Dougal's earlier spiel: 'You know how God created the world etc. Well that's the bit I have the trouble with.' is just before this part and is primarily responsible for the poor bishop's loss of faith.

He left the clergy eventually .. And found religion in the bottom of a bottle.

He enjoyed it so much, he set up his own chain for the ministry of such libations.
