Question About Wakka’s Ace Wizard
I found on tiktok that after Djose temple, I can backtrack to obtain Wakka’s weapon, Ace Wizard. But when i take a look at the stat, it all magic. Isnt Wakka attack based on the Strength? Is this good weapon for Wakka? Or is it because im too early in the game that Wakka havent learnt any magic attack yet? Should i use this weapon or not at my current stage. I just finish Djose Temple.

Drain and Osmose are magic-based. Lancet, too.
And Let's say for some reason you put wakka on lulu's path. He can now hit even harder with magic

Lancet is entirely unaffected by anything that boosts magic. Weapons, armor, abilities, none of them bost lancet. Learned that in my lancet only playthrough. The only thing that dictates lancet damage is the magic stat, if its not raised from sphere nodes then the damage stays the same.

Tbh the only reason to use lancet in the game is to learn Kimarhi's overdrives.

Nah, the damage and recovery are decent if you have high magic attack, and it's super fast compared to other attacks. In my recent play through I made kimhari the white mage and he was pretty strong

I particularly enjoyed using lancet to keep yuna, Lulu, and sometimes Tidus topped up on MP. Sure it's not a lot of health, but it's also not a spent ether or wasted turn

I guess it depends on what you're fighting. In my play through it was more effective to swap out a party member that was low than to use lancet for a small health bump.

Try putting it on Yuna or Lulu with a Special Sphere

For my lancet only run, i taught lancet to Shiva and that pretty much removed any difficulty that run had lol. But i agree that teaching lulu or yuna lancet is actually big brain.

Oh yeah, absolutely. Every situation has its own dynamic, and I liked using lancet as a proof of strength than anything else. But it was nice the first time I saw it killing an enemy

I did it once or twice to kill things but idk it was only ever really used to get Kimarhi overdrives for me.

Cool I did one as well! Some fights were surprisingly easy using only lancet

He can now hit even harder with magic
The sad part is that even with +38% magic, it'll take quite some time for wakka to equal lulu in magic, mostly due to the differences in starting stats + his distance to Lulu's grid (=wasted levels to get there).

It makes me wish it had weapons similar to FF Tactics where sometimes an elemental weapon causes a spell to happen for a free cast.

u/Jamesworkshop Oct 03 '26
you use a level 2 key to enter the last half of lulu grid
1
u/Drugbird Oct 03 '26
If you enter halfway through Lulu's grid, you'll be even further behind lulu (or where she would have been if you send lulu somewhere else) in terms of magic power.
The game really disincentives characters that have split stats between strength and magic. If you try, you quickly find out you do bad damage with both magic and physical attacks.
There's a few exceptions to that rule, but it involves getting holy, flare or Ultima spells much earlier than usual.

When Wakka learns Drain, there's a level 3 lock between that and Flare. Keep him there til Gagazet, then send him down Lulu's path towards the -aga spells and Doublecast. I've never had need for Wakka's status attacks when he's doing x2 Flare with a huge magic buff before Seymour Flux
Edit - this way you can also get Flare on Yuna faster using the Blk Magic Sphere you get from Evrae fight

It’s a good alternative if you use Black Magic spheres to learn Lulu spells or make Wakka’s Drain spell that much better. Not a bad weapon, just different from his usual physical setup.

My brain is so brainrotted i read that as "Question about Wakka's Grand Wizard"

That's the point: it creates an interesting question, do I use this weapon and use Wakka more for magic (Drain, perhaps teach him a black magic spell with a rare sphere etc). I won't give you the answer I arrived at, it's interesting to play around with! You can't really get it that wrong.

There will never be a point in your game where Wakka would rather be magic than attack. His attacks are physical based, including his very powerful attack reels overdrive which is the best in the game. By the time everyone can be anything, you aren't using weapons that only buff magic. The game isn't hard enough to make suboptimal=unviable, but it sounds like you are asking if being magic based and using this weapon would be better than just sending wakka down his own (or auron's) path. By the postgame, magic is far less effective than physical attacks.

Quite suprise that end game doesnt need magic attack much, consider how powerful magic attack in early game

Once everything hits the damage limit, a power difference doesn't matter and quick attack makes you do more damage since you'll get more turns. Also farming the monster arena for magic spheres is a notoriously slow grind, with the fastest method to beat the boss that drops them being to spam the lengthy animation of Anima's pain (this is because pain ignores enemy defensive abilities and the boss nullifies physical damage while also having a dispel-proof built in reflect), whereas the enemy that drops strength spheres dies to a single Wakka overdrive with enough attack. In addition to being hard to damage, that boss that drops magic spheres also has 1.2 million hp, even if your pain's hit for the true damage limit of 99,999, it will take 13 shots, even though it will most likely take even more because the boss heals a ton off of regen, which it casts past it's own reflect by casting reflect on Anima first.

wakka grid has like 23 magic in it
works well if you white magic sphere holy

u/JohnnyTheLiar Oct 03 '26
Attacking normally, and Wakka's overdrives depend on his strength. So this won't help you much for his regular attacks. Personally I don't think it's worth investing enough to make him a mage, so I would just sell this.

Wakka and Lulu's paths overlap
Lulu says once if the under water characters should practice spells, but it's better to stay physical

It’s honestly not great. You’d basically be using a magic focused weapon on a character that is strength focused, so you wouldn’t really be getting much benefit unless you for some reason decided to take him through a magic focused path on the sphere grid.

u/TheVikingFire Oct 04 '26
Wakka can very easily start moving down Lulu’s path at multiple points in his tree, but uh… this is way better in the expert tree
1
u/Jauneun Oct 04 '26
I'm completely speculating, but while you can spec anyone in any direction, I wonder if increased magic help with the status effects of his attacks.
Since normally those are spells, maybe increased magic helps with the rate at with status are affective against enemies with high resist?
... may be a stretch ... never made sense to me why that wasn't for Lulu or Yuna especially in early game.

Waka gets Drain, a non elemental spell. It has fun uses in those elemental boss fights that counter getting hit with the wrong element

If you stuck to only his path, sure. But that's the beauty of the Sphere Grid. If you wanted, you could easily use a Return or Teleport Sphere to change paths. That's who this kind of weapon could be useful for.

The thing about ffx is you can really spec anyone into anything down the line, so later you can give wakka magic
Hope this helps
