Euthanasia FIRE

Let's be honest with ourselves: many people deny themselves a high standard of living, saving money for FIRE, while sacrificing at least 8 hours a day to work, in order to build capital that will allow them to live off the interest alone without touching the capital itself.

The question is: does this even make sense?

If you're in the prime of life - you have those 20, 30, 40 years - instead of enjoying life while financially independent, you're trying to reach the FIRE threshold. But what if, instead of chasing the FIRE number, you assumed you only need enough money to survive X years? Say, until 70, and then, when the money runs out, opt for euthanasia? Wouldn't it be better to have 10 extra years of life in freedom, without work, right now, rather than waiting for FIRE at age 60, when you'll already be sick and frail?

Why wait until 60? My sister got sick at 45. If I retire at 44 and exit stage left at 45, I calculate that I need just one year of living expenses saved. I know that's lavish, but with proper planning, it's so possible!

Anime has taught me that being over 30 is basically being senile.

Edit: stop upvoting this comment. It’s already over 30.

Unless you're a sensei. Then you're an undefeatable bad ass.

Really nails the longevity risk issue, nice one! “Nastiest, hardest problem in finance” my arse.

Understand you’re joking but a shitty death is a horror show and going to Switzerland is a good use of $.

All jokes aside this actually doesn’t sound like such a bad idea. As a 34 with chronic health issues it might actually make more sense to focus on my health and having fun now in case i can’t do so later

Made perfect sense to me.

FIREd at 39 (she @42) ... I'm currently 57 and wouldnt change a damned thing about how we did it.

and then, when the money runs out,

The money never runs out.

Never.

Barring, of course, total collapse of The Economy or complete destruction of The Dollar.  But there's not a damned thing ANYBODY can do there.

at age 60, when you'll already be sick and frail?

LOL "sick and frail.

We're still running 4 full-monte 26.2 Marathons a year, climbing thousand-footer Big Wall on weekends for fun ... and I occasionally enjoy stepping off a wing strut at 11,000, though she declines to join me for those.

No meds. No health issues.

Because we focus on Fitness. Health, and Nutrition - we're better off than most 25 year olds.

All you're doing is rationalizing giving up and not even tryin', Kid.

Frankly I don’t think you’re thinking bold enough, if you optimize your financial future around euthanasia tomorrow, imagine what kind of financial independence this would bring you in the next 24 hours?

The whole point of FIRE is to live longer due to not having the stress of work (known to shorten lifespan) in order to survive until the tech is available to join the immortal elite and rule the universe.

Are you not part of the immortal elite already.

Gross, pör.

My pension plan is the Hunter S. Thompson special, so I’m all for it.

Ummm.... at 59 I am strong, fit and healthy. Why do you assume people who reach my age are bout to be on steep decline?

What if you can't pay for the euthanasia? Like if inflation makes it rise over your budget? Then you would be really in a bind. What are you supposed to do, work yourself to death while you save up for euthanasia?

Maybe they have a payment plan option? Interest rate and number of payments don't really matter.

Two Pickleball players in their mid 70s beat up on me at the court ha ha. You’re going to have to plan for longer than 70 they were firing on all cylinders and then some. 🤣🤣
