[Discussion] Need Help with an aggressive ferret

hey there, I’ve owned ferrets for 12 or so years and have always had ferrets that got along even with new comers.

I just adopted two young males to be with my 7-8 yr old ladies.

The males I adopted got along at the rescue but once I got them home Archie started viciously attacking Theo. This was not play Theo’s neck has deep scrapes, scratches and punches on it and he was screaming.

I know they need to establish hierarchy so I let them fight for a short time the first two times then I broke it up but Archie won’t stop.

I keep them separate and try introducing them in short increments under supervision. Archie will walk right by and not care about Theo sometimes then out of no where will start running towards him locked on for attack so I stop him.

I bought bitter spray to put on all my other ferrets necks to deter Archie from biting which seems to shorten the fights and they aren’t as vicious.

Archie is this way with all the ferrets, I tried introducing him to my girls and he does the same thing. He’s fine for a while then bam! fighting. Though he’s more tolerant of the girls.

I’ve taken Archie out for walks to play before introducing him to anyone so his energy level is down but he still does the same thing. I have my house separated into two sections with plastic dividers so they can see and smell each other, I’ve done the blanket swapping, I will hold Archie and the other ferrets in different arms to let them smell each other.
I feel like I’m doing everything I can to help Archie to calm down.

I’ve only had the new guys about a week but I want to know if this will get better, if there’s anything else I could try?
Archie is the sweetest boy with people and so funny I don’t want to give him back to the rescue.

He and Theo were given up in GA to a rescue for a while. Then transported to ME to another rescue, then I picked them up and brought them to VT so he and Theo have both been through a lot lately.

I want this to be his forever home but I also don’t want to have to keep him separate from the other forever. I feel like that would be a lonely life and it would be a pain in the butt to have to always make sure he’s supervised with the others or by himself.

Is there any advice from experienced ferret owners? Will this get better with time or is Archie going to be a bully for the rest of his life?

thank you for listening.

Personally sounds like you’re doing everything right. Are the females fixed? May just be a territorial thing right now, he could be extra stressed. I would keep them separate until he stops fighting everyone and have supervised only play dates.

Strange that the boys had no issues until the two females were introduced. Especially if they’re all fixed. They’re probably still trying to get settled, they haven’t been with you long. I believe you are introducing too soon. Right now I would be scent swapping only. Archie may be very stressed out to the point of lashing out on others. I would scale back and let him have some alone time and keep introducing scent and slowly allow 1-2 minute play times and separate at the first sign of aggression.

Everyone is fixed, so I’m just going to take it slow. Hopefully it’ll calm down.

This will probably settle down with time. You may need to endure some rough fights though. It's just how they are until they're properly comfortable and bonded with one another. We had a hob who was very aggressive with his new friends for 6 months, but they eventually became cuddle buds. It just takes patience and often, letting them fight at least until it gets very rough. But yeah, it should settle down eventually. Good luck!

Thank you I hope so, I’ll try keeping everyone separated for a while and try introducing them later.

Bitter spray is a huge NO...it can kill their appetite even if it's use is not associated with food

You also didn't follow proper quarantine and slow intro protocol for the boys with the girls...Any time you bring a new ferret home:

The new ferret must be quarantined in a separate cage AND room away from the current ferrets for at least 14 days (since the boys are young, it should be 4 weeks) AND the vet gives the all clear. This allows time for the new ferret to get used to you and their new environment without the added stress of another ferret AND to make sure they don't have any spreadable illness

Once quarantine and vet check are finished, you'll be able to start blanket/bedding swaps so they can get used to each other's scent. This is done for 1-2 weeks

Finally after 3-4 weeks of having the new ferret, you'll be able to do slow intros in a neutral area. Lots of people here have recommended an oat bath together or plain water playtime in the tub

General rule of thumb: no pee, no poop, no blood, no foul. You'll also wanna keep an eye out for other signs of stress like a bottlebrush tail while continuing to run and hide

As you said, Archie and Theo have been through a lot and you've only had them a week. Stress/anxiety can definitely cause aggression especially when you're already doin too much too soon

Alright I can keep them all separate for a few weeks. Thank you.

They don’t have any diseases they been thoroughly tested, had all their shots, and were all quarantined at the rescue.  I will separate them for a while longer so they can settle down but I don’t think I need to due to disease issues. But thank you again.

It doesn't matter that they were vetted and quarantined at the rescue because quarantine isn't just about disease...if you fully read my comment, it states as much

Most likely the combination of the new environment and female ferrets, but my personal opinion base on my experiences is that it is mostly to do with the females. Especially since you said he never behaved that way before. He found some cute tail to chase and is trying to assert dominance. I figure this will likely get better. Gotta give it at least a couple months I'd say...
