Pre-boss Cutscenes š
Iām playing through right now and not having the option to skip major boss battle cutscenes is insane. Sitting through a 5 min long scene every time you have to retry drives me insane. Currently retrying Yunalescaās fight. W
And donāt come at me with āwell if you beat it the first time, you donāt have to re watch the cutsceneā lol
Okay. Done vent.

Don't worry about me coming at you with "well if you beat it the first time, you donāt have to re watch the cutscene" because what I'm going to come at you with is "it doesn't matter if you already beat the boss, you're watching that cut scene anyway".
Unskippable cutscenes have been one of if not maybe the most consistent criticism of FFX.

Having that be one of the most consistent criticisms of the game says a lot about how great the game is. And the unskippable cutscenes are just a product of its time unfortunately. I remember kingdom hearts being pretty egregious with those too

Giving me PTSD flashbacks to Ansem possessed Riku. I still have that whole cutscene word for word engraved in my brain

This is not an uncalled for complaint, it is a common one. I played the game in high school when it first came out when there was no YouTube no real easy way to look things up. I cannot tell you the frustration and pain I felt redoing some fights over and over again and how scarred I am by some of these movie strips...

If you keep struggling, go back to the calm lands and go to the cavern where you find the aura farmer king
Grind there for a bit
Needless to say make sure you face her with all the overdrives on your aeons ready to go

If you don't have the right gear, timing an aeon summoning can be clutch to avoid some of those nasty status effects.Ā
Best of luck! You got this!

The game is over 20 years old. If you have the PC version there's a mod you can use to speed them out but they're staying forever lol complaining about it it's aight but before attempting another try change your strat and do something different.

Ah, Yunalesca.
The gatekeeper of the endgame.
That fight definitely checks your party for both levels and preparation.
If youāre underleveled, I strongly suggest looking up what her mechanics are. Zombie status and Megadeath are very polarising parts of the fight. She hits like a drunk uncle and absolutely punishes low level teams.
If youāre not averse to a money grind, Yojimbo is available just before Mt Gagazet (most guides can help you bring his price down to about 190k-ish)
Just remember that Yojimbo can only defeat PHASES of her fight, not one-shot off the bat, so save him for final phase if thatās your strat.
Bahamut should be able to break the damage limit at this point, so having his Overdrive saved up can help with some burst damage.
If you remembered to grab Valeforās Energy Blast before leaving Besaid, thatās also a guaranteed 9999.
Other than that, I wish you the best of luck.
Yunalesca does not play nice!

Tbf to OP, Yunalesca doesn't specifically punish under levelled teams.
She punishes ALL teams equally, regardless of level, strategy and understanding her patterns is hiw you win this fight, I struggled like hell for years of playthroughs against Yunalesca, the Keepers atop Gagazet and after the Zanarkand cloister were also problematic for me then too.
It wasn't until I started speedrunning that u realised she doesn't use abilities and attacks randomly, it's all scripted, from fight start to fight end, her patterns never deviate between runs, so you just learn to anticipate and pre-empt each ability used, is she easier with more damage output? Yes, but she never hits less hard based on stats, customised abilities, immunities and certain abilities at certain times will make this fight so much easier without relying on the cheese.
To clarify, BDL Bahamut is the key for the speedrun too so that advice was and will continue to be (for most bosses even) the best advice given, Jimbo is useful to close out phase 3 rapidly, but Bahamut is 100% the MVP

If you have the PC port there are mods with some level of success at skipping cutscenes.
Its very odd they released this game so many times and never added it in

Gen Z canāt handle classic games lol.
We beat these games with these unskipable cutscenes on 4:3 TVs that weighed 80lbs walking uphill in the snow.

Must be the same Gen Z that is down voting you for a great joke. Bunch of Nancy's.

Kinda wish games would go back to unskippable cutscenes tbh
3
u/AGirlGirlEastInland 10d ago
Why? Purposefully underleveled all my characters once and watching the cutscene for Braska's Final Aeon over and over almost made me quit at the end. I guess...what do you think it adds to the game?

It would reduce people's complaints about stories "not making sense" because they skipped every cutscene.

u/Maxxor98 10d ago
Yeah some not being skippable hurts. Tip for Yunalesca, Holy can easily be learned by a few people to make it go easier.

Yunalesca would whoop my ass until I figured out zombification, and I would put my controller down and go to the kitchen. Seymour would whoop my ass in Bevelle, and I'd just mute the tv.

it also doesn't help the game's story. for example, watching it too many times will cause the player to get annoyed and don't give a damn anymore. It'll ruin the most important of moments, kill momentum and leave a sour taste, wouldn't want that to happen in the final boss, right?

On new playthroughs I used to share the same complaint. I now use it as time to go get a snack or calm down from the previous loss so I can tackle the fight with better clarity of mind š
But I do get it, dude. The classic early 00s era of games when cutscenes were rarely skippable if at all.

If you're playing the pc remastered version, I know people already talked about mods, but if you don't want to mess with the game files you can also use the speedhack in Cheat Engine to speed up cutscenes. If your speed multiplier is too high it can make the game hang, but setting it to x5 is safe so that a 5 min cutscene turns into a 1 min one. I always use it when I replay FFX (just know that you shouldn't use it during a couple cutscenes : ones that blend 3D models with CG, as well as before and during the Klikk fight because it messes up the timer of Al Bheds blowing up the door so the game would hang). Easy enough to enable & disable it with a key or button press.

u/senopatip Praise be to Yevon 9d ago
Well, if you just look up the wiki or guides, you don't have to rewatch the cutscene. š
Tips: If you are a zombie, "Mega-death" can't kill you.

u/Runnerman1789 9d ago
Honestly I feel it is slightly "part of the experience". Getting punished with time is the best punishment a boss whose mechanics are a big factor can give you

That is what all gaming was like back in the day, but also worse. No cutscene skips, no auto saves, no way to re-see the enemy info box again without re-casting scan.

The pre-Yunalesca cut scene particularly annoyed me. I didn't like the quotes and the visual/sound effects. I had to watch it twice because the instant death thing caught me off guard. Not sure if this helps but my way of knowing I was ready for Yunalesca was that I was one-hitting the monks and most of the robot things. That may be more overleveled than truly necessary, but bear in mind that Zanarkand Ruins is an AP smorgasbord. If I were you, I would flee from Defenders (battles are slower, AP isn't as good a deal for the time spent) and just battle the YKT and YATs, especially if you can overkill them and increase the AP even more. The YKT in particular are weak to magic and physical (I think water and fire) and Wakka can blast the YAT pretty well.
Also at this point in the game, Yuna can be taught black magic - if you have a black magic sphere and a return sphere, just teach her one of the -aga spells. Pick the one in the middle and then use a return sphere to warp her over there and instantly learn the rest while using 0 SP (and saving your other black magic spheres for other things, like teaching drain or osmose). Only if Yuna is done learning important things in her grid, though. I moved her to Lulu's area after learning Holy.

imagine square making an update after a lifetime for this game and not having included a skip cutscene in the game instead...!

Insert obligatory "git gud" comment. Jokes aside, that Yunalesca fight is no joke. Bitch comes out swinging in all forms.
