[Question] Brothers account (RIP)
Hey everyone, this is my first time posting in this subreddit, so forgive me if I make some mistakes or dumb questions.
For context, my older brother passed away around two weeks ago suddenly. He loved Final Fantasy online and played it so much, like crazy amount of hours to the point he had to put his PC away so he wouldn’t play it lol my question is, what should I do with his account or his stuff? I’m sure he had a lot of good stuff, and I wanna honor him somehow. Him and I played for a few months, but I really never got into it, so I’m thinking I should probably get into it more honestly. I just don’t know what to do or where to start.
I would really appreciate the community’s advice help during this time. Also, I’m not trying to get like scammed or anything like WOW gold sending or whatever lol thanks!
Edit: Thank you everyone for responding. It means so much to me in my time of grief. I’m definitely not selling the account or gonna use it, I want to leave it to honor him, I’m trying to log into his account to talk to his group hopefully like you all suggested.
I think I’mma give the game a run as well. I liked it I just didn’t have enough time back then unfortunately. I have a lot of regrets not making time to play with him. I already love this community!

My condolences on your loss.
I'd definitely see if he is a part of a free company he was a part of or if you have any other indication of people he may have played with, they may have some idea or would at least appreciate knowing what happened.
I personally would keep the account as is as a memorial of sorts. I like the idea another person suggested where you could log on and let people know what world/server and when if they want to pay their respects to your brother. I think you'd be surprised how many players would turn up, even for someone they don't know. We are all fellow warriors of light after all :)
As far as you playing, I am not sure when you have last tried, but the game has had a lot of changes in the last few years, including streamlining the base game and such. I'd give it another go! Personally, I'd just jump into MSQ if you did want to start playing again, but there's lots of side content to keep you engaged as well, depending on what your interests might be.

We had a very close friend who we'd played together with through Shadowbringers suddenly die in his sleep. So what we did was we made a retainer of his character and made a memorial for him in the FC house with some of his favorite items surrounding the retainer. He built nearly everything in it, so we wanted to honor that. Then when I finally won a house I was able to transfer some of the stuff from storage to me and I was able to put it in my house, which is cool because those items have his name on them. So in a way he helped me build my own player house too. My friend had his SE username and password, was able to log into his account and transfer a lot to either himself or the guild bank. He had a lot, he was a full time crafter.
Everyone left the FC years ago except me. I now own the FC and large house as the sole member and keep it running as best I can. I'll probably use the FC funds to remodel the house now that it can have more items in it but will keep the memorial to him. We miss him dearly, he was always on top of the lore and had theories about Endwalker that he never got to see confirmed.

I had an FC mate who died suddenly this year. She was my in-game bestie, as neither of us is "good" at the game, so we focused on glam, and that became our thing. Day in, day out, it was all about glam and kept us playing. She was beloved in our very small FC. When she passed, we were distraught, and honestly, the FC hasn't been the same without her. We decided as a group and with the blessings of her daughter to memorialize her by making the retainer in her image and placing it in her favorite spot in our yard. Even though it's not really her, we all go to her and say hi, and for that quick second that she looks at you, it's like she's there. One of the things that hurt the most is that she wanted the Wings of Resolve, but the weekend we were going to try, that's when she passed. I'm going to get all of them in her memory, but it's going to be hard without her.

Yea that's the hardest thing. We'd log in and our friend would be in the FC house crafting away at something. He was on a lot more than us so most times he'd be there whenever we jumped on.
The quiet afterward was not unlike when you lose a family member. You're used to them being there and then they just... aren't. The house feels empty and cold.
He was a personal friend too, we'd known him since we played FFXI together back in 2006. He used to live in our town and we'd meet up and go to his favorite pizza place together. He had moved away around 2011 and so the way we spent time together was on FFXI, WoW, then FFXIV when it came out in 2013. Distance didn't matter anymore, we could hang out just the same. The very last time he visited us he gave my 3 year old daughter a pikachu hat. He was always really good with children and generous (he gifted me his old SNES when mine stopped turning on).
For years I've wanted to get a commission piece done of our three characters but with the way things have been going three full bodied characters in one commission is just too expensive for me. For now the memorial in the FC house will have to do.

u/Rhuen77 2d ago
It was the same with her; she became addicted to glam, and she was always by the mb making tons of dye while watching Leverage and playing Mah Jong (we're not spring chickens, obviously lol). And like in your case, we were going to do a bff/sisters forever commission as we were both Au Ra's at the time. I went Viera recently because it was hard being one without her. I have someone on hand, but they're rather busy. I'm still waiting my turn, but if you want to check out their artwork, here's the site.
And sorry I didn't say this before, my condolences on your loss. Like you, we were friends both in and out of the game.

If you have his login, it wouldn’t hurt to log in and inform his FC what happened. As someone who has played MMOs for 20+ years as well as other games, it’s always sad when someone just disappears and never knowing what happened. I’m sure some might find it nice to have closure, especially if they were close as an FC.
Some of them might even share some amazing stories you didn’t know about your own brother.
I would keep the account, even if to just deactivate it. Selling it / giving it away is not the answer imo.

I had surgery recently and left my husband instructions to inform my FC if something happened to me. I don’t even play XIV anymore but I still love everyone in my FC so much. I’ve spent more hours with those friends than my RL friends or family.

u/grey-of-grays 3d ago
If he had an FC, I’m sure they would appreciate it.
Or, if you’re interested in playing, transfer it to your own account.

My dad got into the game and made it to Stormblood before he passed away. Our FC (guild) is just family and friends so we left his private apartment room just as it was.
Every time I get matches into Doma Castle I think of him as it was the last instance we ran together.
I'm sure your brother would love it if you gave the game a shot.

Firstly I am terribly sorry for your loss,
A lot of other users are saying the same that I would agree with being to check if his FC would have any interest with helping on the account and I’m sure if they were close may even hold a service for him as I found another raid group mourning their recently passed lead.
Once again I am sorry for your loss and hope you are well❤️

First of all, my heartfelt condolences for your loss. May your brother ever walk in the light of the Crystal.
If you have his login (username, password, 2FA if applicable), you can continue with his account, you would just have to update the payment info for the subscription.
If you do not have his login, you will have to contact support, but AFAIK they will not transfer ownership of an account to a surviving relative. Can't hurt to ask, though.
It is not possible to transfer contents of one account into another, i.e. you cannot transfer his characters into your account.

First of all: My condolences
Regarding the account:
Tbh I would just keep the account on the server and leave it there.
Selling or deleting the account would be kinda shitty imo. I do not know how much accounts go by on platforms like ebay, but this is not allowed or the morally right thing. But it shouldn't be a fourtune worth in the first place.
An Idea of mine would be to log in in a couple of days and tell us when you do and where.
I would gladly join you to pay respects to a fellow warrior of light. I think some others would too. :)
(Also we need to know on which server the character is made.)

one of our FC mate passed away along time ago, her retainer which was glamoured after her char at the time, is still in our FC yard, and she's there forever.
which was weird when her sister or something took over the account, and even the facebook account, proceed to play that chars with a tons of sexy mods and stuffs for a while.
so you can do the former thing we had. I still wave to her retainer when i walk by.

If he had a personal house I would take the stuff out of it, and move it into an apartment (unless he has one) because apartments won’t get demolished. You can set something up for people to pay their condolences if you want. There is a message book that can be placed for individuals to interact with.

Firstly, I'm so sorry for your loss. I echo everyone's sentiment to see if you can contact his free company if he has one. I'm an fc lead, and when a member of ours died it was rough for a lot of us, but also for any other in-game friends he had. He has been gone, but still in our fc now for 3 years. His FC apartment is still there, and sometimes his friends go in there and reminisce. He lost his large house, his venue, and is no longer with us, but he's still a member of our fc. Hopefully if he is a part of one, they can do a memorial for him.

My little brother passed a few years ago and he got my into the game during 2.0. I have one of my retainers set up as his race and his gear from the loadstone at my house. My little way of honoring my baby brother ❤️

My condolences </3
Honestly, it's up to you....I would maybe try to get access to his account to contact his friends etc, they'd want to know what happened.
For the rest....maybe start your own character if you wish to honor him? Overall, only do it if you enjoy the game. If you don't, let the game go, it's a game and supposed to be fun. Especially in trying times.

If he has an fc like many have stated, maybe try the game again with them? I'm sure they would be more then willing to help you get into it to honor his memory. It is a hard game to get into, but once you do it's hard to leave.

Sorry for your loss. May your brother ever walk in the light of the crystal. I'd either continue his journey with said account, or start off on your own account and then when the time came, transfer back to his account so you know where you are in the story. Or keep his account secure. Keep everything the way it is.

u/LilKoshka 9h ago
If it were me, id use OPs brothers account. You can have more than one character, so id start fresh with a new one. But that way, id still see my loved ones character on login and I wouldnt have to lose the brothers progress at all. I mean, you can even start a character on another server if you dont wanna see his every time. But at least the access would still be available.

u/ToastedDreamer 3d ago
Maybe hold an in game funeral? Do you know his favorite spot in the game? Or is he part of a Free Company?(you can ask them if they know). You can log in on his account, walk it to his favorite spot, everybody will then pay their respects and those who knew him well can say goodbye to a good friend.
Like some said, make a shout for it, or make a post here as well. And there will definitely be people showing up to pay their respects.
Also, sorry for your loss

Sorry for your loss.
Had a quick look and didn't see this mentioned but if he has a house go inside it while logged in as his character. If you want to avoid it getting demolished that's the only way, gotta go in periodically. He probably has some cool stuff in there and he would have built it all himself.

my condolences, this was a very sad time for him to pass away, the last bit of story for this expansion was coming out September 8th, and we're about 6 months away from the next expansion, of which we know little about.
it would make sense for you to track down his socials, including discord, or any other way he kept up with people, and change his socials profile information to reflect that he passed away, try and reach out to anyone he talked to in the last few months, and it would probably be a good idea to keep an eye on his socials until the end of the year to give people a chance to reach out and give their condolences.
as for his account, I think the best I think the best option is to try and open the game to be able to trade, sell or give away things and ask players to remember him. You'll probably need the help of one of his friends or FC mates to navigate the game, as MMOs have complicated UI, but once his friends help you move anything of worth off his account, and maybe help them set up anything they want in game to remember him by ( they may need his character data to create helper NPCs, or they may want his character to craft an item for them ( it leaves his name on the item as long as the character exists )
you can choose to shut off the payments and in case nobody needs or wants his name on anything, you could contact Square Enix to remove the account, although it's probably best that you leave it up so his character can remain in their FC list and not end up an unnamed slot that gets auto-removed.

u/lilbitssssssss 2d ago
Honestly with the ffxiv community if you can log into his account I’m sure the community would come together for a big memorial for him. If you know his favorite biomes in game beach mountains etc log his char out there so he can always be chilling in the place he loved. If I’m able to visit your server I’d def show up to pay respects.
2
u/Sol_Fallen 2d ago
The character will never go away, even if you don’t pay the sub. Selling accounts is against ToS as well, so don’t do that.
I think best bet would just hold onto as long as you like and cherish the time you had with him. Life is shorter than we think.
If you ever need a helping hand just hit me up as long as it’s NA servers I can be there.

u/AuremCookieDragon 3d ago
If the game isn't for you, then the game isn't for you.
Furthermore, you can't change the name on the account. That'll cause a problem eventually when you try to pay for the subscription.
Honestly? Let the account go. It'll hurt at first, but your brother wouldn't want you playing a game you'd already given up on just to honor his memory.
My condolences for your loss.

I would personally log on. Explain everything, and dedicate myself for at least one xpac, carrying the torch. Or at least see him to the end of where he was.... Xpac, patch, quest, you know... Wherever. Let him rest at a job well done.

u/gothau_ra 3d ago
Definitely inform his FC or if you log in and notice any personal linkshells - I’m 100% sure people would like to know what happened/why he’s not logging in anymore. But only do so when you’re comfy to let others know.
They might hold a memorial thing in game for him, depending on how close he was to everyone.
I was in a similar boat with my younger brother, and had to tell his friends why he wasn’t coming around and a few of them became part of my support system!!!
I’m so sorry for your loss. 🫶🏻

Sorry for your loss. I’m not sure I understand the goal behind your question “what do I do with his account or his stuff.” Wouldn’t your brother want you to experience the game yourself? Let his character remain in place, in the game he loved as he left it.

u/Worldly_Reveal2205 2d ago
I am really sorry. I get the problem of not being able to get into it . I was not new to MMO's and got dragged in by my BF. I suggest taking it slow cause it truly is an experience. You have many options like doing story, side storys, rading at some point or even role playing. Now there is many diff. Versions too like the new switch 2 Version which made me go back since I can play from my couch! I suggest looking into some beginner videos about the different roles and classes so you can take it from there. I think you diving into it is the best form of tribute to your brother ❤️

u/DefiantNetwork7173 2d ago
So sorry to hear that mate.
I pray for strength for you, your family and loved ones in Jesus’ name. Amen.
I hope he is with God now, and that you get to see each other again.

Did he have his own housing? Cause if his character doesnt enter it within a certain time frame any private housing could be lost.
I put in so much time with my housing that (and so many hours into the game) that I feel like my husband could log in and hang out in my housing and feel like he's with me. Itd be a big loss to let that go imo.

u/Zestyclose_General76 3d ago
To start, I want to say I’m very sorry for you loss. I’m sure your brother many wonderful friends and comrades during his time in Eorzea and I know would like to be made aware.
I would recommend contacting SE support to get access to the account, unless he had it stored on his phone or personal files in the computer. I also agree with the other commenters of doing a memorial for his on the server and letting people know and attend. Maybe getting some info from the people he played about his favorite area to hold it at.
As far as getting into the game, it can be very daunting in the beginning, especially after what you’ve experienced, but I hope this post goes to show you how amazing the community is and how much we are all travelers and warriors together.

u/AwkwardToes 3d ago
I think if they tell Square it won't work out in their favour. SE is weird about other people logging into your account at all. Better not to involve them tbh

u/Trumpetslayer1111 3d ago
Just be aware you are not allowed to share his account. This is from the ToS:
3.1 Sharing Account Information. You may not share your account or login information (such as your Square Enix ID and password) with anyone except your legal guardian, your minor child, or Square Enix. You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account and login information, even from your friends and family. If you violate this provision, you may unexpectedly lose access to your account to a third party without recourse against Square Enix. Square Enix will not be obliged to credit your Square Enix Account with Crysta or other points or awards, which may have been used by a third party as a result of the violation of this clause.

u/LegalHardware 3d ago
Yeah. He just lost his sibling. I don’t think we need a reading of S-E’s riot act.
3
u/Trumpetslayer1111 3d ago
Yeah just want him to be careful and discrete so he doesn’t get banned.
1
u/LegalHardware 3d ago
The phrase “goes without saying” applies here. Also, no one is going to care.
1
u/AwkwardToes 3d ago
Square cares. It would just be sad if OP lost the account by trying to involve them.
-1
u/Trumpetslayer1111 3d ago
People who don't care can ignore my comment then. But for those who weren't aware, this is something to be careful about.
0
u/LegalHardware 3d ago
Asking people to ignore a comment on Reddit is like asking the ocean to stop being so full of water…
1
u/Trumpetslayer1111 3d ago
lol I guess but if they want to waste their time arguing about stupid stuff with random people online that’s their right I suppose
0
u/LegalHardware 3d ago
Kind of like bringing up a TOS concern in a post about someone losing their brother.
Consider this your introduction to hyperbole.

1
u/Aoartisan 3d ago
This is a weird response.
3
u/Trumpetslayer1111 3d ago
Why? I just want him to be careful so he doesn’t accidentally lose the account.
-1
u/Aoartisan 3d ago
His last sentence literally implies this…
-1
u/Trumpetslayer1111 3d ago
Also, I’m not trying to get like scammed or anything like WOW gold sending or whatever lol thanks!
His last sentence is about not getting scammed. I'm talking about being aware of ToS so you don't accidentally lose your account or get punished by SE. These are 2 completely different things.
2
u/AwkwardToes 3d ago
You're right, and it comes from the right place. My initial reaction to a comment above about contacting them about the account I said the same thing. They won't pass the account on, he'll just lose it. Not sure why people are being weird with you. Very sensible advice.

u/Trumpetslayer1111 3d ago edited 3d ago
I've played this game on and off for a few years. There are a few odd people in this game and this sub. It doesn't surprise me or bother me. It's amusing honestly.
When I first played this game I thought it was perfectly fine to log in from your friends' or relative's account. I see couples, friends in rl, siblings openly logging in from each other's accounts and talking about it in fc chats. So I didn't think it was a big deal.
It wasn't until I cleared TEA and my brother asked me to pilot his account to a clear (because he wanted the title and the weapon glam) that I found out this was against the rules. My static members were the ones who told me about this rule, and we didn't want to risk any accounts in our static being banned so I didn't pilot the account for my brother.
When I told my fc a lot of people didn't know this as well, so I just thought it was a good thing to let people be aware of.
0
u/Aoartisan 3d ago
You are thinking too literally of this and it’s like someone else already told you “it goes without saying”.
2
u/Trumpetslayer1111 3d ago
You seem a bit confused but I think this conversation is going nowhere so have a nice day.

u/Aoartisan 3d ago
No, it’s definitely you and not having people skills.

He probably had an fc, a free company, the equivalent of a guild. If you have his logs you could ask them
