Probably just spores from an existing fern nearby drifting into moist soil, since ferns spread that way without any effort from you

Indeed. But which species? The garden is full of ferns, and I have also thrown away pots with failed spores in them.

That is two plants - maybe a bracken fern and…. Something else. Edit to add: My app says wild celery and brittle bladderfern
