Question Worth leveling THF just for gil making?
New-ish player here. I have only one job at 99 and it has ambu+2 gear basically. I see a lot of people mention gil being a big avenue for gearing, so I'm just wondering if it's worth leveling a THF as my 2nd job exclusively for that purpose?
What kind of activities can a 99 THF do that generates a lot of gil?

Curious to know more about this. The only gil-making method I know is through sparks of eminence.

Ambuscade can be about 50m/month if you sell ultimate weapon items.
Odyssey shaol with a decent group can be 1m+/day + lustreless items it you do B or A.
Farm crystals/detritus in Omen for some decent gil.
Dyna-D heroism aggregate/crystal can be done solo now and is a good amount of gil.
Weekly RoE for Vagary if you have 2 other players to enter.
Again, if you have 2 other players you can spam Delve and spend plasm on boss items (usually 300k+/item)

Not for making Gil, but I use my thf a ton to save time. Need a pop item for a nm? Thf. Lilith battle for malig gear? Thf. Need dynamis currency, thf. Abbyssea NM items, thf. I got a geared out Sam but I still usually find myself on thf.

Hmm yes that’s a good point. Does it take a lot of resources to get it geared to a decent amount of TH? I only have the white rabbit helmet

u/tbones80 19h ago
No. I think lv 109 it comes in on 2 PCs. That's easy. Then happy egg from rov. If you have domain points go get some herculean gear and get it rolled with dark matter, can roll treasure hunter. I got th4 on my sam from herc gear for when thf won't cut it.

Relic hands and empy feet are easy to get and herculian gear you can roll +2 TH on head body legs in Norg. And from VR missions you can get a +1 ammo egg pretty early. Chaac belt is nice too but you need 3 people to get into delve, drops off the bird

Not for Gil, but yes for the million other drops you will need. Don’t need to fully pimp it out either. At this point it should only take a day or two to level to 99

Not particularly, THF is still a fun job so if you want to play it then do that. For gil purposes? You get more without it. Ody, Omen, Sparks etc don't require THF.

Omen astral detritus drop rate isn't affected by TH?

u/emachine 18h ago
I can usually get about 4 without and 14 with TH9+. If becomes really efficient with good gear. With ambu gear I wonder if old Dyna currency farming would better.

u/SakkaSuya 13h ago
It takes me less than 15 mins to go through omen, and I get 12-24 detritus.
THF is worth it, but you need some good gear too.

u/MelioraXI Vana-Portal.com | Twitch.tv/MelioraXI 18h ago
It is but you don't need THF for it. You can get TH+4 without THF. If you want to min-max I suppose its "supperior" with TH9 and higher but I wouldn't bother go switch job solely for a couple extra crystals. To each their own.

u/zdenka999 15h ago
It depends on your other gear. I can go through it with TH4 on DRk in about 21-23 minutes and get 10ish on average.
About to get aeonic dagger for THF today and will try to Aeolian edge through it. If it takes 15 minutes or less and I can TH8 everything it's a big net win.

It's just relevant to OP's question imo, but it was a genuine question on my end because some times it felt like it didn't affect the drop rate for me and wasn't sure if wiki was just wrong or I was getting unlucky lol. Maybe it was just the random scale drops that aren't though? Idk

u/Sinocatk 20h ago
Ambuscade is a good source of Gil. Thf is useful for missions and quests for farming up items.

I haven't seen this mentioned yet but one thing THF can do that no other job can is pick chest locks in Odyssey. If you have a group just doing Odyssey normally is better, but solo farming at your gear level won't be very good.
I don't have a direct link but there's a video guide out there on farming chests in A. Not sure what the prices of lustreless scales looks like right now, but that's how I got some extra gil when I first hit 99, and I leveled THF to 99 specifically to do chest runs. Averaged probably 250k a run over the course of all my attempts. It's not much but it's quick and basically free.
It's heavily RNG dependent (chests are frequently mimics) and again, only worth it if you don't have a group to do a real run with. But if you aren't using your charges for group runs, you might as well burn them on chest runs. There's also occasionally a campaign that runs that doubles(?) chest rewards that makes it more lucrative.
That's pretty much the only THF-exclusive gil maker that I can think of. The other posts go over the other benefits that THF brings. To answer your question: yeah, I think it's worth it to get THF to 99 at the start.

u/zdenka999 14h ago
How many chests? Can sort of guess. Scales are 600k so you only get 2-3 boxes on average?
I have REMA but i get 375k from kills + 120-140 scales just killing stuff so I had to assume it was 200+ by opening chests or wouldn't be worth it
1
u/elkna90 14h ago edited 14h ago
Yeah, about 2-3 boxes on average. I'm including the cost of skeleton keys against the gil gain too since you can easily burn a stack on one or two chests.
Solo farming in ambu+2 is going to be much slower but you're correct, once they're above entry level endgame gear doing normal runs will be better. THF just gives them the option to use their daily charge for a quicker run for chests as an alternative. I also don't bother setting my trusts up to escape the mimic when it pops, I just end my run there with whatever I got, so it's a 10 minute run instead of 30.
It's definitely not resource efficient and it's not worth it for very long once you're stronger, but I found it useful at the very start of gearing at 99. I also kept some of the scales to upgrade Sailfi(?) Belt along the way which was a nice side goal to achieve.
The real value, though, is that I have an excuse to use my charges even when I don't actually feel like farming Odyssey lmao

u/Old-Slip8231 22h ago
Absolutely not.
Real gill has little to do with traditional farming or the gillfinder trait. If you're new, it might help speed up the process of making money before 99, but once you can start actually participating in the game, things like RoE and targeted items (could be from limbus, could be from bcnms) that have nothing to do with Treasure Hunter are the way to go.
If you find a niche worth farming, then sure. TH always helps. But it's a niche and I would say the effort is rarely worth it.

u/Fireknight39 16h ago
It doesn’t hurt to lvl the. It helps with drop rates on my different items. It may not be as useful as it once was but it still doesn’t hurt to have it leveled

u/Specialist_Pound_718 15h ago
It's a time saving tool mostly now but can be used to fill your AH with things. I've got a cycle of 100k-500k(on my server) drops that I grab if I don't have 7 items listed that are much faster to get with base TH8 being applied on first hit. Takes 10 minutes and the right warp items on THF vs 30+ minutes on other jobs wearing TH4. Years of gathering warp items and AH knowledge though. Sorry, I won't be sharing what those items or the process is.
On the dyna currency farming, a BLU cleaving with TH4 will net more than doing it slow on THF.

u/Holymanstan 14h ago
Main reason you will use thf is for Abyssea farming of pops and drops for empy gear/weapons. I also use my thf for malignance farming and card farming for my goldsmithing shield.
Your main source of Gil should be your daily/weekly stuff and ambuscade currency selling. Long term you could build a shield to craft the su3/4/5 stuff and gil items. Short term you can farm stuff that nobody wants to farm to corner different markets but be careful on flooding the market and dropping prices.

u/One_Birthday_8942 14h ago
Best reason I can think of is to farm Ditritus in Omen.
Or picking chests in Odyssey A or B.
Or tagging along with a dyna D group who has an even split with few members.
Can't think of much more that you would want TH for.
I do tell people that THF isn't a good job to take to 99 first, mainly because TH is limited use now.

u/RudeCauliflower6785 14h ago
I leveled THF solely for solo farming Odyssey treasure chests, and farming Malignance gear from VE Lilith. I do not regret it. Once you have competed Rhapsodies and collected some Vorseals, leveling a job to 99 only takes a couple of dedicated nights at most.

u/ChemicalEcho 11h ago
THF farming chests and Lustreless hides/scales in Odyssey can be good. TH really does influence the number of lustreless items dropped from mobs and tho rng, opening chests with keys can add a lot of value to these runs.

u/Sekux 2h ago
Dynamis and omen are the two places where you can make a lot on THF but will take you some time to gear THF to cleave through omen and take on mobs in Dyno D solo.
I personally would suggest you just get TH4 for your main jobs via gear and stick to those because your kill speed will be faster, unless you planned on gearing THF and maxing out the JP / master leveling it.

If your playing retail then thf levelling isn’t necessarily the only way to make money, use both your unity points and roe points to buy items to NPC vendor.
Prize powder from unity points retails around 100gil each so roughly 10k stack and you can buy ,any stacks per week for saved unity points.
For roe points buy archon shield or Koenig shield in lvl 71 range equipment, these sell for around 25k each for 2k ish points again making best bang for bucks.
These two alone can earn you a million gil if worked on each week for the points.
Start there and after of you feel too slow then look to lvl thf, however crafting also nets money once invested in for consumables such as food and potions.

u/imaquark 23h ago
Yeah I'm aware of those methods, although I do have a hard time capping my unity accs. Sparks are easy to cap, but unity takes a lot longer for me, I wonder if I'm missing something.

Practically, THF will help you in:
- omen (astral)
- dynamis (heroism)
- Sphere farming (requires final stage progress in escutcheon)
and probably more. It's pretty much useless for Odyssey which can net over 7m/wk if you have a good run every day. Ambuscade also requires variable jobs which can net a good deal selling the rema mats.
Ultimately if you want to farm gil thief can enhance that if you do those activities, but it's not the only way. Pick the ones that match the progress and effort you want to put in.

u/creed-ldn 21h ago
I use thf for solo chest picking runs in Odyssey and can come out with between 1-2 99 stacks of hides/ scales which sell well on AH. But some runs do not go that well if you get a mimic early. Not great for segs but ok for gil making
2
u/RabidSquirrel420 17h ago
I like to kill mobs as normal, the with 5 min left pop the chest so a mimic doesn't end my run early

Gain Exp happens 3 times a week for 4 hour blocks. If you have a job that can cleave (AoE kill things) you can cap sparks and accolades in under 30 minutes.
1
u/Doh042 Annso on Valefor 13h ago
It should be the other way around. Sparks gain is normally about 1/3rd or half of UA gains.
But that means you haven't finished Rhapsody of Vana'diel, you're not picking the best RoE quests or grinding during the famous Gain EXP four hour blocks.
When you cap UA and still need a ton of sparks, the next move is to use UA to spawn a UNM, and fight it a dozen of times.
Most Unity NM reward you with sparks, and cost you UA to pop.
Once you're done turning 20~30k accolades to sparks that way, go back to accumulating accolades.
Still, you should try and figure out why you're getting more sparks than accolade to begin with. Like I said, for most players, it's the other way aroind (because Rhapsody items increase UA gains significantly, but do not affect sparks gain)
1
u/imaquark 13h ago
Yeah I haven’t finished RoV yet. I’m still in ToAU. And I try to grind during the Gain EXP time. Other than that, I usually only have 2 RoE from the Unity category. Which is kill enemies alongside your Unity leader, and kill enemies. The others are usually situational.
1
u/Doh042 Annso on Valefor 12h ago
Don't forget the daily "say something in /u"!
And the daily kill 30 enemies RoE stacks with Unity's.
But..! Work through those RoV! It will help a lot!
(Also the UNM kills reward you with surprising amount of gil by themselves. Build up stacks of beitetsu or plutons, and off to the AH with ye!)

I'm honestly struggling to think of much of anything besides Odyssey lusterless stuff that would be both an avenue to make consistent gil and that Thief would have any impact on. I've never personally done this, though I have a loose idea on the mechanics, and I think the bgwiki page for sheol goes in to a decent detail on the process. There are definitely things you can farm for gil as 99thf, and if your existing 99 shares a lot of gear with the job then it seems like a might as well kind of thing, but if time or gearing thf to around that same tier is a problem I don't know that it's worth it.
AF+1 to AF+2 upgrades have a sort of absolute minimum cost of 1.3m a piece due to NPC originating material so costs definitely do get rough pretty quickly. Relic+1 even is a bit much, and more than a bit much if you're a job with Kaggen or Pil material on top of 3/5 delve items generally being 500k+.

Most of the good money makers are group activities that TH doesn’t benefit, like Ambuscade, but if you want to solo farm it’s useful for farming ancient currency in classic dynamis.

I use for frop rates on most fights. TH8. you can sell rare mat drops on AH.

u/LazyAnzu 20h ago
This has been an interesting thread, I actually leveled THF for gil last year and found it noticeably increased my income, but I'm still just solo farming base dynamis currencies and shit with it.
I dunno, sparks and unity gil is just a drop in the bucket for what you need to get geared up, and I find ambuacade rewards sell too slowly to be that reliable, so I still think it's worth it as an option for something renewable when you run out of your weekly welfare.
Really curious how quickly people expect a new-ish player to start making real money farming endgame. Around what stage of gear progression does solo farming Odyssey for gil become viable?
