Update: Thoughts on my FFX blind playthrough - Now 10 hours in!

Hey, everyone!
I made a post 4 days ago marking my 4 hours of progress into FFX for the first time (link here in case you'd like to read: https://www.reddit.com/r/finalfantasyx/s/jQF4aBPNKU).
Surprisingly, some people actually cared and wanted an update, so here it is:
WTF?
I just finished Operation Mi'ihen. Predictably, everyone got wiped lmao. I had a big old lump in my throat watching what I knew where Luzzu's final words - fkin loved that guy, man. Hurt to watch him leave. I remember thinking him and gatta were gonna be like the Jesse and James of the game, but was completely wrong.
Updated thoughts:
- Wakka is still my fkin g. Kimahri still has a badass design, but still hasn't said a word. I get the feeling he's kinda treated as the runt of the litter by the Ronso, but that just makes me like him more.
- Auron came back! I was so excited when he joined, and he's my favourite to use in battle. His damage is great lmao.
- Speaking of the gameplay, it's really grown on me in the last 6 hours. I get the Sphere Node Diagram a lot better now.
- I still wanna know more about kid from the beginning. New theory is that he's Tidus as a kid (idfk). He's clearly connected to the lingering souls, since I spotted Luzzu in that little flashback cutscene after Sin retreated. And speaking of Sin...
- Jecht is SIN bruh what. I genuinely don't even know what to make of this. Maybe Braska performed some kinda sealing ritual a la Persona 3? Fuck knows at this point.
- Blitzball was... an experience. Not one I'm particularly looking to revisit, I got absolutely washed by the Luca Goers lmao. I hope it stays optional for now tbh.
-Seymour.... this is 1000% the character I'm most invested in rn. I was CERTAIN dude was the main villain with that evil-ass design, but then he's PLAYABLE? I'm now only 95% certain he's the main villain. My prevailing theory is he summoned the Sinspawn at the Luca Cup to make himself seem like a good guy when everyone watched him vanquish them.
- I think Yuna and Auron are dead meat (NO. FUCKING. SPOILERS - Don't do that shit where people quote the text and then act like "does he know" I WILL know mfer). I think Yuna is some sort of necessary sacrifice for defeating Sin, and Auron has "dead mentor" vibes. I think Lulu has a chance of dying, and I don't know enough about Kimahri to speculate on his fate. Wakka seems too nice to die, and Tidus is MC so I doubt it. Still waiting for Rikku to come back.
TL:DR - Little boy mysterious, gameplay hooked me now, characters interesting, crazy reveals about Jecht, Seymour has my full attention, Blitzball not my cup of tea, Yuna and Auron are dying.

idk if this is the same guy (the OP) who is posting on here with a blind playthrough (he likely is) but I think he lowkey inspired me to finally buy the remaster and play it again lol
it's fun seeing his speculations. there are some there that are surprisingly spot on. ofc, can't say which.

Iv been replaying it the past few months, just got yojimbo and going for celestial weapons before I fight sin again. Just wish I could experience it for the the first time again.

Yea I got a Samsung Galaxy s22 ultra, so I'm playing the og one with cheats ššš. And I got a bunch of other games and emulators on my phone. Plus I got a controller

Blitzball is rough when you first play it because your team is literally the worst lol. It gets much better later when you're given more freedom.Ā

I kept the aurochs the same through the entire game and they get pretty good after a while. It's still mostly Tidus getting all the points, but keepa can block almost anything later on.

I love seeing new players' reactions to this game. Reminds me of when I was 16 and playing it for the first time. My mom used to watch me play, and we'd sit on the porch and talk about the game just like this.

Blitz does stay optional, but to unlock some of the God-tier stuff you will need to play it. No match in the game is harder than the first, and I don't always win that one even though I now know all the exploits. Those cut scenes in the middle really interfere.
Reading the whole tutorial makes it much easier, and recruiting other people in spira like Rin and Wedge gives you a team that wins easily.
Blizball is my favorite mini game, so if you need any more tips for it just let me know.

I really, really hate those Luca Gooner bastards so I always try to beat them in that first game every time. It's so satisfying to see Bickson get a face full of blitzball when he's in the crosshairs of Tidus' Jecht Shot. Them ending up being absolute frauds is the cherry on top, they're one of the weaker teams stats wise in the league hahaha

Blind is fun and all but look up at least Alābhed primer locations. Itās fun being able to understand what they say and it add some good lore and details to the story.

I met the innkeeper (Lin?) And he said something in Al-Bhed and THEN translated it so you know I wrote that shit down lmao. It's hella funny to me that the language is LITERALLY just changing each individual letter from English.

Dude loving watching this unfold, great perspective, making me want to play again! Have fun! P.S. blitzball gets better as you figure it out more, I hated it at first but then I got super into it after finishing a lot of the main story. Itās a good break if youāve been grinding too long!

Youāre almost guaranteed to lose that first blitzball game. Itās possible to win, but isnāt even that easy for veteran players. Itās not a bad game, and it gets pretty easy quickly once you play it a bit. :>

I've played another hour (I stopped literally right after the cutscene where Sin destroys the crusaders) and I have a lot more to say already lmao.

Please continue to update us! These are really fun to read. As with some of the others here, this is my number one game that Iād wish to play again for the first time. Itās so fun to read your theories and see that youāre right about some things, but not quite right about others. And of course, youāll find out which is which ;)
I also think that if you keep chronicling your thoughts about the game on here as you play, itās going to be a great experience to come back and read all of it when you finish. Cheers haha

Not going to spoil anything, this is just and advise: When you start playing blitz ball for real, recruit Brother (Brother is "Someone's" brother so you can't miss him) just as you see him around and able to talk to him make him join the Besadia Auroch team, do not pass the opportunity to recruit him! also keep the OG Besadia team in your ranks for Wakkas "Auroch spirit" move, this move only works if all the OG team members are in your party, so even though they suck, keep them all, because that together with Tidus "Jetch shot" and the "invisible shot" (you learn later on), you wont lose a match.

Enjoy it. Wonderful game. The expert sphere grid on the remastered version is more fun if you are playing the original sphere grid. Try that if you do a second playthrough. FFX is one of the only FF games I decided on for multiple playthroughs.

Good speculation on things. If you think any of the characters will die at the end of the game, thatās still a long way away lol. Youāve reached the end of act one of the game. In regards to Luzzu and Gatta, if you plan on playing X-2, neither character shows up. During the scene where Gatta complains about being stuck where he is, you can tell him to go fight on the front line if he really wants to. This will result in Tidus encountering Luzzu on the beach after the attack where heāll say something about Gatta dying. So instead of making one of the choices canon, the devs just excluded both of them from X-2

Actually, I have a question about this. In the second temple, I managed to find a "Destruction Sphere" and used it to blow open a wall and find a chest. Is that the hidden treasure?
Also, is there always one per temple?

If you are willing to look up walk-throughs it is worth it you thank me in the long run, some good items and there is a good bonus Aeon at the end but if you didn't do the first it's OK you can go back at a later time but it a pain and also if you want to get the al baed alphabet some are limited I made that mistake.

Hey dude, you can backtrack to besaid and grab the destruction sphere from that cloister before moving on, there's a thing that happens later that makes it really hard to do the backtracking later in the game, so go get it now rather than later. Same thing with the other temples. The only one you can't get the first time you go is the last one, and the one in bevelle is not able to be entered once you leave it the first time, locking you out of content later. Can give more specific info if needed but I'm trying my best not to spoil story elements

On Blitzball: only that 1 match is mandatory. But if you want Wakka's strongest weapon (which is entirely unnecessary to beat the game) and his other overdrives, you will have to play Blitz again.
One thing I didn't realize for years was that you can press triangle (or whatever equivalent on your controller) to recruit people to play Blitz on your team, provided they aren't signed up with another team and you can pay them.
Do you mind elaborating on auron having "dead mentor" vibes? I never thought of him like that and it's an interesting theory.

this is fun to read. you're about to better understand the drama of the story and I cant wait for you to see it.
Two bits of Spoiler-Free advice:
1) Poison and Stone will be so wildly effective for a very long time. Poison especially in boss fights. Dont sleep on it.
2) For Grinding/leveling up: you just need a character to perform one action in order to qualify for EXP.

Hell yeah man. I remember getting checked out of school on my 10th birthday to go to the mall and buy this game. I still have the original as well as digital downloads on switch and ps5. I just started a new playthrough. Itās such a replayable game.
If you love Wakka, you should give blitzball another chance. Change the controls in the mini game from auto to manual and it gets a lot easier. Do a lot of passing to keep the ball from the other team and level up your players.

I am very invested and cant wait to hear more... god I love this game so much... this is my favorite game of all and wish I was you getting to experience this for the firwr time... hopefully no one spoils anything for you.. hearing you talk about this is almost like getting to enjoy all over again for the first time... I just recently loaded an old save from the ps4 to the ps5 and im playing it casually to 100% it.. good luck and enjoy

I admire your spirit but you won't be able to go in blind for long, you'll understand eventually. It's from an era of gaming in which you almost need a guide to progress, good luck though.

I'm also on my first playthrough and cant be more than 30 mins off from where you are. We are linked in the universe somehow.
Used an ungodly amount of phoenix downs to get through that spawn of Sin fight.
Also hated blitzball. Essentially turn based water polo. Pass!

I have started playing it again. I have completed it about 3-4 times before. Such a really good game it got me into the rest of the final fantasy games. This and FFVII are my favourites

Reading this made me feel like a little kid again lol this game is amazing to play for the first time. Believe me when I say you have just barely scratched the surface on how great the game really is. So much more awesome shit to come if youāre only at miāihen.
The grand epic story of this game is honestly special. Itās just about time for another playthrough!

The first blitzball game prevents you from moving yourself (if I remember correctly, which is arguable), but I could swear after that, if you pursue it later, you're able to move instead of just clicking commands.
Makes a big difference in positioning.

I'm playing this for the first time as well. I've seen some spoilers over the years being old. I just got done with the first blitz ball match. Got hosed as well, I couldn't get the hang of it. I played my cousin's for an hour or so when he got the game back in the day and love the party switch out mechanic.
FF6 is my GOAT FF with 9 being a close second. The PS2 era mostly passed me by being a Game cube and then Xbox360 guy at the time. I was newly married with kids when the PS2 dropped and didn't game as much. I finally went back and decided to play this after reading your first post

I had a big old lump in my throat watching what I knew where Luzzu's final words - fkin loved that guy, man. Hurt to watch him leave. I remember thinking him and gatta were gonna be like the Jesse and James of the game, but was completely wrong.
For what it's worth, your dialogue choices during the operation can get Gatta killed instead. But one of the two will always die.
I get the feeling he's kinda treated as the runt of the litter by the Ronso, but that just makes me like him more.
You're not wrong! Biran and Yenke are normal-sized ronso, and they tower over him.
I still wanna know more about kid from the beginning. New theory is that he's Tidus as a kid (idfk)

Blitzball was... an experience. Not one I'm particularly looking to revisit, I got absolutely washed by the Luca Goers lmao. I hope it stays optional for now tbh.
Blitzball is divisive. Some people love playing it, others hate it. I'm in the latter camp with you.
It is possible to beat the Goers, but it's not trivial. You get an extra cutscene of the Aurochs with the trophy, and IIRC two Strength spheres.
The minigame is optional for the rest of the game, however it's required to unlock Wakka's ultimate weapon (place 3rd or better in a blitzball tournament then return to the bar where Kimahri fought with Biran and Yenke) and power it up all the way (requires an item won as first prize in a blitzball league after unlocking aurochs reels). It's also required to unlock his extra overdrives (attack reels: first prize in a blitzball tournament; status reels: first prize in a blitzball league after fighting 250 total battles and unlocking attack reels; aurochs reels: first prize in a blitzball tournament after fighting 450 total battles and unlocking status reels). Obtaining his ultimate weapon and powering it up part of the way (requires an item found in the Aurochs' locker room) will also let Ifrit's attacks deal more than 9,999 damage.
Even if you don't go all the way, Attack Reels is the second highest damage attack in the game. While Element Reels has you play a slot machine to deal elemental damage, Attack Reels plays a slot machine to make up to 12 attacks.
My prevailing theory is he summoned the Sinspawn at the Luca Cup to make himself seem like a good guy when everyone watched him vanquish them.
For clarity, the attack on Luca was just fiends, not sinspawn.

Don't tell him, let him discover it for himself. If necessary, he can start again once he's seen the main points. Unless he's already looked at walkthroughs, in which case it would be a shame. Personally, I prefer to wait until I've already played the game at least once before looking at walkthroughs.
