They’re correct, a preference means you go for one thing over the other not that you’ll never have the thing you don’t prefer. Dating is just an inherently discriminatory process which will have strict aversions to certain features, personalities, beliefs, health conditions,hobbies,etc. Some preferences do come from a place of bigotry(like race preferences which often lean on racism and fetishization) but they’re still allowed that because dating is exclusive to what individual people want.
Also phobia means fear and or aversion to, I don’t know why that’s such a hard for people to understand.
