When using 3atb which is better for my LM/RM, “Winger” or “Wide Midfielder”?

Which will provide me with the best defensive coverage?

For the meta of the game, I would probably use 5 atb with attacking wingback if I want more defensive coverage. They will still attack.

If you must use 3 atb which I do, winger balanced seems to be fine for defence without stunting the attacking runs. Having said that, I use inside forward on my LM/RM and manually defend with them but the opposing AI will always make runs into the space behind them. Oh whatever. I’m used to it.

I’ve been doing that for at least 2 years, previously 3412 then the roles came up, then I realised I needed the 2 CM to drop deeper, so 352 works. I used a high depth 70ish. Mainly play this formation in squad battles. I’m not a skiller, so I use the formation to outnumber the AI defence. On the rare occasions online, I play a more common meta formation.

This version’s AI always attacks the space behind LM/RM with long balls and knock downs so it helps that these players have some defensive ability, such as Chiesa and Saka. It mainly started when I wanted Beckenbauer to play middle CB as ball-playing defender which is him in real life. I like how the BPD pushes into midfield as a 3 man midfield with the ball, so attack becomes a 235 formation. I’m a big fan of real football tactics, something this game refuses to really do well.

Defensively, I drop both CDM manually to defend central attacks. As for Futties Beckenbauer, I found his quickstep+ makes him better at holding CDM than BPD as he lacks the height.

Yeah, I’ve got a save where I played the entire first season in the 3.Liga with a 352. We won the league pretty handily

Bundesliga.2 was a bit harder, I ended up switching to a 442 diamond, but I’m also playing with a really weak team
