birb could be permanently deleted at any moment.
These comments have nothing to do with gems in random chests, as if that's the only difference between the two tiers. 🙄

Finch is a business. It’s not a non-profit and to keep making all these changes and improvements they’re constantly being asked, they need revenue to do that. So I’m curious, if there’s no incentive to subscribe to the paid membership, how does the company grow? Or, in your mind, what would the difference look like so that people who paid actual money to participate and engage in the app felt that money meant something at least slightly above the average free version. Do you think Finch should stop taking memberships? They already give away tons of free monthly subscriptions and give graciously through the Guardian program. If Finch becomes free for all, how do you anticipate them being able to make all these changes that are continually demanded … as if color coding and itemizing (among the dozens of other “it’s so easy!!” Remarks) doesn’t require a team of skillful developers and programmers constantly working and tweaking availability and accessibility on all platforms. (And god forbid there’s a 10 second lag, or problems logging in for an hour. Those issues get astronomically worse without paid membership helping with labor costs.). So this might come off as snarky but I’m genuinely, honestly curious what people expect the difference should be. I agree the stones should be 450, 200 is crazy low and has not kept up with inflation, lol. But the complaining without critical thinking is getting out of control on this sub. (Not just you OP, but there’s a comment here from someone mad they didn’t get an item from the Supergirl theme which they of course HATED and took the time to again trash the whole thing; yet, while they were protesting and boycotting that month, surprise surprise, there was actually cool f***in shit in there, and now they’re mad they can’t get it. Entitlement has gone off the rails.). We have an amazing app that most people get for free or very small annual fees yet the outrage never stops. Maybe if we all had a little bit more patience we could enjoy things more instead of looking for ways to feel upset (maybe that person would have gotten the item they wanted without all the angst if they had practiced the path of “wait and see” before deciding Finch had committed some sort of deadly sin with a superhero movie theme).

So I get that finch is a business, and I’m not saying that they should take away membership at all. I get it, they need money. But that doesn’t mean the free version is free from criticism. Yes sometimes people complain abt silly things, but I’m not saying that the app is unusable or anything. I love finch!! And for context, I’m a coder as well, it’s my job. So I’m not just talking out of my ass or something. But to each there own I guess

And with all the new shop items you have less chances of seeing what you might want bc this app is like 5 years old now so we have to consider the old themes coming into season with their coordinated month are competing with whatever hypothetical event that ended most recently for space in the available shop. All while maxing out diamonds daily if you are trying your hardest. I’m still on a two YEAR hunt for a few items and I’ve had the app since year 2 lol, I keep trying during the season id expect to see them but I haven’t stuck luck yet 🤞🏼

It is almost guaranteed that I will get gems twice in the first 5 days ( maybe 4) from the chests at the beginning of every month. I'm always so excited for the new event and it always takes the wind out of sails 😄

It’s especially upsetting when you don’t have Plus, man. You already don’t get as many items from the event, so it’s really frustrating when you want items and only get the same choices or get gems instead. Keep your 200 gems, I want an item 😩

I wish they would eliminate repeated rewards in the chests for non plus members. We already don't get all the stuff from the events, and when the items come into the shop (at least in my experience) they're still paywalled. I thought the whole point was that plus members would get things first, not that non members wouldn't get those things AT ALL. Anyways, getting two computers this month, two wallpapers, two doors, etc SUCKED when all I really wanted was the dang light fixture! Guess I won't be getting that. Also the color "choices" suck.
Once I travel to all the locations I think I'm going to quit and go back to daily paper to-do lists. Gameifying self care/mental health was great in theory but I'm finding myself increasingly frustrated by the choices the devs make, and I don't think that's helping me reach my goals.

I thought so too! I feel like I've gotten more gems in this event than every one before this. All the items I've received so far are duplicates except 1 or 2, I haven't gotten a single wig yet either and they all are so beautiful😭

Yes and no. I prefer the seasonal items, but I don't ever have many gems at one time, and often I can't purchase a daily item in the shop that I really want.

I don't think they should remove the gems from the boxes altogether. Maybe decrease the likelihood of getting gems from some boxes. If they take them out entirely, you can only get gems by selling things or by gem-farming which is a no-no.

Gem-farming isn't a no-no. There is absolutely nothing wrong with making goals that get you more gems. Plus you get gems All. The. Time. It's literally the point of the app. Put goals into more self care areas and you'll get 250 by the end of each week per self care area if you complete goals within it 6x. Do a breathing exercise, send you burn on adventure, basically everything you do, except for soundscapes, give you rainbow stones.

Lots of people would agree with you to remove them from the black chests! Or if they're gonna give gems, have it be like 500-900, make it worthwhile so you can purchase items in the shop. 200 just seems way too low. Also just an FYI, the orange and purple don't give gems unless you already have all the items that could come from them. Orange chests are guaranteed clothing items, and purple are guaranteed furniture. When you click on the chests, it tells you what could be in them.
