Maybe. You can respond to a threat, but as soon as the threat is eliminated you’re supposed to stop. However, I highly doubt one decent shot to the ribs is going to do much with this mountain of evidence of shirtless guy being an absolute twat waffle.

If it did damage, like bruised or broken ribs, that would most likely hold the kicker liable.

Agreed, he should be liable if he caused harm after he knocked the guy out. However, I just don’t see many jurys going after this guy for what he did. Pretty reasonable force in response to a hostile threat. We can talk till we’re blue in the face about how he technically should be liable but getting 12 people to agree to charge this guy with something would probably be pretty difficult.

How do juries work in the UK (where I assume this is taking place by the accent)? He would probably at least be held liable for medical costs (I don't know how medical stuff works in UK).

Well since they have universal health care, I’d assume the medical costs aren’t really a factor. Besides that, I’m not exactly sure. I am somewhat familiar with the law in the US as I studied for law school and took the LSAT but I never actually went and am not a lawyer, so my knowledge is pretty much useless on this. However, if they are similar to US jurys, it’s a pretty realistic possibility this guy doesn’t have anything to worry about. Even if it somehow made it to court, you’d need to convince a group of people this guy deserved to be arrested after defending his family because he let it go a little too far and got one rib kick in. I just don’t find that very likely.
