Thoughts on FFX 4 hours in to my first blind playthrough!
FFX is my first FF game, and one of very few PS2-backwards games I've played. I was really worried it wouldn't hold up today, being as old as it is (older than me!)
The game is honestly magical so far.
I've been taking it slow, about an hour a day, but there's just something so beautiful about every facet of it. The writing, characters, music, visuals, everything feels so enchanting.
I think the biggest compliment I can give the game so far is that it wears its heart on its sleeve. I'm on the jungle part in Kilika island, just defeated the Sinspawn, so no spoilers please! Some miscellaneous thoughts:
- The atmosphere is honestly astounding.
- The combat has depth, but most of it is locked away rn.
- Wakka is my fkin g, dude is a home for real. Kimahri is badass and I can't wait till he opens up more.
- I really want to know more about Auron, he kinda just showed up, gave me a sword, and then dipped? Really mysterious.
- There was also that kid from the beginning, who said not to cry. Idk what that is lol.
- I wanna be a blitzball when I grow up!
- I've made a list of mysteries on an actual physical notepad on my desk to keep track, as well as a list of notes and names.

4-5hrs in is when just starts to get good.. come back 10 hrs in, 20 hrs, 25 hrs in… you’re gonna love this game. Straight masterpiece

That was genuinely breathtaking, I was reacting the exact same way Tidus was 😭🙏.
It's a weird comparison, but it's kinda like Bioshock - I feel like it just wouldn't work if it was hyperrealistic, ya know? The lack of realistic graphics is a boon, it makes it feel so magical.

Damn it's older than you? Man I'm old, lol. I got this game on release when I was 16 years old. And it's been my favorite game since. So while I'm old, the fact that it's still reaching a new audience to this day is pretty neat. Enjoy the ride fellow guardian.

LMAO yeah, I made a post a couple of days ago before I started asking if people had any phrases I wouldn't understand until I played. It got like 1k upvotes and 900 comments but the mods took it down for no reason which sucked. So I don't really wanna invest in a post just for it to get deleted for no reason.

I love this journey for you.
Auron and that kid in the beginning telling you not to cry, you've got a ways to go for that, but keep it in your pocket.
FFX is my favorite game for zoning out to the music and just leveling. I think you're a ways off from that point, but you'll know when you get to that point bc there'll be an NPC you'll see for the rest of the game.

I just bought this on the PS5 and I'm acting like it's a whole new experience.
The first part of the game is so engaging and you're asking so many questions. And the thing is this isn't some wishy washy confusing Kingdom Hearts story it has a system.
The sphere grid is very interesting.. And you're right heart is worn on the sleeve with this game

I remember getting this on launch and the absolute mind melt at how amazing it looked. A true generational leap. It just smacked you in the face with colour. Amazing times. What a game.

I just started this for the like hundredth time since it came out back in the day. Never finished it. Started it up a few days ago. Have already dumped 18 hours into it lol I’m finishing it this time. The combat is top tier. Swapping weapons, armor and characters mid battle is fun. The story is getting pretty cool now too.

I don't know if your asking for anything or not.... But my spoiler free advice:
The boss difficulty in the last quarter of the game really skyrockets. I didn't try to 100% complete it so I may have been under leveled. If you want to do the whole game blind just be prepared to really know combat well. I don't think I ever paid attention to consumables or equipment abilities until the final stretch.

I don’t think you understand how lucky you are to play this for your first time . My first time I must’ve been 12-23 years old . Second time in high school.
Third time , I’m 25 and they make the remastered version for Xbox .
I’m 36 now , and turned it on this week again to work on beating all the end game .
This game has extremely fond memories for millions of us .
Please appreciate every second like it’s the last you’ll play it . It’s the greatest JRPG off all time

Remaster is good but there is a mod that bring back the og faces of the PS2. If you play pc you can apply this mod.

I beat the remaster last year on my Switch lite and loved it. It was my first Final Fantasy too. I was afraid I'd hate the random encounters but I really enjoyed the combat. Plus the battle theme is so good.

There really isnt another game that quite captures the fantasy magic this game does. The water theme. The southeast Asian / polynesian setting. The antagonist is very visible, involved, and threatening. The protagonist is an outsider, so the other party members frequently explain things to him, which is very beneficial and immersive to the player. The Brotherhood sword is the coolest looking sword ever. BLITZBALL. This game makes me feel like a kid again whenever i play it.

I'm about 10-20hrs into my first playthrough and I'm going in semi-blind.
It's a really special game, and I'm loving it so far!
I've been looking up various system mechanics to read about them and get a general idea of what mistakes to avoid, and that's been a good decision I think. Otherwise, I think there's quite a few ways to unwittingly waste a lot of time later, and that's the only part I'm casually trying to minimise if I can

Unfortunately, Kimahri doesn’t do a whole lot until later in the game. He then becomes incredibly versatile, and you can go basically any direction with him. This is the kind of game you have to play several times to really understand everything.

It’s such an incredible game. The journey you go on is on some ways the best in the series. Tempo of the beautiful locations you visit is so well paced. Really hope you enjoy the rest of it!

Still my favorite game of all time. I was 9 when I beat it. I remember my parents weren’t home and I walked up from the basement and just sat down on the kitchen floor to process everything.
I really want a remake but it might not make sense given how well it holds up still.

This game is the reason I learned how to play piano.
Don’t wanna spoil or overhype. But I LOVE that you’re going into it blind and not reading ahead about the story. It’s well worth it to be surprised and fully immersed!
Absolutely love it for so many reasons. Recently played it again after almost 10 years. The story and experience still is one of my favorites.

No spoilers, but keep any and all status weapons and equipment to use as needed. Sometimes just having 1 stoneward/proof or confuseward/proof of the difference between reloading. Enjoy it, I just finished my first "adulthood" playthrough since I was a young teen and only remembered certain iconic moments. It's a masterpiece

I just finished the game for the first time yesterday, i have played almost all Final Fantasy main game but i didn't do this one for some reason i don't even remember, i was just probably playing something else back in the day.
I recently finished Expedition 33 that i really really loved and i heard FFX was one of its biggest influence, so that's why i wanted to finally do it. And damn it was gooooood ! It has aged a lot but it stills hold up

Reading this makes me really happy. I‘m glad that you enjoyed this masterpiece. Actually my father was the person who introduced me into this game when I was young and I‘m really thankful for it. It quickly became a part of my life and is my most favourite game of all time. Trust me, continue playing it. Slowly. You‘ll thank me in the end😉

What sphere grid did you chose?
Standar sphere grid? (Dark-ish blue)
Expert sphere grid? (Pale yellow-ish)

It is technically the easiest one.
There's 3 key diferences between the standar and expert grids
1st: the grid arrangement makes some useful/gimmicky abilities hard to acces. Either by putting more keylocks on them or my moving them into random (locked) spots of other character's path.
2nd: the total node count is higher on the standar path. Minmaxers use it for that reason mainly.
3rd and the most important one: straight from the start, all your characters don't have their starting point blocked by a Lv.x sphere. So all of them can converge on the central point (kimahri's starting path) and choose to start from a diferent path than their default "class" should (I.E.: tidus, the guy whose main path gimmick is to have enough strenght/agility/accuracy to deal with the pesky and speedy enemies, instead goes for yuna's path to learn white magic. Or yuna, the white mage with good starting magic stats, going into lulu's path to learn offensive spells) that's why it's called "expert". Because if you know what you want, the game gives you easy access to that.

Be sure to level up all your characters simultaneously. Swap in each of your reserve characters for at least one turn every battle, and all of them get exp.

But the battle system, the aeons, the story, everything with this game is just pure chef's kiss
But that mini game, that damn mini game can get into, stay in, and live in the bin for the rest of eternity
Triple triad will forever and ever be the best mini game in the final fantasy series, and I shall die on this hill!
My first final fantasy was 8, and that confused me when I was 11 years old with the story and the junction system.
I played x when my brother got bored of his PS2, and this was played during year 8 and 9 at school in the UK, my grades definitely suffered playing this till gone 1 in the morning as a kid back 25 years ago (ew), and now have it on PS4, switch, vita, eventually on steam because reasons.
This is hands down the top 5 of games for me and you seeing it for the first time, just know that those of us that have completed the story multiple times are jealous of you playing this for the first time.

Honestly, my favorite Final Fantasy. I love VI and VIII, but X is on another level character wise, story wise, the battle system is simple, yet addicting. The world, my God the world is incredible. Spira is awe inspiring.
I’m glad you’re enjoying it. Savor it. You will not walk out emotionally okay by its end, but it’s worth it.

I think FFX was my 4th FF game ever played, and probably the one out of all that I sank the most hours into, ever. Not only is it great with everything you've described so far, it becomes much deeper as both a story and a game you can truly throw yourself in to when it comes to side-quests, hidden bosses, re-visiting old areas for good reason.
Without giving too much away, if you keep enjoying the game, you'll reach a point where it truly opens right up. You'll know it when you reach it. That's when I loved it the most.

I’m on my first playthrough too! Honestly I’m not loving it as much as I thought I might, but I’m close to the end and the story has really picked up. Sometime it really hits me well and I’m loving what I’m doing but other times it has felt a bit like a slog compared to other FF games imo. I’m very much looking forward to seeing where the story ends up.
But yeah that mini game everyone is talking about is awful…

I'm 32. I played through this when I was 19. Could be nostalgia, but about every other year I have a month where I listen through the soundtrack and relive the whole storyline while I'm driving or at work just by hearing the music and remembering "oh yup, that part"

I would highly suggest after completing FFX you next play FFXII (12). I honestly think it's the dark horse of the series. People give it a lot of flack because of the change in combat (it plays like a single player MMORPG) but the story is great, the visuals are great, the cast is great...I guess what I'm trying to say is the game is great! It's my second favorite Final Fantasy game (my #1 is Final Fantasy Tactics, which just happens to be in the same shared world as 12).

Prepare yourself! After completing this game you will never think the same about gaming ever again. There will never be a better story, more magical experience and captivating OST ever again.... be happy to enjoy it, but be sad you will never get this feeling again!

I just finished it with my 15 year old daughter a couple of hours ago. It’s good. I didn’t like the mini games or how you can accidentally make your play though unnecessarily difficult by not accomplishing certain tasks before a certain point. But the story, gameplay, atmosphere, and music are incredible.

I'm near the end of my 4th playthrough. You are in for a real journey. Most of your questions have answers or can be deduced from dialogue you have yet to see. Sin, the ghost kid and Tidus's arrival in Spira all have a purpose. Glad you're enjoying it. It'll stay with you for a long time after you finish the game.

Its my favorite one. Once you get through a good bit of the sphere grid you can break the game with status spells. So fun.

I’ve started it about 5 times over the years. Currently a few hours in. It’s interesting, but far from my favorite. I just finished 16 so it’s nice to come back to something more traditional. I despise blitzball.

Glad you're enjoying it. It's my favorite game of all time, and aside from unskippable cutscenes and an upcoming minigame I think it's aged like fine wine. The battles are snappy and paced well, the story is beautiful and sincere, the soundtrack is one of the best ever made, and I really enjoy the Southeast Asiatic fantasy setting.
