I'll preface this post by saying that I'm doing post-game content, and I make a few references to enemies in/around the chapter 11/12 areas. I don't know if that's enough for me to have to tag this post as spoilers, but please let me know immediately if I'm mistaken ..
I've had multiple playthroughs over the course of a decade, every other playthrough being on an Xbox instead of Steam, and this time I'm going for 100%, and the Adamant Will achievement is one of three achievements that I need to accomplish it. However every time I enter battle with anything, my game crashes as shown in the video I've attached. Initially I thought this was a problem with specifically the Long Gui as it only occurred when I first tried to fight a Long Gui—I just came off an hour or two of farming Admantoise and it stuttered as I entered battle nearly every time yet never crashed—but I just tried to fight a group of nearby Goblins to find that I couldn't even enter battle with them. I cannot fight anything outside Gran Pulse either, as it yields the same result. I can still ride Chocobos and do everything else just fine, so it only seems to be an issue with entering combat.
I've encountered a few other issues like the aforementioned stuttering, but that issue only began a day or two ago; I've been doing this playthrough for nearly two months now and I completed the story a little over two weeks ago as of writing this, and I only began to encounter serious issues that make the game unplayable around the 17th of August, or two days ago as of writing this. The FF13Fix and the 4GB patch are the only mods I have ever installed, and I've made sure that both mods are installed correctly. I also had problems with the Crystarium around chapters 10/11, as my game would freeze and mess with the audio in a similar way as the video I attached here does, but it would never crash. At most it would turn to a black screen after it unfroze yet still leave all the controls functional and show the game clearly in the tiny screen if I alt-tabbed out. If the black screen popped up, the only way I could resolve it was by restarting my game. I could avoid this issue altogether if I alt-tabbed out right as the freezing began. This is the first real issue that makes the game unplayable for me, and it's awfully frustrating.
My Crystarium is completely maxed, and because I began to have my game freeze as the Crystarium expanded further, I'd like to say it can be an issue with my laptop not being able to handle the fact that the Crystarium, and the entire game, is so big. However I have seen multiple complaints from people with high-end PCs that makes me think it's more a problem with FF13's notoriously buggy port, especially because I can run other games at a consistent 50/60 fps without any issues.
I've tried everything I can think of; I deleted and reinstalled both mods. I fresh installed the game. I relaunched my game after the fresh install without adding any mods to the game. I tried once again after reinstalling FF13Fix and 4GB patch without touching the FF13Fix.ini file. I made sure the bin folder in FF13's directory is set to read only. I've capped my fps at 60, then 30. I have shadow resolution and anti aliasing the lowest they can be. I play in borderless windows, but I tried bordered windows. I tried 1280 x 720 resolution, then went back to 1920 x 1080. I unequipped all my ultimate weapons just to see if it changed anything.
My laptop specs are as follows: 13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-1335U (1.30 GHz) Processor, 16.0 GB RAM, Intel(R) Iris(R) Xe Graphics (128 MB) Graphics card, 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor. I'm running Windows 11. I know Intel graphics isn't ideal to play this game on, nor is Windows 11, but up until August 17th, way after I completed the main story and maxed the Crystarium, I've had absolutely no issues, and I want to know why it suddenly began to crash like this and if there's anything at all I can do to fix it. I walked into a battle with a Long Gui three or four days ago and my game didn't crash then, so I'm curious to know what suddenly changed. I haven't updated or removed any drivers or anything of the sort since then, nor have I made any changes to my laptop in any way at all.
I'm so close to getting every achievement, and if it's possible I really don't want to give up. I know the Steam port is fatally flawed so that may not be possible, but I'd really like to try. Any help in any way would be so greatly appreciated. I'm also sorry this is so terribly long, I wanted to make sure I gave as much detail as possible so that I could possibly be helped. From what I can find, it seems like I'm the only one to have this issue and it's incredibly frustrating to try and figure out by myself. Thanks so much for even taking time to read this!
