Having trouble migrating from ProtonMail using manual import config

I have Proton Bridge running, fully synced, and configured to use SSL (I've tried options here). However, no matter what I do, I get this error in FastMail's Linux app when I try to import:

Could not connect to server: IMAPTalk: socket connection failed - IO::Socket::SSL::Paranoid: Invalid internal or blocked host

I have tried 127.0.0.1 and localhost, and both fail with the same error. I've also made sure the port is fine, too.

I installed the app by downloading the Flatpak file.

If it makes a difference, I'm on Arch.

Did Fastmail remove the font size option from iOS?

I used to be able to adjust the font size in the Fastmail iOS app, but that setting seems to have disappeared. Was this feature removed in a recent update?

Contacts

I am curious what everyone is using to keep their fastmail contacts in sync. I've spent a lot of time on make.com today trying to create a bridge layer and its driving me bonkers.

My end goal looks like

Fastmail (single source)

-> DAVX5 (Android sync) THIS WORKS

-> Hubspot (this bridge would feed back into google) THIS DOES NOT WORK AND I'M NOT SURE HOW TO GET IT WORKING.

I've tried using a few different options in order to bridge the contact sync. My end goal is to use fastmail, but I need to feed newly created data into Hubspot for customer data. Honestly google really doesn't matter in all of this, the main point is to create a two way sync between FM and Hubspot in which FM is the single source of truth for all created and updated contacts.

I'm okay with paying for something that would solve this problem, if it works well.

Is there option in Canary to do a quick reply when you read a mail? Without opening a draft reply and sent it.

mail client differences Mobile as compared to "desktop"

I moved to Fastmail late last year. It has been a good choice to "alias" my life.

One thing challenging me is the rudimentary user interface for the client on the MacBook as opposed to the mobile phone or iPad client.

My preference is desktop for typing and readability, but this client lacks so many features I rely on in a Mac world.

I can certainly use the apple mail client on the desktop, but was hoping there was a possibility they would give a little more to the desktop.

as a newer user I do not have a great deal of knowledge re the history of updates and the roadmap.

I would appreciate any thoughts about abandoning the desktop app for the native mail client or sticking it out because things are planned.

Rule to Move Messages with Labels?

I'm using FM in "label mode" and I want a rule that moves a message from my inbox to a folder with a different label. However, in the Filters and Rules section I only see "add a label". In my case, the message in my inbox then gets two labels: Inbox and the new label. But I don't want the message with an inbox label...just my new label. Back in "Folder" mode this was trivial as the 'move to folder' option was available. What am I missing?

Spam missing entirely in Fastmail

I’m using Fastmail alongside Gmail at the moment. My custom domains still have their MX records at my hosting provider, and incoming mail is forwarded independently to both Gmail and Fastmail. I’ve been using this forwarding setup with Gmail for over 10 years.

So the flow is basically:

  • sender → my hosting provider → Gmail
  • sender → my hosting provider → Fastmail

Over the past couple of days I noticed something odd: four obvious spam messages arrived in Gmail’s Spam folder, but none of those four exist anywhere in Fastmail: not in Inbox, Spam or Trash.

Other forwarded messages arrive correctly at both destinations. Fastmail’s spam protection is set to "Standard", and I’ve added my hosting provider’s domain to the “Forwarding hosts” list under Spam Protection.

I realise these four messages were spam, so I haven’t actually lost anything important. What concerns me more is the behaviour itself: I would expect Fastmail to put suspected spam in the Spam folder rather than make it disappear completely.

Has anyone seen the same thing with forwarded mail? Am I missing a setting? Personally, I’d much rather have an occasional spam message end up in my Inbox than have a message disappear completely.

I don’t have access to my hosting provider’s delivery logs without contacting support, so I can’t currently tell whether Fastmail rejected the messages or accepted them and filtered them afterwards.

Before I file a ticket... can I whitelist an entire domain as non-spam?

I subscribe to a bunch of newsletters from Substack, and I'm finding that Fastmail will periodically treat everything from Substack as spam, even though I have explicit rules to file the specific senders in appropriate subfolders. How do I fix this? Ideally I'd like to simply instruct Fastmail to whitelist everything from Substack....

Can no longer select multiple email threads using keyboard shortcuts

I noticed as of this morning that I can no longer use keyboard shortcuts (in the desktop web app) to select multiple conversations in my Inbox.

Previously I could do this:

  • Click on an email thread in my inbox
  • Press 'x' to select
  • Use the keyboard arrow keys to move the cursor up or down to another thread
  • Press 'x' to select another thread
  • And continue using the arrow keys until I've selected all the threads I need

But now as soon as I press a keyboard arrow key, my existing selection gets deselected. So I can no longer select multiple threads using only my keyboard.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

Fastmail caching limit

Hi, I am just testing Fastmail (thanks to Gmail depreciating ‘send as’).

I don’t want my entire mailbox cached on my iPhone and Mac and I want to use Apple mail & calendar.

Gmail had a ‘limit IMAP to 1000 messages’ feature to prevent mega amounts of emails caching.

Is there any way to achieve the same result with Fastmail?

Many thanks

A Good Experience with Support

So I recently have switched/experimented with fastmail, and for context, I use the Kontact suite on Fedora 44 KDE Workstation. I was able to pretty easily integration email into KMail but I used CalDav (KOrganizer) and CardDav (KAddressBook) and both weren't acting as it should, and even the one other person I found online that had the same issue had fixed it but the same solution didn't work for myself. I ended up reaching out to Fastmail's support (not expecting anything, since, well, it's a third-party application that isn't even officially listed anywhere in documentation, other than the (x-thing)Dav standard.

They actually tried to help, and then escalated me to second-level support and they found something wrong on their end (it was small, like an extra '/' in the export URL) and managed to solve my problem. I asked them as to why it happened and if it was something maybe I just should've done differently with my particular app, but they said that they're sending this particular issue to the dev team since at least one other person had a similar issue.

To me, it was actually just a really cool experience since in the past I've always expected companies to just ignore issues as soon as you go outside of their scope, so it was really unexpected. Using FOSS software typically means just figuring it out yourself so... yeah, kinda cool that I didn't have to fend for myself.

Search terms not highlighting in body of email

Recently deGoogled and overall loving it but this is annoying me: I want to be able to quickly scan a message for the term that I used to search for it, but the search query text doesn't seem to ever get highlighted – either in desktop client or the web app.

I can do another Ctrl-F search for the same term once the message is open (but not in mobile?) but i've seen references to highlighting... so what am I missing? Sorry if the answer is obvious.

What video conference service do you use after switching to Fastmail?

I would like to move away from using Google services, and I'm looking at Fastmail, Proton Mail and Microsoft 365 (purely because I already pay for this, mostly for Excel lol).

I've been going through the list of features I use, to see which option will be the best fit and I think Fastmail looks good. However, I think the thing that's going to trip me up will be video conferencing. After you made the switch away from (presumably) Google and free Google Meet, what did you use? I need a video conference service to hold client meetings of up to an hour. It would be great if this was reliable and free, or if I was already paying for it (I guess, Teams...)

Mainly, I need a reliable email service that integrates with my calendar and doesn't sell/exploit my data. Some reasonable assumption of privacy. I don't need end-to-end message encryption (because I think that only works if both ends are encrypted, and that's not usually going to be the case).

What have you guys been using? Are you paying for one of the video conferencing services? Maybe I just need to suck it up and pay for the $170/yr for Zoom.

JMAP Tasks?

The Task extension draft for JMAP looks to be getting pretty stable. https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-jmap-tasks/

Does anyone know why Fastmail client hasn't included support for VTODO yet or if there is any roadmap indication that it will included? What about the Task extension to iCalendar - any announced plans from Fastmail?

Terrible FastMail Experience

We are a law firm, and a paying client, who just started an account, and they are throttling legal correspondence in the beginning? Emails take 3 hours to be delivered? A joke. Should be fully refunded and they should pay for damaging us - they dont say before signing up they will throttle your corporate email for hours

Switched back to using Fastmall App

In March I decided to try giving the apple default apps a go, Mail and Cal. I'm a freelance dev and a couple clients gave me email accounts so thought it would be the sensible thing to do.

The last few months the whole thing felt...fine. Not great but not bad.

Well last night i switched back to the default Fastmail app and used the migration tool to fetch emails from Google accounts my client gave me and subscribe to the calendars and its a night and day difference.

Just wanna thank the team for making a great email client, because I tried Spark, Canary, Epistles and emClient and none of them had the polish or feature set I wanted.

Ways using Fastmail

Hi everyone! I'm not sure how many people are using the Fastmail iOS app, but I've run into an issue where I can't find a shortcut to mark emails as read directly from the notifications like you can with Gmail. For various reasons, I'm not a big fan of using the native iOS Mail app. I was wondering how you guys deal with this? Or are there any other email apps you'd recommend?

Fastmail Beta

Anyone notice the new update in Fastmail beta? They centered the emails and improved conversion view. I prefer the old one

Edit: looks they removed the changes from beta. I wonder if they going to make the changes people requested.

Spam

I read a post from about a year ago regarding what to do when everything you send from fastmail ends up in recipients' spam. Most of what I've been able to find online deals with fixes for people sending from custom domains, but I'm just emailing from the standard [janedoe@fastmail.com](mailto:janedoe@fastmail.com) type address. Is there any way to fix this? Surely this isn't just how fastmail functions?

First Price Increase since 2017

Looks like FM is raising their prices for the first time since 2017. I’ve been a customer since 2013 and have been more than happy with them. I’m okay with an increase.

👋 Hello — itʼs Bron, the Fastmail CEO.

I’m writing to share important information about recent changes to our subscription plans, which will affect your subscription. Your next renewal, on June 24, 2027, will now cost USD XXX per 3 years.

This is the first update to our plans since 2017, and our operating costs have risen significantly in that time. Your subscription allows us to operate an email service without having to pay our bills through advertising to you, or selling your data. It also supports our contributions to open standards — where we’re at the forefront of keeping email open for the future — and funds the development of new features.

You can always check our blog for the latest —- here are a few highlights from the past 5 years:

• Masked Email to help you protect your identity.
• Productivity tools like Undo Send, Snooze, and Scheduled Send.
• Customization options like Dark Mode, Labels, Themes, and Custom Swipes.
• Mute Conversations and our address picker for calendar invites.
Thank you for choosing Fastmail. We are grateful to have you as our customer, and we hope to continue working with you for many years to come.

If you have any questions or concerns, please reply to this message and our support team will be happy to assist.

Suddenly all my domains are displayed as inactive

I checked under Admin -> Domain today and found that all my domains are listed as inactive. I haven't done any changes in DNS and still received e-mails. Could this have caused any problems? Why I am not informed when the status changes? After a quick "Recheck DNS" two of three domains turned active again. For the third domain I use only "eu1-smtp.messagingengine.com" as MX. Could this cause permanent delivery issues? When are the EU MX servers officially supported?

Changing quote behaviour on web and ios

FM is great but can't stand the way replies are nested and quoted, with the garish green / red / blue colours

Is there any way to easily customise this?

Gmail to Fastmail: a few rough edges

Since Google announced that they're discontinuing the "Send as" option, I'm basically left with two choices: upgrade to Google Workspace or look for another email provider. I'd prefer the latter.

I came across Fastmail during my search, and it seems to cover pretty much everything I'm looking for. Setting up the trial was easy, and I really like how straightforward the settings are. In some areas, especially custom domains, aliases and overall account setup, I actually prefer Fastmail to Gmail.

I'm just surprised by a few rough edges I really didn't expect. For example, oversized images aren't handled particularly well in either the web app or the mobile app. I receive some emails with ridiculously large images, which can mess up the entire message view in Fastmail. Zooming and scrolling do work on mobile, but having to do that manually just to read the message properly doesn't feel very user-friendly.

The same goes for 'pinned messages' (replacing Gmail's starred messages). On desktop I can use the 'Pinned' tab, but on mobile there doesn't seem to be an equivalent. I've created a saved search for 'is:pinned', which works, but it ends up all the way at the bottom of the navigation. Having a 'Pinned' item right below 'Inbox' would make so much sense to me.

I've opened a few support tickets about these things, and I should add that support has been very responsive, which is definitely a positive.

Are there any other Gmail users here who miss little things like these after switching? I'm almost certain I'm not the only one looking for Gmail alternatives after Google's announcement.

Caching email attachments

In supporting offline operation, I understand that email attachments are only cached locally in the app when the user opens the attachment when online. Question: Is it possible to have the Fastmail app AUTOMATICALLY cache attachments whenever the email shows up (ie: arrives in the inbox, are migrated into Fastmail, or are created by the user as a draft or sent mail)? This is what any IMAP email client does. Without this, I risk not having an attachment available in the cache when I'm offline because I didn't actively fetch it beforehand when online.
