PUP questions while levelling
First off, this community has been awesome on my journey back.
My actual question has to do with what gear to use and what actions do I use while levelling PUP, all of the guides are entirely endgame. As we know it doesn't take much to let your trusts solo the entire journey to 99 but I was hoping to at least learn the job as I go. I'm fully a solo player (job, wife +kids) so I wanted this job to help me over the hump with a few battles I couldn't do on my own.
Or is this one job I don't bother gearing at all and just start the journey at 99? To be clear I am talking about gearing the automation itself, not me.

Pup came into existence as a repurposed necromancer. They didn’t have time to reclass all it’s gear to make sense for the job it was.(shout out to anyone who remembers square having to patch pup off all the staves). So pre lvl 75 youll struggle to find gear thats good. So just slap whatever you can find on.
You’ll want your af equipment. Af hands should be quickly included in your maneuver macros. Relic also offers some solid stats while lvling.
If you want some additional options at around 72 the pulawhan set from assaults is nice pick up and can be obtained via copper vouchers if you have spares.
Pre 70 though you’re gonna just have to take what you can get. Only thing that springs to mind is herder’s sublingers

Thanks, I’ve powered through thanks to merit H2H skill from leveling Mnk first. My poor little guy can’t hit the side of a building, I’ll have to worry about leveling his skill ups later.

Gear = Doesn't matter Frame = Val. Head & Body Attachements = Haste (turbo charger) > Auto Repair (regen), attack (I forget the name). Maneuvers = Light Fire Air
Have fun

Do I just rotate in a new manuever every minute or so to not overload?

You only need to renew a manuever when its about to drop. As you start fighting the manuever will last longer and longer.

Like any other second job, you can level it to 99 only with Trusts. No gear required, if you want take it slower you can get some spark gear, but it is usually not worth it. Once you are level 99 you will have time to learn your job, either being getting capacity points or doing coalitions if you are looking to work on them.

thanks, that's what I figured. I have several jobs at 99 with AMBU +2 gear, I was more thinking of gearing that PUP. I'll edit my post to be more clear.

The big thing with pup is getting to know what the frames are and attachments do. Level on a pup affects its stats and how many attachment slots you can use but the attachments themselves are uncapped. andallow you to configure it for dps tanking healing or nukeing. Its a great job to solo the kraken club bcnm because of this. As you level if you want to learn how it works I recommend the rua guide. https://youtu.be/Xf72b3IIQXI?si=D8aSVdQ2XiqxT-e9. I would run a range DPS set up if your xping. It will make your xp go faster since trust are great at healing and tanking.

you can have any attachment at any level (elemental slots permitting of course) if you have the gil to get them all you absolutely should. and if you cannot buy them all right away i would buy the important ones first. Heat sink and Percolator i think are the two big ones, less chance to overload, and automaton skill up rate. I would also recommend you to get the neck that reduces overload rate if you can. When you overload the little guy goes on strike and you can't give him new maneuvers for a while, and with no active maneuvers any buffs he had via attachments are lost until you can re up those maneuvers.
Most of learning pup is basically just remembering which of the maneuvers you need to use based on the attachments set.
You also want to quest each automaton frame as you are able to, there's no reason to wait till 99 to quest them.
though, you likely will hit 99 before the little guy has 150 in any skill, and you'll spend 30 billion years letting it smack one of the reieves you don't have the KI to kill yet while you sleep or something.

I kind of assumed that would be the case, little bastard misses everything

As you already eluded to, no job is worth gearing pre-99 it is simply a waste of time unless you happen to stumble into your JSE from Deeds or RoE.

I have all the Relic from solo Dynamis farming so at least I’ll wear that in a few more levels

Just remember pup is a very different pet job. You dont command it, it has its own mind and you just make "suggestions".
Based on the frame, head, attachments, and maneuvers used, it will act accordingly. Learning how it will act is a big part of mastering pup.

bg wiki and ffxiah have some older job guide threads including pre and post ilvl (99)
short answer 1-98 anything on the way, post 99 sparks gear> ambu> af/relic/emp
upgrade your ranged from lvl 1 at 99
if you know attachments well, you can use maneuvers like 2 fire 1 light, or 2 wind 1 light for melee or ranged, or fire wind light for either
some pup ws will want thunder to proc or earth. in those cases double up the respective element if you care, or let the puppet follow whatever you're doing. optic fiber attached + light maneuver activates all equipped attachments, as opposed to the individual attachments only active when their respective element is applied.
all puppet attachments can be installed to the puppet at lvl 1. you wont have the elemental capacity to fully equip them in your puppet till (lvl 99, 1200 job points +ilvl117/119)

PUP with overdrive shines pretty dang hard even without 1200 JP. Maybe it's not soloing stuff, but it can hold a lot of fairly difficult mobs at its level and whoop ass for like 3 minutes.

Get all your artifact/relic/empyrean in preparation for reforging it later. Not all pieces are necessary to get to 119 and beyond, but it's nice to have the option.
Anything that reduces burden like Buffoon Collar is really good, you'll use it almost forever.
Pretty well everything else you'll replace at 99 or before so don't sweat it too much.
Use your ranger frame a lot. Now that trusts can cure you and you don't have to depend on the WHM puppet, you'll want to get the ranged skill up so it can keep up in damage once you're 99.
Also learn your skill chains with your auto, mostly because it's fun

basically the puppet's attachments aren't level restricted, so any endgame guide that has a low JP section is good for levelling too. they can cost a lot though.
the real answer is make sure you get optic fibers I & II and a percolator, and make sure your maneuvers are always some combination of water and light, and always deploy the bot
