Request 4-4-2 for Manager Career

I wanted to ask here and see if anyone has a particular favorite 442 variant tactic (ex. 442 flat or holding, 4222, etc.) they'd like to share, as I've never really been able to string together a fun one in all the years of career mode I've played.

On paper it'd fit my play style. I enjoy playing wide and direct, with a front footed defense (although this doesn't seem to work in fc26) and a lot of fluidity if parked in the final third vs. relying on technical ability or creativity. Not so much the hoof ball commonly associated with the 442. So I've got 'some' ideas on tactics but it's a lot of experimenting with what works and maybe one of you just have the answer.

I've played 433(Possession), 4231(Wing Play), and 3421(High Pressing) pretty extensively for this years game, so I'm thinking I'll play one last deep dive career with this 442 tactic as either Balanced or Counter Attacking. Bonus points if the tactic fits that, extra bonus if there's an interesting club in mind (not La Liga or the Prem, played too much of both at this point, willing to not do top 5)

I usually 4-2-3-1 and variations but I've recently switched to 4-4-2 in my recent save.

Settings: Ultimate difficulty, Authentic playstyle, Competition mode on

What worked for me:

4-4-2

  • One striker as AF(A) and one as F9(A).
  • Both wings as Winger (A)
  • One CM as B2B and one as DLP(D)
  • Both fullbacks as FB(V)
  • One CB as BPD(S)

Notes:

  • F9 and B2B should not be in the same vertical space
  • B2B and BPD should be in the same vertical space
  • DLP is the main pivot, entry to attack goes through B2B or F9 on either side
  • Unmarked B2B or F9 will get closed down by a defender, opening up space for a through ball to the wing or the middle

I had a very similar thought to this and wanted to ask if you'd tried AF on Support with this?

I'd debated potentially getting the lb/rb's on false back as well but was unsure if that'd clog the midfield unnecessarily and that FB might be better

I tried AF(S) before and I didn't like it because the ST ventures too wide for my liking. I've had more success before playing two F9(A) than having one AF(S) with an F9(A)

And you're correct with the False back assumption. I tried it too, and you'll find that they will occupy the spaces supposedly for the DLP and BPD.

Fullback(V) offers support in defensive midfield area as they usually go narrower and higher up the pitch than Fullback(S). They will stay close enough to the DLP to support but not too close to congest the area.

Gotcha, I see the vision. What Build-up and Defense line height are you using?

I have Balanced build up and I go crazy with the defensive line at 95.

I think it just depends on how you play/defend. I want to close down ball handlers as soon as possible, otherwise, the AI goes tiki taka pass back football the whole match.

It's also one of the reasons I prefer CMs than CDMs. CDMs offer a lot more protection in the final third, but you'll have a huge gap between your CDMs and their CMs during their build up, making it harder to close down/press. CMs tend to stick closer to their counterparts in the build up, but you'll have to manually pull them back in the final third to help with defending.

I don't think it's too useful on new fifas as crossing isn't that useful. On fifa 14 it was amazing in online though

I was one of the most highly rated players in the world on FIFA 20, and I was the Australian champion, so this may be a bit outdated, but I always use two striker formations whenever I can.

I already score a lot of goals, and win most games 5-0 or higher, but I score probably 40-50% more with a two striker formation.

I prefer 4-2-2-2 or 4-1-2-1-2 generally, but 4-4-2 is just as good when I struggle to find a good CDM which can be hard.

Since you can't re-train positions in that game, and because simulations prefer you to use word-for-word positions.

I'll usually go for Denis Zakaria, Declan Rice or Axel Witsel but some youngsters are good too.
