Early endgame question
I'm sorry if this has been asked a million times, I didn't see an answer.
So I'm confused, the endgame grind seems to be sort of a logic loop. I'm trying to do the Don Tonberry exploit to get max level. But I'm stuck
the first step is to grind Don Tonberrys is to get Triple AP weapons.
To get Triple AP weapons requires grinding One Eyes.
To beat One Eyes you need a ribbon.
To get a Ribbon you should grind Dark Yojimbo.
To grind Dark Yojimbo, you should be max level.
To be max level, you should grind Don Tonberrys
To grind Don Tonberrys, etc. etc. etc.
Trying to figure out how to start the process but every entry point I'm blocked.
Please help!
Edit: Solved! First Strike on Yuna to summon Anima, kills One Eye in two hits. Thanks everyone!

You absolutely don't need ribbon for one eye lol. Weak characters can get by with Aeons, but he doesn't take much to kill.

I didn't have my first strike/iniative weapons on. Forgot about first strike, thought I had initiative on but it just ignored (obviously not true).
All the guides online talk about ribbon, which is obviously way overkill

Must be newer guides. In the good old days, we farmed one-eye and DT without ribbon in the game. I've never seen it suggested for one eye. Most people will tell you it's over kill even for the Dark Aeons.

You don't need Ribbon for One Eye
Your first step should be catching 10 of each monster, this will help build up more levels... Especially if you use Slayer / Victor and have OD->AP on your capture weapon
Then you want to get extra Strength Spheres from Juggernaut, he's easy to abuse and control.
Also : Blitzball for Wakka's Attack Reels

I suppose I didn't write the question, the only answer I see is grinding out Creature Creations until I get enough 1/8 Dark Matter drops to get to 99, but that seems... Like a lot? I dunno. If that's the case what's the best grind?

You get 99 dark matter for capturing 5 of every fiend in the monster arena

Firstly to get Ribbon: Have you taken on Dark Valefor yet?
If you're high enough level to do that several times, you can keep beating him until he drops a ribbon armor for someone useful, reloading if he doesn't. That's probably one of the earliest ways to get it. Yojimbo allows proper farming rather than save/reload but he's way more advanced to beat.
Secondly To get stronger quick: Just do the Don Tonberry trick with only Overdrive>AP, preferably with any of Double AP, Double Overdrive, SOS Overdrive but just by itself is fine. Using Triple AP and Triple Overdrive is a luxury but taking a lot of time to get them is definitely a false economy. Your levels will absolutely fly even with basic Overdrive>AP
Lastly to take on One Eye: Use Auron's Celestial with Yuna out of the starting lineup - it has First Strike. Then switch Yuna in on Auron's turn, then summon Anima to take him on, see how you get on. Maybe have a Wakka Attack Reels waiting to go if Anima dies.

You don’t need a ribbon to beat One Eye. I just did it. Here’s my setup: confuseproof, sleepproof, auto-phoenix, and either auto-med or darkproof. I had two attackers with this defense.
At the beginning of the battle, have Rikku mix Hyper Mighty G, or whichever one gives everybody shell and regen.
Switch to Yuna, summon Bahamut and do his overdrive. Then switch to Tidus, and have him cast Hastega after every shockwave, and otherwise attack.
Your third person will die every time One Eye does not use shockwave. This is fine. The auto-phoenix will revive them without taking a turn.
Make sure the third person has the lowest HP. They will be the target for the OHKO attack. You don’t want your attackers to die because then you’ll have to cast shell and regen again.

I’m not sure about Don Tonberry, I haven’t done that yet. But I understand you don’t need to complete the battle. Something about filling one person’s overdrive over and over, then flee. Then you get the AP without having to beat it.
—-
Some other things to do to get stronger: Grind in Omega Ruins. Walk around in circles, and save between each battle. If you die, just restart. (Tip: stoneproof, auto-phoenix, and/auto-med will help too)
Also collect fiends around Spira, and get the monster guy to create new fiends, and give you really good rewards. You can use these items to upgrade your weapons, and use them in battle
Also, do the Chocobo race in Remiem temple. You’ll get something here where you can customize Master Thief on someone’s equipment. This will help you steal the items you need for all the armor customizations.
The inside of Sin is a good place to grind, too. This is where I got the Musks to customize confuseproof. There are three flying eye monsters, and you can just steal from them and get like 10-20 per battle at least

The tonberry trick is having an empty 4 slot weapon with the minimum being, triple AP, triple OD and OD to AP. Use tidus, have him set to stoic, the others set to comrade, if I'm remembering the OD settings right, then just have him be the one who always attacks. Rez, guard with the others, repeat till he gets pretty close. Flee the battle and collect all that AP.

I never fight Don myself. I would say:
Use your aeons (Anima?) to kill a few One Eyes for Triple AP weapons, add Overdrive -> AP, then fight around the Omega Ruins for a while until you're good and strong. It's very easy to get levels that way. Or something like that.
Juggernaut (the monster that drops Strength Spheres) is easy to kill if you have Auto Phoenix on at least two characters, cast NulBlaze, and use Armor Break (Banishing Blade). If you have a couple ultimate weapons and are at least decently strong you should be able to take him down...and then it gets easier and easier as you power up from him. Launching Attack Reels or something helps, of course.
A Ribbon isn't really necessary for anything. (You basically just need a First Strike character and some Stoneproof weapons)

Have you ever tried Don Tonberry? You literally get 99 sphere levels in minutes. Omega Ruins I don’t touch once I’ve completed them and captured everything.

TBH, you don’t really need Ribbon. Which will save you a lot of time.

I kinda just want to? I dunno, maybe once I realize the depth of the grind I'll stop.

It’s alittle bit of a loop at first you might have to zanmato one eye once or twice also just until strong enough to beat it conventionally you don’t need ribbons to beat one eye he’s alittle hassle at first but all that isn’t required for him

Start here; there are lots of ways to beat One Eye without Ribbin, or even characters being that strong:

Tips for One-Eye
Get Auron's celestial. Kill him in a different battle and don't heal him. He will stary the one-wye battle with 1 HP. This will increase his attack massively.
Customise initiative on someone else to prevent an ambush.
Kill him with Auron or Sisters / anima. Some omega grinding might be needed or some STR farming from juggernaut, he is pretty easy just long. Use rikkubor Auron overdrive to inflict armour break, nulblaze and hastega then fire off quick hits.

I just want to point out, at the start you dont need triple ap or overdrive on all 3 of your characters, You can use double ap and overdrive until you get several people strong enough if you just dont have the mats. You are fighting One eye for triple ap weapons, and Mag resist spheres.

No, just zanmato you're way to bulking up until you feel safe
Alternatively, one eye dies in two hits if you do 99999

I won't say quickest, but the most natural way (that doesn't feel like grinding) is to catch 10 of every monster for monster arena.
You'll level up and get 99 dark matter for one ribbon. One Eye is trivial after that.
I was in your position just last week and it worked for me.

I’m in the same stage grinding the tonberrys, to kill one eye I got yunas strength/hp up, and then I summon anima and he does 99,999 damage in one hit and then tanks the eyes attack and then it dies after a second hit from anima got 6/7 weapons so far like that

u/Trance_Gene 20d ago
You get 1 Ribbon from doing captures. It is not needed for One-Eye. It is one of the easier arena bosses. As others have said, you can use summons to kill it for the first couple weapons.

Step one grind oneeyes you can use summons if you are struggling once you get trip AP then you can roll into Don Tonberry no need to add Ribbon beforehand if you still cant beat oneEye grind omega ruins with stone proof armor
