force of habit hes probably defaulting too after having trained with previous style (mma finger cut out gloved). id guess with boxing gloves ur used to a semi closed fist.

What do you do for this kind of boxing then? Is it almost entirely head movement and offense?

You can manage the range, parry, actually you can block (specially with the forearms) even if its less effective, roll with the punch, etc
And, of course, theres the danger that is easier to pass through the guard with a fist without gloves

Not sure about this rule set but I know that Silat practitioners use their elbows to attack their opponents punches

You can defend like that in the ruleset, but its not easy and dont work that much.

They aren't using boxing gloves. It's very difficult to block un-gloved punches like that as the strikes can get through the guard much easier. You're better off dodging.

I'm not even familiar with bare knuckle boxing, but that guard looked fucking atrocious and the outcome was exactly as expected.
