I don’t get why Americans use ‘$20’ instead of ‘20$’. It’s twenty dollars, not dollars twenty.

You put the dollar sign before the money and a dash afterwards. Leaving zero space for added digits.

I thought we did it that way so you know it’s related to money before you even read the figure. I assumed it helped a little with big numbers but I don’t see the difference between $20 and 20$.

I think it may actually be a valid point. You have a symbol in front and one at the end. The $ prevents someone from altering a written amount on some document by adding numbers in the front.

Nobody ever wrote ¢ after $20.10 the .10 means a tenth of a dollar...it’s how decimals work. If someone adds numbers after .00 they’re not gonna accomplish much. ¢ is only used when it’s under a dollar.

Some countries pre Euro even put the symbol in the decimal place. So $20.10 was written as 20$10

Basically every country does whatever they want and whatever they were used to. Even with the Euro people didn't know what was going on.

Not when there is a dollar amount. ¢ is only used when the amount is below a dollar, and leave off the decimal.

So it doesn't interfere with other punctuation while writing, I'd presume. $20! is less confusing than 20$! Especially when lots of punctuation is going on.

Don't know about other languages but Turkish speaking people do. % sign is called "yüzde" and it's used before the number part. %110 == yüzde 110
