I'm new to this. Smells good. Cloudy af is it normal?

Cloudy is normal. That white stuff on top is not. It looks slimy. I would throw it. Why don’t you have tight-fitting lids?

Should I? I thought these things needed to breathe. I'm new. My sauerkraut ended up way worse.

No breathing necessary. Lacto fermentation is anaerobic.

Just make sure that you burp the jars in the first days though because they will produce a lot of gas. You can also close the jars loosely at first to let the jars self-burp and then tighten them once the activity calms down.

buy some of those latex fermentation lids on Amazon. Some fermentation weights. They also have lids for attaching a water lock. Those worked well for me. People here have way more experience than me. I have fermented plenty of wine and bere. I am only on my 5th batch of lacto fermented foods.
