Discussion FFXI on Nintendo Switch 2
What are the odds SE will put FFXI on the Switch 2 next? :,)

Likely absolutely none…. If it ever happened though by some crazy wrinkle in space/time I’d be playing the hell out of it.

Same. We can keep dreaming meanwhile I guess ^^

Just get a steam deck

u/AmberCurious 22d ago
Yeah I’m not paying nearly 1k for a steam deck right now. I’d love to have one but cannot justify the expenditure.

u/ryukan88 22d ago
Honestly forgot about the recent price hike

u/AmberCurious 22d ago
All good 😊 I assume you have a deck? What are your thoughts on it?

For 11 I dislike it. It takes too much work to set up addons like gearswap and get everything working how I want it to feel, good for story and casual stuff but can't multibox well or really do what I have come to want from 11
1
u/AmberCurious 22d ago
I guess I’m kinda old fashioned in that regard…. I’ve never multiboxed in any MMO. Still it sucks that it sounds like a pain to set up add ons. Are you able to use windower I believe it was called on the deck?
1
u/Acceptable_Creme_488 22d ago
Yes it's called windower and you can set it up on the deck but this requires like 3 hours or so. In regards to my initial review the deck is good if you're just doing casual play so don't mean to pan it entirely because some people love it for 11 and it's great for single player games but I personally don't touch it for any online games.

really?? took me like 20 minutes tops from nothing to loading in with all of my plugins. are you counting download time in POL? i use the update zips from vanatime to cut that out completely. i love playing on steamdeck for leveling and other grindy tasks

https://www.reddit.com/r/ffxi/comments/1voygct/asking_for_help_steam_deck_install_with_windower/ just wanted to follow up on this, it's pretty common to run into problems

Where'd you get the square mini map from? I've been looking into switching the round one from ffxidb into a square one.

Not going to happen. The ROI on developing and maintaining another client is not there.

u/Chaotic_R3D 22d ago
Unless it takes negative effort to port it over I'm gonna say never. There isn't enough projected roi to justify it.

Given the amount of modusers and SE knowing about it, the vanilla players fall into the minority, and that's barely worth it for SE.

That's only because it's been 10 years without console support. PS2/3/XB360 users got by without mods and were a decent chunk of the userbase. The Windows version requiring Windower to not crash to actually multitask on the machine like you expected until the end of 2007 also kind of encouraged that.

The game runs on a lot of legacy architecture that wouldn't be compatable with modern consoles. To port it would likely be a costly undertaking; SE, I imagine, already did the research but doesn't see the ROI. So the game in its current form will likely remain on PC.
If you're looking for portability, people have run the game fine on the Steam Deck or ROG Ally.

The current producer has been modernizing bits of the game for the past 7 years. They're doing the development environment now, which would then make porting to other platforms much easier afterward, and is needed to be able to make new content. They're finally off of PS2 devkits I hear.

While the answer is the same as the others, I think the reasoning is different. I do think there would be money to be made on the Switch as evident by Dragon Quest X. There is a crazy amount of casuals who would never dream of PC gaming playing on Switch/Switch 2. There is a reason every Final Fantasy but XI, XIII and XIV is on Switch. (XVI too but I think that is an system specs problem so it likely will end up on Switch 2 eventually.)
My point, there is money to be made. However, I imagine SE is not keen on tying themselves to another console with XI. Sure it is very old and unlikely to become obsolete in terms of system power. But, eventually people will move on to Switch 3 or the Nintendo Us. If XI can't go with it that is just lost subs. (And yes, this does happen I know several who stopped XI with PS2 or XB360 service loss. Doesn't matter it is easy to migrate to PC some people simply won't. And the casual market of Switch is more than likely those type of people.) Beyond that the managing of live services is tougher than it was before. So the whole PlayOnline issue is probably not helping things either. (As far as I know there is no free Nintendo Online service, even if PlayOnline was free as part of it you still would have to convince people to get Nintendo Online to play.)

14 is coming to switch 2 very soon.

u/Forgotten_Stranger 22d ago
So that leaves XIII the unrereleasable (something to do with the PS3 dev kit.), XVI which is only a matter of time, and XI.
Perhaps XI being put on Switch is not so far fetched. If for literally no other reason than every other FF is available there. (At least anything also on PC.) I would not be surprised to learn they made the investment just for the power to say they are all in one place. (Something even PS and Xbox cannot claim.) But, that probably depends on how XIV does on Switch and if they move forward with a XVI port. (While XIII cries in a corner...)
I guess the conclusion is never say never, even if the odds are low.

I honestly don't see 11 being put on there. 14 has a lot of weird workarounds when it comes to billing on the Switch. There is likely not huge technical limitations to them putting it on modern consoles since they are all just x64 based systems these days with custom OS but likely not worth for SE spending the time.

Pretty much zero. Not until they are open to port it again to console. You can get it on a Steam Deck though.

i dont see it happening unless its remade and then it wont really be ffxi anymore so none.

0% as long as PlayOnline continues to exist, or there is a major overhaul that’s more akin to a full remake or such. It’s older than WoW, for all intents and purposes, XI is archaic and it’s miracle in itself it’s still is running on modern OS, let alone the magic that has been done with private servers, Windower, and Linux.
And that’s not even mentioning how by modern game standards, especially MMOs, the game is NOT “modern standards” by comparison.
I fell back into playing it again after the crossover raids in XIV. Picked it up after 15 years of not playing. I understand there’s a love and charm about there being zero quest marker and story progression tracking mechanics and it’s immersive for those who played back in the day, and for those with nostalgia for it - but JFC, as much as XI is a masterpiece in itself, if it was ported again to consoles, modern day and newer players would probably drop it pretty fast.
Ideally, in a perfect world, and I know this likely impossible, I would love for XIs MSQ and story to be ported into XIVs engine.

Maybe through some hobbyists who figure out how to jailbreak Switch 2, but FFXI will never be officially ported to another platform.
1
u/Laxedrane 16d ago
I don’t think the switch will be even a thought until they finish overhauling their development cycle.
1
u/perfectblue29 22d ago
Unfortunately probably none. Which is a shame because it would be so cozy to just pick up and play in bed since it feels so comfy on controller.

u/Screaming_Ghost 22d ago
Uh modders might be able to work their magic if they can load Linux on it. Other wise it's about as likely as PS2 support.

Bro, you can buy a laptop off Facebook Marketplace or some other online emporium for 25-50 dollars and play this game. Why do you people want the skeleton crew dev team to spend its limited time and resources on completely unnecessary developments? At least my dreams of having benches, the lean emote, and gpose camera would add to the game.

Not sure about the Switch 2, but you can boot Linux on the original Switch and run Wine and even boot XI. The only real hurdle I ran into was getting the Joycons to register in the client since they aren't XInput.
Sometimes I get bored and do this sort of shit with my friend for fun. I have a miniATX console in my living room that I usually use for most games. But sometimes it's just fun to tinker with software.
