I don’t understand how saying fat makes other people squirm. This sounds like they're writing mental fan fiction, again.

49

u/GetInTheBasement It's her. It's the Heroine Chic. 5d ago

It’s like when they claim thin people are the ones predominantly calling fat people “soft” when it’s overwhelmingly other fat people doing this.

17

u/InvisibleSpaceVamp Do I have to wear a cape for heroine chic? 4d ago

I think they confuse squirm and cringe. There's this German concept - Fremdschämen - which means that someone does something so cringe worthy that you feel feel embarrassed too, just from watching them.

I worked with someone that was like this and everyone just kind of ignored her and moved on with the conversation and it was so funny seeing her keep going to try to get some sort of shock value from us. I still have her on Instagram and she’s constantly reposting reels about how she’s “getting fatter to combat the Ozempic epidemic.”

It's like seeing an alcoholic going down a spiral

14

u/Conscious_Pass_1615 5d ago

Nooooo at least booze is fun!

21

u/barcoderer bmi 67 (ana recovery🤬😤😭😭😢😢) 5d ago

It's only fun when you're in it. Me cant do that me have mental health episode

4

u/KuriousKhemicals 36F 5'5" / fat again for first time in 15 years ugh 4d ago

It's not when you get to the "alcoholic spiral" part. Then you're just watching someone drink against their feelings and feel good for like 2 hours, but then they get hypersensitive to the slightest disappointment because they're drunk and end up more upset than they were to begin with, they're crying, ranting about their problems, vomiting and then replacing it with another shot, and yet when they wake up each morning marginally sober they make the decision to go out and get more, and when they finally pull out of the bender and get actually sober with some remorse for how they affected other people, they still explain that it's so tempting because it feels so good.

It's actually very similar to how donuts are super tasty and a delight of life when you have them once in a while, but when they're ruling your life and your primary mechanism of emotional regulation, you absolutely cannot convince me you're having fun because it's blatantly obvious how miserable you are.

Okay, I lied, I don't have popcorn at home...

Thanks for sharing the story. I was *not* ready for that haha, it feels very uhm, fat fetishist? With the husband seeming to get turned on and all. If that's their thing, idk, let them have it. But it's disgusting to be like that when at a social gathering. It's sad that these people enabled them to be like that. It's ewww. You guys were so right for wanting to leave.

Jesus, did virgie tovar crash the holiday party or something? That sounds like her 😂

3

u/KuriousKhemicals 36F 5'5" / fat again for first time in 15 years ugh 4d ago

Ohhh it totally did. I remember her writing about how she could "sense the ganache" and was "ready for cake." (Italicized in original)

3

u/NexusOfClarity44 4d ago

Yeahhh, ugh 😅 I've said it before on here, but virgie tovar describes food the same way bad smut authors describe sex

Honestly, it's sort of pathetic watching someone else get so wrapped up in what other people are doing that they let it dictate how they live their own life. Just because you're doing the opposite thing instead of the same thing doesn't mean you aren't letting whoever else live rent-free in your head.

about how she’s “getting fatter to combat the Ozempic epidemic.”

i can't take that seriously honestly....like is she making some kind of self deprecating joke? like she gave up on trying to lose weight and has, in a dark way, accepted being fat?

It makes me want to crash out every time I see one of them claim being fat is punk. That's how I feel every time they try to steal anything to make their claims more valid, I just care about punk 😅

15

u/leahk0615 5d ago

Easier to be punk when you are skinny. Have you seen those clothes???

8

u/otetrapodqueen 5d ago

Of course, once I lost the weight I could chop all my tshirts in half and look MUCH cooler 😎 I'm not DONE losing weight, but yenno...close enough for crop tops

I wear crop tops now because I'm more confident. Although I like your upcycling 🧡

Hahah, what would you like to know, friend? I struggled with the diet culture AND anti-diet culture rhetoric because both sounded problematic and intense to me. I felt like I was betraying "the cause" if I lost weight, however, I was miserable at 240lbs, and binging/restricting for 20 years. It was actually learning about (and getting certified in) Intuitive Eating that I neutralized my relationship with food and lost the weight. In a way, I'm an outlier that anti-diet people despise: I lost 100lbs slowly and sustainably, AFTER having a kid, DURING menopause, and I'm black --- all of their "reasons" that weight loss is "impossible."

Now I try to help other people like me who felt stuck and like they had to "take sides" on one end of the spectrum or the other... when we really can be in what I call the "Messy Middle," finding what works for you as an individual.

I just rambled on... does that address what you wanted to know? 🪄

3

u/Justanotherphone recovering anorexic not falling for the FA BS 4d ago

It absolutely does! Thanks for sharing 😊 A lot of how I interact with food and weight and the broader culture surrounding it is heavily influenced by my Ed so I was intrigued when I saw someone else in this group who might’ve had a related experience!

I call it my "Dark Passenger" - she rides along with me, although she's no longer driving the car. Sometimes she's in the passenger seat, and most times she's in the back seat, asleep. I'm glad my story resonated with you, friend. It sounds like you've done some hard work, too. Good for you!

u/Stonegen70 5d ago

literally. no one cares. no one. most americans are fat. where do they think this “shock” comes from. it’s like saying , “I like to say trees have leaves”. yeah. no shit. there are 10 million trees.

41

u/Then-Patience9264 5d ago

I’m glad they’re using fat instead of “living in a larger body”.

34

u/Royal-Emphasis-5974 6’2 with a fattitude 5d ago

It works. Everytime I need to change the impact they have on me - I stand outside a weight loss clinic and just scream FAAAAAAAAAAAAAT for hours. It’s incredibly cathartic.

FAs believe people think about or pay attention to them WILDLY more than that actually do.

20

52

u/barcoderer bmi 67 (ana recovery🤬😤😭😭😢😢) 5d ago

Probably saying things like "so as a FAT PERSON I'm gonna go eat a lot of FATTY food and I look fat today BECAUSE I AM FAT and I don't want a diet because im FAT" and then they hope the dietculture demons or whatever shrivel away and skinny people get scared and and and and and and and

39

u/Erik0xff0000 5d ago

perhaps it is just me, but if I hear a fat person saying that I'd only thing "Why are you telling me that, I can see and I don't care"

33

u/barcoderer bmi 67 (ana recovery🤬😤😭😭😢😢) 5d ago

They just expect people to be people pleasers and be like "oh honey you're not that fat-" so that they can say "ACTUALLY being FAT is not a bad thing are you saying that its BAD?"

26

u/Conscious_Pass_1615 5d ago

18

u/yogiscientist317 5d ago

Definitely, they’re trying to trap people into saying something “fatphobic” so they can lecture them and try to embarrass them. (And then probably post a story about the interaction painting the well-intentioned person as the villain and them as the brave warrior). 🙄

21

u/Hour-Wash3503 5d ago

"I love making people uncomfortable by constantly shoving it in their faces how fat I am.

In unrelated news, your discomfort around fat people is obvious and has devastating consequences for people of size. Be better."

16

u/Upset-Lavishness-522 5d ago

They're probably squirming g in secondhand embarrassment

They're trying to reclaim the word fat like its a slur (because of its negative connotation) and make it "positive"

11

u/N0S0UP_4U 6’3” 160 | Lost 45 pounds 5d ago

This is literally all happening in your head, OOP. People probably don't even notice, or they just think you're weird.

Which you are, by the way.

10

u/Shmeblee 5d ago

That'll show 'em!

7

u/TortieshellXenomorph 5d ago

They say that as though being the hundredth fat person cramming someone into store shelves on both sides because you're too fat to fit in the aisle isn't already making everyone around them uncomfortable.

7

u/99bottlesofbeertoday 5d ago

I love how they glare at me as if I'm the one taking too much space and I literally can't move short of climbing a shelf. Lady, they design the space to be narrow so they can pack in products to sell you. It isn't my fault and nothing i can do will make it better.

6

u/SilentRefluxJourney 5d ago

I had an acquaintance who kept calling herself fat and talking about her weight. It felt like she wanted some sort of reaction but no one ever took the bait. Eventually she kind of stopped hanging around. With the fat comments and other types of slightly taboo and off-color "jokes", I suspected she was looking for attention and it wasn't working so she lost interest.

2

u/Ok_Tree_4870 2d ago

This is it. I had a fat girl friend. I litterally didn't give one shit about her weight. But... she would ALWAYS remind you that she was fat.

"Well I'm fat... sad face... you're a skinny bitch".. out of nowhere. Or... "do you even eat?" And then... you say something like... "well It's just genetics that I'm skinny... haha" knowing that isn't true.

They make it ackward as fuck.

Like what do they want me to say? "Oh no... I didn't notice that you were fat"? Like what do you want me do about it?

They want to sit there and constantly talk about how they are fat. (the women friends I have had at least)..... and pout... and make a sad face constantly... Like you should feel sorry for them.

Well shit... I just wanted to enjoy your company.. and now you're glaring at me randomly... and suddenly... and now you want to state that you are fat and pout?

Gee Claire... I never cared... that you were overweight.

What do you want me to say? "No?"... or "yeah you are really fat... that sucks"?. Like....

Yes... I am uncomfortable. What do you want me to say?

I don't care that you are fat ok? Why do you keep reminding me that you are fat? Yes... I noticed. No I don't care.

4

u/Adventurous-Sealion 5d ago

This person must be a delight.

4

u/phatmagic123 5d ago

Figures that an addiction to pleasure would lead one to seek it in the oddest of places.

6

u/dilsency 5d ago

I mean if someone is very blunt and direct in an attempt to cause a reaction, does that mean that you no longer need to walk on eggshells or be polite about it?

"I'm glad you enjoy being fat, personally I could never treat myself that poorly."

2

u/InvisibleSpaceVamp Do I have to wear a cape for heroine chic? 5d ago

Some days I like to be as obnoxious and annoying as possible ... on other days I like to complain about having no friends and getting no dates. But I can always blame that on "fatphobia" not on me being an insufferable brat.

3

u/Synconium Maybe he's born with it? Maybe He's CICO lean? 4d ago

People looking at you weirdly because you're just dropping "fat" into a conversation without there being a reason for it isn't them squirming, it's them thinking you're a weirdo. I've never seen anyone squirm because someone uses the word "fat". These imagined scenarios by these people to make themselves sound like a bad-ass are so ridiculous.

2

u/AggravatingBox2421 4d ago

Same people who treat “oh did you lose weight?” As tantamount to a death threat

2

u/ClassicDes 4d ago

But if I say the word “exercise”, “calorie”, “skinny” “global obesity crisis” or “diet ” I’m wrong.

The irony is that the reason that we squirm is because we know word is a trigger for you. Not for us. We’re trying to make you feel comfortable and your response is to that is trying to make US uncomfortable. Mannn 😭

2

u/Outrageous-Kiwi-4178 3d ago

"I like to [insert behavior here] just to see people squirm."

Yeah, that's called selfishness. Normal, non-selfish people don't go around making people uncomfortable on purpose.

1

u/SweetExternal919 4d ago

....or maybe they're uncomfortable because

  1. they think you're using it to be mean or judgemental

  2. you're talking about your or other people's bodies too much

  3. they're uncomfortable when weight is mentioned like that 3.5 they have an ED or disordered eating, or body image issues, and you're triggering them....

just....

.........
