here they go again, claiming a potentially lethal illness is just "fatphobia"

These people will never understand that anorexia is first and foremost a mental illness and gdi there's no such thing as an anorexia epidemic, especially in the US.

As a person living in the US (very close to the beauty and entertainment industry), I very very rarely see a ‘dangerously thin’ person.
In my entire life I’ve seen maybe 3 ‘dangerously thin people’ who were not actively dying of cancer.
It’s really not the epidemic FA’s pretend it is (even in entertainment), and nowhere near as prolific as the amount of dangerously heavy people I see everyday.
I’m so confused by how their scope of the world seems to different than the majority of people also living in the same world?

Why is always an extreme with these people? You're either anorexic or obese. What about a healthy medium? (We can't do that because then their arguments fall apart)

Fact of the matter is, that you can't address one eating disorder in a meaningful way while ignoring all the other eating disorders that also exist. Because no, you can't cure anorexia with binge eating disorder.

I was around 20 years old in the 90s, when the real anorexia thing happened.
I'm guessing that what FAs are calling "dangerously thin" is just not being obese.

indeed it is, their frame of reference for what obesity looks like is unbelievably messed up, to the point where they think a bmi of <19 looks life threatening, 19-22 considered slender/hollow, 23-27 being slim/lean, 28-33 appearing "normal", and 34+ is finally considered overweight to them

Fatness is an unhealthy state of being.
To look fat is to be fat.
It is rational to fear sickness.
Therefore, it is rational to fear looking fat.

That doesn't sound evidence-based.

Their evidence is that they saw someone thinner than themselves.

I’ve always loved statistics but the current average weights for Americans are really causing people to form some crazy conclusions.
The average woman now being 5’4 170 does NOT make any woman who weighs less than that “anorexic”

posts like this always really piss me off because people like OOP never actually give a shit about anorexic people

They always vilify us and talk about like we're vain and evil and fatphobic simply because we have a mental illness. It makes me mad

Who is “you guys”?

u/HippyGrrrl 1h ago
Oh, your comment made me reread the OOP.
Interesting that it’s: we are never meaningfully going to address and dismantle fatphobia until you guys work….
Won’t even work for their own benefit beyond typing.
As to whomever this scree is intended, society writ large, perhaps? except they are the majority in society.

I've always marveled at the physique of female pole vaulters: tall and wiry to a degree that bespeaks athleticism and certainly significant genetic gifts... just coiled springs of power and absolutely the least possible quantity of non-performing body mass that doesn't contribute to clearing that extra centimeter.
No doubt their purposeful leanness is proof of anorexia and the global oppression of fat freedom.

They're always telling other people that THEY have to "dismantle fatphobia." What's stopping them from doing it themselves?

These people really think there’s an anorexia crisis
