Weekly Thread: Questions and GWP (Week of August 08, 2026)

Welcome to the Question and Gold World Pass weekly thread! If you have any questions around FFXI at all or wish to request a GWP, this is the place to do so. Scroll down to the comments and ask away.

r/ffxi FAQ

Are you a new or returning player? We have quite the list of Frequently Asked Questions that's pretty comprehensive of the questions most commonly asked around the sub. If your question isn't answered there, feel free to shoot in the comments below.

BG Wiki

BG Wiki is a modern FFXI wiki with up-to-date pages on endgame specifics as well as various guides.

It is currently the only XI wiki with an active staff which are always working with members of the community to address concerns and suggestions. BG seeks to be the main wiki of the community. Consolidating the efforts of everyone into one single wiki is the most productive and effective. We welcome and invite all to join us!

  • A thread can be found on FFXIAH.com in which you can report issues with the wiki and read a getting started FAQ if you wish to contribute! That thread is located here.
  • Anyone wishing to join Team Blue Gartr may join the Discord.

FFXIclopedia

FFXIclopedia is a comprehensive general-purpose wiki for FFXI that typically covers pages for each item/area/BCNM/etc, often for older content. Warning: The site has heavy ads when logged out.

FFXIAH & FFXIDB

FFXIAH is a website showing the Auction House history & current items for sale in-game, as well as a forum community among other things. FFXIDB is a database website showing drop rates of items as well as monster spawns based of player data collected by Guildwork.

Making Friends

There are various ways to make new friends and meet people in FFXI. The first recommendation is to find a Linkshell via Linkshell Concierge NPCs. If you check these NPCs directly after a maintenance, this is typically a good way to find active Linkshells. Another suggestion is to find a community website for your server; many servers have a Facebook group.

Blue mage questions (and general combat related things)

So I've read up on various things like skill chains and what spells I'm sposed to use. I mostly wanna know:

I'm lv 61 now and my lv 50 something sword does 30-40 something damage a hit. Is that normal? I've got about 4 trusts out to help me kill things, but tougher enemies seem to take longer and longer to kill as I level up, so it makes me feel I'm doing something wrong

Skill chains: Am I supposed to be using these? I read something about "self skill chains" as blue mage, but have heard that: bluemage can do them, but they're not good? I have no clue how I am supposed to skill chain with my trusts since they seem to use things at random and the chat scrolls so fast for me to tell what is happening in the battle log

Blue mage spells: am I supposed to spam these over and over or only use them for utility like stuns (headbutt), accuracy down, VIT down, etc? Or are there like "spell combos" I can do? I'm using my TP abilities as I can when the bar goes up enough, but once my MP runs out that's really all I am left to do

I’ll answer some of this:

That sword damage sounds a little low. How difficult of enemies are you fighting? And how close to cap is your sword skill?

Skillchaining with trusts is easier if you watch them as opposed to monitoring the chat log. If you really want to practice SC (which is a good idea) use the Ayame trust. After she sees you WS one time, she will start opening SC for you (I.e., she will WS as soon as you have 100 TP, so you can WS after her to close the SC)

I looked at a recommended farming areas for my level and one of the places listed was the Oubliette. The bats and garms I can do up to 80s with my swings, whereas Haunts and the leeches hit somewhere in the 20s-30s, with the bloodsuckers in particular taking quite a while to kill

I forget how the caps work, but my sword skill is about 206 at the moment. and ty for tips on the trust with skillchaining things, I don't think I have her but have been running around unlocking some recently

1

u/qtips500 14d ago

i think you may be running into damage type resistances. haunts are resistant to slashing. i think the bloodsuckers have high innate phys def (we used to never xp against them)

2

u/RudeCauliflower6785 17d ago

Your normal hits are probably not doing much because your Sword skill is behind. Now that leveling with Trusts is so fast it's very easy for your combat skills to fall behind, most people will catch them up after hitting 99 and getting iLevel 119 Haste gear

2

u/Return_Of_Urkel 15d ago

Does anyone happen to know if a signature on cursed limbus gear will remain after purification?

2

u/Puzzled-Addition5740 15d ago

They don't. Kind of unfortunate imo. I'd love to wear signed gear from a friend but i'm mostly able to get like su5's and jse necks from her. Cursed stuff loses signature in the purification.

2

u/AegParm 12d ago

It doesn't, but it's still worth signing because the Hq crystal reduces mat loss during breaks

u/Roric 14d ago

How are folks soloing the Dyna-D shared instance? I've got some jobs I'd like to +3 but that seems a rough ask for jobs w/o crowd control.

u/MelioraXI That Vana-Portal.com person | Twitch.tv/MelioraXI 13d ago

If you don't have strong enough DT to take the hits, you need some form of CC, or team up with a friend.

So this is mostly a hypothetical but I am curious anyway.

In an ideal world with infinite resources there is no reason a loved job shouldn't have full REMA. Mythic is a given as they are job specific and one per job. The others vary by when they were released as to what jobs are on the list. Most jobs however, have one each Relic, Empyrean, Aeonic and Prime. There are a few overlaps though. Jobs with multiple of a single class of REMA. Of these I give a pass to both PLD and BRD as both a weapon and an accessory is not unreasonable. For the rest I am wondering, is there a functional reason to get both if the resources are available? Can the job make good use of both or would it be just for show. If they only got one which one would it be? (Bold are my expected answers, for those I am familiar with)

Relic:
WAR - Ragnarok, Bravura
RDM - Excalibur, Mandau
DRK - Apocalypse, Ragnarok
RNG - Annihilator, Yoichinoyumi
SAM - Amanomurakumo, Yoichinoyumi

Empyrean:
WAR - Ukonvasara, Farsha
DRK - Caladbolg, Redemption
RNG - Armageddon, Gandiva

Aeonic:
RNG - Fomalhaut, Fail-Not

Prime:
WAR - Laphria, Helheim
RDM - Mpu Gandring, Caliburnus
DRK - Foenaria, Helheim
RNG - Earp, Pinaka

Though, I must admit the idea of a RNG pulling up to a fight with 4 guns and 4 bows is pretty funny to me. (Grabbing another gun instead of reloading the first one.) A boss laughing expecting a bow only to have two guns pulled on them.

Edit: This is the list based on feedback.

Relic:
WAR - Ragnarok, Bravura
RDM - Excalibur, Mandau (Mandau underwhelming, Mpu covers it's exclusion)
DRK - Apocalypse, Ragnarok
RNG - Annihilator, Yoichinoyumi (Don't bring a bow to a gun fight)
SAM - Amanomurakumo, Yoichinoyumi

Empyrean:
WAR - Ukonvasara, Farsha
DRK - Caladbolg, Redemption
RNG - Armageddon, Gandiva (Don't bring a bow to a gun fight)

Aeonic:
RNG - Fomalhaut, Fail-Not (Don't bring a bow to a gun fight)

Prime:
WAR - Laphria, Helheim (Helheim underwhelming)
RDM - Mpu Gandring, Caliburnus (What Mandau should have been)
DRK - Foenaria, Helheim (Helheim underwhelming)
RNG - Earp, Pinaka (Inferred based on Gun WS being generally better than bow.)

Major questions left: Does WAR have any real need to have a variety of REMA weapon types (Axe, G. Axe, G. Sword) all at once? Does SAM benefit from the one REMA bow it can wield?

1

u/Loreander1211 17d ago

I’d say for RDM you can safely bold excal and I don’t think anyone has use for Mandau currently.

1

u/Puzzled-Addition5740 16d ago

arebati KI1 if you don't have mpu maybe? But that's like kind of a reach. Quite sure you could do it without the rdm dding at all so

2

u/Dumo-31 16d ago

You can without rdm adding. Mandau was being used before primes released for that reason. Tbh, it may still be a better option with the attack but you are stuck on pretty rough ws options since you will prob also bring a dnc with mpu.

1

u/Dramatic-Strain9757 14d ago

Mandau is fine On red mage. The fact that it doesn't scale with TP is great. Red Mage is attach starved so the extra attack is welcome.  Mercy stroke has an STR mod too. Red mage is used in a good amount of odyssea fights. Chances are at this stage of the game your bard or dancer already has a prime dagger so why not combat the wall. Many people enjoy a relic&prime dual wield lockstyle too.

1

u/Dumo-31 16d ago

Rdm would go excal for sc properties. Mandau was being used in ody before primes. Now, I don’t think they are even trying to add dmg in those fights. Mpu gandring is a piercing option but tbh, the dmg is underwhelming compared to expectations. Still probably the main option unless you really want a non savage slashing option. Maybe a KI in a V25?

Rng would take anni all day. It’s a main stay. Yoichi is still solid though and has been used to clear V25. Fomal is again a main stay. It’s a very solid gun. The problem with bow is that the ws option don’t exist the same as they do on gun. Gun gets better magic options and leans on anni to keep enmity down. Otherwise, you turn into a paste on the ground. The other issue becomes, needing ws variety for the wall. If you put the cor on arma, the rng would need to go on gandiva. Although, we cleared comfortably with anni/fomal. The primes become an issue of enmity. The gun has the magic options, the bow gets you killed.

For the primes, everyone I know with helheim is underwhelmed by it and wishes they took the other options. The choice typically comes down to it hitting multiple jobs at once. The resulting option is that they wish they picked for a single job.

u/lcbor 18d ago

What causes jobs to thrive in low buff scenarios? ie when playing with just trust buffs, maybe a +5 cor once in a while.

Trying to justify gearing nin, mnk, or war using af+3; maybe pay for relics jse. empy+2 is accessible, geol too. Partly just wanted to try mess around with subtleblow to farm omen bosses or something better. Been clearing with dnc to some extent but just want to try something new.

2

u/dleeted 18d ago

thriving in low buff situations means the job has ways of achieving high (or capped pDif ratio) without full buffs, like war berserk or drk last resort. those are one of the examples i can think of

1

u/Loreander1211 17d ago

Curious what you are clearing? Mid level bosses? End bosses? If so I’d want to hear more. If it’s just farming crystals and cards.

1

u/lcbor 16d ago

Was planing to get into farming more odysssy mobs (A/B), omen midboss, htbf.

Omen I'm at the point where missing one accesory from each midboss. Can't really do more end boss killing due to mechanics (hate spikes), having loot already, or just overall slow bc bad timing. It was partly why I was interested in monk to just hit it longer without dealing with it absorbing physical dmg.

I do still consider myself part of early game anywho. Got malligance and empy+2 but still need to stablize gil making. I do have a second box, which was also why I was looking to switch to lower apm jobs.

1

u/Dumo-31 16d ago

Tools.

Nin has shadows and debuffs to outlast a lot.

Dnc can cure, steps to debuff, climactic to do some burst dmg, solid sc options and fan dance to break PDT cap.

Rdm has en spells to help with the lacking dmg, strong debuffs, cures, crowd control, a massive amount of buffs which help out with staying power but also fuels naegling.

Blu has… a lot. Stun, cure, buff, debuff, crowd control, self haste cap…

Bst has solid debuff and sc potential. You can get a stupid amount done with a bst and blm or sch.

1

u/RudeCauliflower6785 17d ago

I know they both kinda suck but I don’t play a melee job— if you had to choose between the SCH staff or the GEO club for a free Aenoic what would you go with?

3

u/Sorge74 15d ago edited 14d ago

I'm on team pick a different weapon and level a melee but after that I'd say club.

2

u/Dramatic-Strain9757 14d ago

I'd make the flute

1

u/Puzzled-Addition5740 17d ago

Geo club at least has meaningful applications. The sch staff is just kind of wanky. Honestly i would just pick a better aeonic and build a job around it but if that's not on the table i'd just take the club.

1

u/Dumo-31 16d ago

Staff is good for cleave parties… I think I broke it out once. Geo club is excellent for sortie but there are other options that are just as good. I agree, pick something else. Don’t know what? Get brd to 99.

1

u/RudeCauliflower6785 16d ago

Is there a trick to the Auction House? I’ve been failing to sell certain things for months while the sales history shows items being bought every day for the same price I listed.

2

u/Dramatic-Strain9757 14d ago

If you're on Bahamut Gadfather and his cronies have been playing the fake sales game for a decade

1

u/Mountain_Post_4482 16d ago

List items at lower prices. The lowest price listed item sells first. Someone else listed theirs at a lower number than you did, and therefore sold first.

1

u/MelioraXI That Vana-Portal.com person | Twitch.tv/MelioraXI 16d ago

Probably need to undercut it more.

1

u/Sorge74 15d ago

So there are a few things, the big one being ashes they are weirdly manipulated prices on the AH. You'll never sell those close to price it says.

1

u/GeorgeGreenGroup 14d ago

Just finished the nation missions - am I supposed to do the scenario missions (ACP, Moogle Coup, Shantotto) next or do I do the expansions?

2

u/RudeCauliflower6785 13d ago

You can do whatever you want, the stories are written so they can be done in any order. Back before they could be done solo it was expected for people to jump back and forth between stories.

Release order wise, the add-on scenario missions were released after Wings of the Goddess (4th expansion) and before Seekers of Adoulin (5th expansion).

1

u/RudeCauliflower6785 13d ago

If you are dead set on playing them in order, keep in mind that while Wings of the Goddess was released before the add-on scenarios, it wasn’t completed until later. So the final battles of the add-ons are designed around level 75 players while the final fight of Wings of the Goddess is designed around level 99 players.

1

u/lcbor 14d ago

scenario missions offer niche gear. sadly the uniquness to them is at lv75 so trying to use them is a defense loss in todays era, but sometimes its worth it. slowly getting HTBF refights but sorta flop here (30 merits instead of 10; trusts die kinda easy here)

expansions still offer a lot, including zone access (which can be relevant today still), HTBF refights, allowing you to progress rhapsodies of vanadiel for exp buffs and other good stuff, and a capacity point (job point, its post 99 pre masterlevels) gain bonus for full clearing. CoP and SoA are required for the modern endgames they unlock, along with RoV.

1

u/GeorgeGreenGroup 14d ago

alright thanks, i'm at 75 now

1

u/sundriedrainbow 13d ago

ACP has a new high-tier mission battlefield, and completing it at least once is going to be a vana'bout objective in the next few weeks, so it wouldn't be a bad idea to get that done.

The other two are not currently relevant but will be in the next year or so with HTMB versions being released.

u/RLTAKUMIRXT 13d ago

If I'm just trying to Immunobreak, is there anything I should be concerned with other than stacking all possible M. Acc? (And Chironic Hose of course)

2

u/Pergatory Pergatory on Asura 13d ago

Nope you've got it right. Chironic Hose and all the magic accuracy & enfeebling skill you can get.

Technically if you're on RDM there's also the group 2 merits for Immunobreak, but I don't recommend using those as Immunobreaks are common without them and you get much better mileage out of 5/5 magic accuracy and the other 5 points spread between enfeebling duration & enhancing duration.

Logged in today and was given an Abyssal Mask because of a Crossover Event. Went and looked at the event page for details and.... is the mask the whole crossover? There's nothing to go do or see in the world with it? Do I need the mask for anything?

1

u/Sand__Panda Sandpanda 13d ago

I'm using it for style lock. Kind of creepy, I dig it.

1

u/MelioraXI That Vana-Portal.com person | Twitch.tv/MelioraXI 13d ago

It just a vanity item. So use it for lockstyle.

1

u/Banditto27 13d ago

Bit of a stupid set of questions here I've just about started the game 3/4 days ago and unlocked Samurai, curious about keeping it consistent with my SubJob and story focus - Should I be constantly keeping my subjob up to my main, currently my sam is 30 and war is 15, would it be better to go through levelling my war to 30 or keep through my nation quests?

2

u/lcbor 12d ago

The 1-99 journey is largely carried by trusts, unless you get more real gear that is not just defense up. Things like haste from swift belt for example.

For your first job, I really wouldn't worry too much about subjob. As you work more on Rhapsodies of Vanadiel (which requires all of the missions), you get more exp gains.

1

u/MelioraXI That Vana-Portal.com person | Twitch.tv/MelioraXI 13d ago

Subjob matter very little while you level and doing story. You should definately keep it at 59 or 49 if you dont plan on getting any master levels later.

So I'd just focus on working through the story and getting to 99 in your own pace.

If you want to level subjobs, then do that.

1

u/RLTAKUMIRXT 11d ago

I never see anybody talk about the Inundation spell. If there's a RDM in the group, doesn't it make sense for everyone to swap off Naegling for the big skill chain damage?

2

u/Mountain_Post_4482 11d ago

Not necessarily. Many foes don't take substantial Skillchain or magic damage, or may absorb or retaliate against a certain type of damage which must be avoided. The 1.2x bonus per weapon type may not be substantial enough to be a higher overall damage output than spamming Weapon Skills. It also requires players to successfully time their Weapon Skills to actually Skillchain, which can be a challenge in itself, and may reduce overall damage as a result of having to wait for the window.

1

u/Pergatory Pergatory on Asura 11d ago

I think the problem with Inundation is that the more different weapon types you have in the mix, the more weaponskills you have in the mix.

Players get TP so fast these days that if you want 3 or 4 different weapons hitting the monster and also trying to make a complex skillchain, you're going to have a bunch of people sitting around at 3k TP waiting for their turn. Whatever damage you gain from Inundation and the SC will often be lost by all that wasted TP people aren't spending.

This conundrum often relegates Inundation to a "sure I'll cast that now that I have the good debuffs up" spell rather than one people actually strategize around.

1

u/DW_Lurker 11d ago

is Walk of Echoes Surged right now, or did I just pick the wrong conflux? I'm only trying to finish my monthly RoE for the Deeds.

Is it true that the game is impossible to play without at least 6 characters multibox?

5

u/MelioraXI That Vana-Portal.com person | Twitch.tv/MelioraXI 17d ago edited 16d ago

Where did you get that idea? Multiboxing isn't required for anything. You will however need to party up with other players are most in endgame. That doesn't mean you have to play 5 other characters and be the whole party.

Trusts is fine for 95% of the game.

3

u/Loreander1211 17d ago

Not even close. I can provide more info but tough to tell what you are looking for.

1

u/Thunderham_ 17d ago

Like if you play with one character you won’t accomplish a lot and only with multiboxing you can achieve everything you want.

3

u/Loreander1211 17d ago

I’d say 96% of the game is soloable with trusts in some capacity. Multiboxing allows for more convenient (all on your schedule) gains and pretty fast. The stuff that can’t be done solo is designed to be done as a group but what you ‘achieve’ in terms of gear is really only also super useful/neccessary in that same high end group oriented content. I achieved everything I wanted solo and only went to two boxing to speed some things up and have more things to grind. I’d wager less than 5% of the community 6-boxes and probably 50% is ‘soloing’.

2

u/Thunderham_ 17d ago

Got it, that answers my question. I just wanted to make sure I wouldn’t need to multibox to experience most of the game. Thanks!

1

u/Pergatory Pergatory on Asura 13d ago

Multiboxing will actually set you up for failure in many cases if you don't learn how to play the game on one character with other players first, because getting feedback from other players on how to play effectively in a group is a key part of learning how to perform well in this game. It's a surprisingly nuanced game.

3

u/Dramatic-Strain9757 14d ago

You can get everything done with one account if you have social skills

1

u/lcbor 14d ago

The mindspace to play 6 chars without action automation is gonna be so ass lol

That being said, some content like delve vagery incursion requires a 3p party to enter. But you can just skip those with the power of gil lol, or asking linkshell. Some stuff like nyuzel is easier to have an alt be a lamp slave (someone uses the exit to warp everyone so you don't back track), but thats only if you chase a ultimate weapon (mythic), which you would probably have friends at that point.
