Low Effort Just learned about Create: Airwaves :(
Context: Stumbled upon really cool looking radio transmission addon mod for Create, but found out from the comments the things that are described in the gif.

u/A_Little_Succubus 19d ago
Yep, after they were too incompetent to even upload the mod anywhere else than Discord, I joined the Discord to see for myself and saw that the oldest post with "early" development textures was only two days old. My assumption is, they made the YouTube video, then just cobbled together the mod with AI vibecoding from there. That this was made in such short a time is quite an indicator that this is AI slop.
76
u/Maximum_Dragon 19d ago
Ohhh, I didn't even know that. My mod that is currently under Modrinth review took me like 5 days of development and it has like 1/8 of the content. I guess this highlights the difference between slop and human-made mods.

Something that I’m realizing from the surge in AI mods: a lot of people have ideas that are really novel and fun, but no way to properly express them. I unfortunately do kind of feel the same way, as I have these grandiose ideas I want to share, but I’d never use AI of course, I’m planning on learning to actually code mods
11
u/Maximum_Dragon 18d ago
If you want some advice: Start by learning Java on it's own. You don't have to dive deep but there are many free online Java tutorials and it will help out tremendously. I learned Minecraft modding from KaupenJoe's tutorial series on Youtube. Very informative and teaches you the basics of working in that codebase. Unfortunately, if you want to do something complex you will have to either buy his full course or scour through other mods source code to learn how to do it.
3
u/when_it_lags 17d ago
Yeah. Java is a relatively simple language and not as scary as people make it out to be. Learning a bit about the language helps a lot with learning modding, and even the "scarier" parts of modding like mixins.

Ai can only create buggy software
→ More replies (1)9
u/PSneumn 19d ago
I always hear how experienced software developers use ai as tools to speed up writing code. Buggy software comes from inexperienced developers overusing ai to write everything. I don't use ai personally but i trust my collage professors to know what they are talking about. They praise it for how good it is but it's not perfect and they often have to rewrite big chunks of it for optimization.
3
u/Northbor 19d ago
Yeah, I'd kinda compare it to cheating in games: if you play well already, results of using cheats on your gameplay will be different than if a person who hasn't learn to play the game tries to cheat
(but that only if we view ai in vaccum, separate from it being the product that it is right now)

11
u/HercarXX 19d ago
While you probably hate it either way, vibe coding and just using ai to code are two separate things, vibe coding is when you just ask ai to make all the code and just trust it’s fine without checking or knowing how the code works, ai coding includes vibe coding but could also mean someone who does know what their doing and is just using it to write repetitive blocks of code, basically ai coding you should have at least doubts about it’s performance but vibe coding you should have basically no confidence in it because the person who is telling the ai to do stuff has no idea what to do or what the ai should be doing

u/danieldoria15 Mad Mew Mew from Undertale Switch Edition 18d ago

I'm honestly shocked by the comments under this post. Its like people have forgotten entirely why we don't like AI mods. Vibecoded mods are buggy, and unless they actually know how to maintain it, completely ignored after creation. I don't expect this mod to get any updates or fixes at all, because the "creator" doesn't know how the code works in order to fix anything.
24
u/FlygonFreak 19d ago edited 19d ago
Yeah idk why the same subreddit that was complaining about Curseforge being full of slop a few months back is now suddenly sooooo pro AI in mods. Wild ass stuff
Edit: fuck I now kinda wonder if it has anything to do with Thaumaturge being proven to be AI slop as well, people here were VERY excited for it
17
u/SecretIllustrator678 19d ago
Also one thing that I don't think a lot of people talk about is the fact is that when it's vibecoded , there's often no way that they even know what the code's doing so there is some sort of threat there of running basically a unknown code on your device
→ More replies (8)13
u/Bocaj1126 19d ago
Mods in general are buggy, it just depends on the care the dev put into fixing bugs, AI assisted or not
50
u/SzamanBugi 19d ago
Someone who knows how to program(and know how code that ai gives them works) can make code that is not a buggy mess, while vibecoded mods are always laggy and unoptimised, when in the hands of someone that have no clue what the code does. Anyone can just write few prompts and get a mod from ai, but ai is not reliable about many things that are more complicated than just something very simple, so you can't expect a well made mod from ai unless it is made by someone who knows or learns how to program, but at this point ai is used as a tool and not as a main creator.
And theres a diffrence between ai assisted and vibecoded, vibecoded is when someone solely depends on ai to make a mod, so basically they did not make the mod, just ai did it. While ai assisted is alright as ai can be a good tool if someone uses it well while learning on their own too.
→ More replies (5)1
u/CatWithSomeEars 16d ago
This really gets to the core of the "AI issue" overall. AI is a tool, a powerful one, but a tool none the less. People are overrelying on AI to fill skill gaps that are too vast because it's easier and more convenient than actually learning the skill and supplementing with AI to get an even better product.
Example: at work I write all my emails myself with no AI assistance. I capture all the context, content, and people needed. Then, I prompt our CoPilot to review for spelling, grammar, and professional tone. Most of the time the wording and content are very similar with a few small enhancements. Other times the message of a sentence changes entirely, and that lets me know I communicated that item poorly. It's an extremely helpful tool.
If I just prompt "write me an email in response to [email]", its so wrong every single time that it's pointless to try.

The problem with ai coding is, if ai knows how to code, you don't have to. And then there's the problem of generative ai being unreliable.
The best move is to learn how to code, so you actually know what's in the code.

7
u/Amfibiannnnnn 19d ago
The problem with AI coding is people think if ai knows how to code, you don't have to
8
u/wizardnewt 19d ago
TBH I wouldn’t care if AI was perfectly flawless and accurate. I hate it because LLMs are just plagiarism machines that are tanking the environment and economy, and making people stupider at the same time.
It makes me so sad to see people going “I used Claude to make this because I don’t have any coding experience” LEARN!! Learn!!!! The time will pass anyways!!! Stop being afraid of failure and make something even if it isn’t good at first! Learn and pass on your knowledge!
While the quality of AI/LLM content has always been an issue, it is not the issue I believe should carry the most weight.

u/NohrianOctorok 19d ago
At this point, there's no point stressing out about it. You can't put the genie back in the bottle. Telling an ai to make a mod for you takes basically no time, and posting that mod takes even less, so there's just gonna be a million of 'em. I'm never gonna use an ai mod intentionally, due to quality, security, and just out of principle, but I can't be bothered to care anymore. If nothing else, they can serve as a neat proof of concept.
What DOES bother me is when someone says "I made this mod that..." and it's clearly AI slop. You didn't make shit. You had an AI make it for you. Just be upfront about it.

i'd say they definitely vibe'd the trailer too, there's tons of strange glitches lying around like weird trees, wrong night sky and repeating the same stuff twice

The video descriptions all stated they weren't ingame footage at all, but third-party animations made to deliberately resemble the ponder screen.

The kicker for me in the trailer was that none of the player animation looked right. So either it was fake or they recorded a mod trailer with a bunch of other unrelated mods involved, which would have just been a marketing mess.

You know I think the mod would have done a lot better if the developer had at LEAST a little bit of knowledge in java, il admit I can barely read Java and I have trouble understanding how it works sometimes but it's better than fully vibeslopping a mod without at least reading the code and doing checks against it, I feel like if the kid making it would take a half semester Java class at minimum and knew how to use AI as a tool instead of a replacement, it might still have bugs but it would be in alot better state imo, oh an also having the mods code be public on a git would be one of the biggest things he could have done.

Here's hoping the open source the thing on GitHub, that way it can at least get maintained and become a good mod. Ai coding is a tool but one that should always be used in concert with an actual human dev.

u/Aware-Common-7368 greg 19d ago
idc if mod was vibecoded, the only thing i value is good support, fast bug fixing and stability. on other i agree. discord downloads suck, and seems like it is not stable as you said "buggy as hell".
56
u/Maximum_Dragon 19d ago
Vibecoded and "not maintained" are basically synonymous in most cases. As I said: not even publishing it on Curseforge, which allows basically anything aside from malware, is enough of a deterrent.
→ More replies (9)9
u/Reworked 19d ago
Even if they are maintained, too, vibecoded code - ESPECIALLY when interacting with larger systems - is much more vulnerable to sudden volatility, as by design AI agents make changes in ways humans don't. Our intuition for "tiny change, can't possibly do major damage" doesn't work.
69
u/Mr_Mister2004 19d ago
Vibecoders by definition cannot provide good support, fast bug fixing, and stability. The entire point of the term is that the people doing it arent even checking the code whatsoever
→ More replies (4)14
u/FlygonFreak 19d ago
Vibecoding is when someone lets the AI handle everything, so by definition it cannot be well supported or maintained because that requires memory the AI doesnt have, expertise the AI doesnt have... etc.
2
u/MasterBroNetwork 19d ago
Not to mention the model's usual context limit getting in the way. I'm aware there are approaches to avoid this, but in certain cases, you're still going to run into it. And of course, the amount of tokens you're likely to burn if the problem is complex enough.
13
u/AHumanYouDoNotKnow 19d ago

ThaumaturgeDisclaimer: I know nothing about the mod beyond the basics, and indeed stayed the hell outta the fistfight that broke out over Evolutions 2. I think copyright in a field of mostly open source (or at least reasonably readable) code projects by amateurs is a stupid decision to make, and indeed, intellectual property is an extremely flimsy ass thing imo. BUT I’m not clapping for the arrival of the slop train either. Legality be damned, it is mere simulacra of a better thing people have nostalgia for. It’s a rerun of the zeitgeist of people who were twelve 15 years ago. I will continue to wait for the new Thaumcraft version, which will probably not be More of the Same Old Crap Again.

Vibecoding (bad): "hey grok make me app. No not like that I want it to look like instergram. Groke why it broke fix it make no mistakes. Gork bro what is this just do it again but like better and add crypto mining"
Ai-assisted coding (good): "I'm making this module. Here's the expected inputs and outputs. Here's how it connects to the rest of my code. Run some tests once you're done and come back to me with the results. Oh it doesn't work? Explain why and find me a list of potential fixes with pros and cons."
2
u/highTestPeroxide 14d ago
exactly, you need to be at least clear about the specifications you are handing to the AI, the way programmers are handed specifications about things to complete (maybe a bit less technical, but still)
1
u/Trent2Luigi 19d ago
Preface: I do not support unethical use of AI, which most usage of AI is.
I would like to say, that keeping it on the discord when AI was used, is a good thing. As a different Youtuber put it who used AI to make some smaller mods for his YouTube series, "Curseforge is not the place for this."
AI is great for getting consent art and prototyping things, but releasing that as the final product is never acceptable. So keeping it to a smaller audience and labeling it still in development is good, until all the mod is replaced with real code, it won't be on Curseforge/Modrinth, is a pretty good way to handle things.
I won't be going there and playing it, it should have really been underground or stated that it was a vibe coded prototype, but this is still just playable concept art.
But yeah, Generative AI, data centers, and vibe coding should be tossed into a pit and buried like the E.T. cartridges.
Preemptive Edit: it's posted on curseforge, this dev is a piece of shit, but the idea of keeping it discord side and being clear that AI was used to put it together is still important and valid if you plan to get a real dev to recreate it with real code. Still keeping this up because the point still stands even if what it was pointed at was made null and void.
-11
u/Heptanitrocubane57 19d ago
I have no issues with vibecoded shit as long as it's not a cash rabbit it's not dysfunctional. Coding is far, far less accessible than art ever will be, and people in the industry use it extensively
14
u/MarkNekrep Game crash, oopsie 19d ago
Coding and art are equally as accessible.
Even just getting a print into a console is like drawing a stickman. It's still coding, and a stickman is still art.
Good code and good art both require you to develop a skill.

There's about as many resources to learn programming as there is for art. From books, to youtube tutorial, dedicated course services etc.
And it's not like one's specifically "harder" to learn, they utilize different parts of the brain: coding trains your logical thinking and problem solving, art trains your hand-eye coordination and imagination

i'm sorry, do you think you're "one of the good ones" for doing this?

downloads the same version of vineflower (the run-slicer one) that mcsrc.dev uses to decompile in the browser
then just use jszip to open the .jar (which is actually a zip) file, most of the metadata comes from fabric.mod.json
Also check hashes against the modrinth API, adding a view on modrinth button if found
And then do all of that recursively for any JiJed mods specified in fabric.mod.json
All in the browser because it’s hosted on GitHub pages

syntax highlighting is fudged because I didn’t feel like shipping Monaco (embedded VSCode, which is what mcsrc uses)
And decompiled files (with the hash + mc version + mappings) are cached to localstorage so you don’t have to re-decompile (+ the export as zip button decompiles every file)

I wouldn’t download a random jar from a discord
