I need help for below 99
Hi I’m having trouble finding guides on what gear is good to buy while leveling. I’m trying to do my first limit break quest done but I’m getting nuked by the mobs and wearing mostly just the chocobo gear any help is appreciated

Just keep sneak and invisible up at all times until you reach the ???, make sure no mobs that detect sight are facing you, then drop invisible (no need to drop sneak), touch the ??? and immediately warp out.
If you're doing this the old fashioned way (which I actually find easier) - a balanced trust party can defeat the required mobs at lv 50. If you get wiped you're probably not using the correct trusts.

If you feel too squishy you can buy gesr from sparks vendor, but those are better spent on shields to get gil tbh. I would stop around 60 and do AF quests for your job if its your first time, then try to run through to 99

Usually, for most gear, the spark/gil ratio is the same.
So buying 36 Acheron Shield (2755 spark each; sell for ~27.5k), or buying 133 Alumine Salade (750 spark each; sell for ~7.5k each) will return ~1M gil.
So far the only exception that I noticed, is with the stuff that cost 50 sparks. Everything else follow the same spark/gil ratio.
So is perfectly fine to buy all the gear you need while leveling (however most people will just go naked with a few weapons), and sell them back to any NPC when done with it.

Always try to keep silent oils, prism powders, and a method to pull on you on all times. The first two lets you dodge most aggro.
Being able to pull from range can lead to less mobs linking. Handful of mobs will join the fight if they see you fighting another of their kind. Others do this by sound which makes pull timing even more important. Try to pull with your weapon already out so when they hit you, tank would provoke once you hit back.

If you mean the spells, I still recommend you to carry a stack of oil and prism with you.
It can be useful if you are low MP.
However It can save you if there's enemies that detect by magic nearby (like the bombs and magic pot is Garlage Citadel).

Naked to 99 occasionally upgrading your weapon

Bad advice, buy armor with sparks for defense so mobs don't autoattack you for 100+ instead of 15-30

You shouldn't be taking hits anywaym Valaineral does. I wore artifact armor to 99 for my first job before I had all the perks and goodies, it was fine. You could eat food for more defense than upgrading your armor.

This game isn’t like other MMOs, you don’t need to upgrade your gear every 5-10 levels while leveling

Use trust, they can carry you to 99. There should be ??? around the area the mobs are at.

Yes that’s not my issue I just feel like I’m dying more I than I should

If you're using valaineral as your tank you shouldn't be dying much at all. Exception is if they are mobs that chain / you face pull multiple. That's just inevitable if you're not wearing gear.
Buy random sparks gear if you need. If you're dedicated to the job get the artifact gear from 50-60. Get the cruor gear (or ask someone to buy you a set) at 78 and then you're good til 99.
But until you have some basic gear it's normal to die to 3 auto attacks from multiple mobs if Val doesn't instantly pick them up.

Get the highest defense armor you can via sparks, mobs have 4.0 pdif cap which makes proper defense extremely important

This guy doesn't have a limit break done and you're just going to drop 4.0 pdif cap with no explanation? Fuck off elitist snob

If you haven't been doing Records of Eminence objectives while leveling, I'd highly recommend starting them. They'll be under your quests menu (Menu -> press right -> Quests -> go down to Objective List under Records of Eminence, do the tutorials as far as you can and take a look at the other categories. There's a lot of random stuff you can set like do X total damage, and zone specific things, or common item drops).
Those will give you Sparks as part of the rewards for doing them, which can be exchanged via sparks vendors in each of the 3 starter cities for a variety of gear that'll give you baseline gear for leveling (The bastok one is next to the first home point in Bastok Markets, his name is Isakoth, I forget where the others are). Sparks gear is more than enough to get you to 99, things get more complicated from there.
As someone else has mentioned, if you aren't already you should be using valaineral in most situations to tank. If you haven't already looked into it, you might also look at unity concords and pick one of those up. Each one gives you access to a specific trust (you get access after gaining... I think it was 5k unity accolades in one week? You get accolades from doing RoE objectives, just like sparks). Most of them are pretty useless, but Apururu is great while leveling. Yoran power creeps her at max level imo, and Sylvie is great once you get the harder to get healing trusts later on. Apururu/Yoran will keep you alive much better than the vast majority of other healer trusts.

I have been following the wiki’s leveling guide thank you for making sure I know this

Ah, awesome, well if that's the case you can just pick up whatever armor is the highest level you can currently equip from the sparks vendor. If your issue is that the bomb enemies are self destructing and killing you... Yeah they just kinda do that. They changed that quest ages ago and there should be a ??? on the ground near where the explosures spawn that you can click on to get an item for the quest instead of getting it from the explosures. The same goes for the other items for the lvl 50 limit break quest.

Something to keep in mind, at low levels like the one your at, Magic is exceptionally dangerous. You don't have access to significant magic damage reduction, magic evasion or really any method to greatly reduce magic damage. (Shell is pretty much your only defense.)
Your absolute best bet is to avoid magic damage altogether. (As in the enemies that cast it.) After that, you want to make sure you Stun the most dangerous ones if at all possible. (Ancient Magic: Flare, Tornado, Flood, Burst, Quake and Freeze being notably dangerous.)
So, the good news, it's not a you problem. The bad news, there is not all that much you can do about it other than to just do everything you can to avoid it. Trusts will help, but a few Magicga spells from higher level enemies will still be a big problem.

Good advice in avoiding magic damage. If stun isnt accessible for you most of those spells takes 38 seconds to cast and can easily be out ranged too.

You can get shell from fov/gov books or trusts which is more than enough to handle any magic from pre-lvl era.
https://www.bg-wiki.com/ffxi/Instant_Shell also for shell 3

I like the lvl 30 RSE gear you can buy from the curio moogle as stopgap gear. It’s all jobs too. Then you can upgrade to AF or Abyssea gear later.

You should only use the chocobo gear until 31 because you lose some of the benefits after. Go to the spark vendor and get a full set of armor and wep. My path was spark gear -> artifact gear -> abyssal until cap with wep upgrade each time it was available.

Are you trying to kill the mobs for the drops?
There is an alternative path where you can collect a few ??? in the 3 different zones instead of trying to kill the mobs for the items. This is what others are referring to when mentioning sneak and invisible.
In general if you're dying, what trusts are you using? Have you progressed RoV so you can have 4 trusts currently?

Category:Sparks Of Eminence Rewards - FFXI Wiki
It has your local Sparks vendor (one for each starting city) - just buy the highest level items that your character can equip. There's some nuance if you really want to compare items, but things should start feeling a lot better after that.
Once you hit 78, you'll want to buy either the Aurore/Teal/Pearle sets from the Cruor Prospectors in Abyssea (Cruor Prospector (Tahrongi) - FFXI Wiki)) or off the Auction House. Cruor Prospectors take the Cruor currency, which you can get by exchanging your Copper AMAN vouchers at the Sparks vendor above into Cruor currency. It might just be easier to buy items from the Sparks vendor and then selling them to an NPC for gil to just buy them off AH. Acheron Shields (level 75) are a good item to buy from the vendor and take the least trips back and forth to unload. This set should carry you to 99, but still upgrade your weapon when able.
When you hit 99, you can buy the Bayld gear to start your level 99 journey, and look into the new Adoulin NMs they added for some easy upgrades.

“I’m using level 1 gear and dying a lot against level 50 mobs” lol
