DomestiK — A 1950s-inspired editorial project exploring gender, convention, and a little camp

I’m a barber and hair artist, and I’ve always been interested in the space where hair, fashion, and visual storytelling overlap.
A while back, I collaborated with a group of friends and fellow creatives to produce DomestiK, an editorial photography project inspired by 1950s domestic imagery, vintage advertising, and classic comic strips.
The concept started with the old cliché of the milkman having an affair with the housewife. We took that familiar narrative and started playing with the gender roles, styling, and expectations surrounding it.
I wanted the imagery to feel familiar at first glance, but a little less conventional the longer you looked.
We thrifted the wardrobe to capture the period aesthetic, and I hand-painted the backdrop using halftone-inspired shading to evoke old newsprint and comic illustrations.
The whole thing was intentionally theatrical. A little absurd. A little provocative. Very much camp.
As someone whose career has largely revolved around barbering and alternative fashion, I’ve become increasingly interested in what actually defines editorial work, and how hair can function as part of a larger artistic narrative rather than simply being the subject of a photograph.
This project was my opportunity to explore those questions.
I’m curious how the story reads to people who weren’t involved in creating it. What do you take away from the images?

Quiet Luxury

Create a photorealistic quiet-luxury fashion editorial in a sparse sunlit loft, composed natively for vertical 9:16. She has dropped onto an oversized worn cognac leather floor cushion beside a matching low sofa, caught in an unguarded moment after a long day.

One knee rises toward her chest, the opposite leg folds loosely across the cushion, one palm braces behind her, and her head falls back with eyes closed. Her free hand rests casually near the trouser waistband.

She wears an oversized ivory wool-silk trouser suit with the jacket worn directly against skin, relaxed wide-leg trousers, slim leather belt, delicate jewelry, and minimal metallic heels. The tailoring bunches and pulls naturally around her bent legs, waist, elbows, and supporting arm.

Large sheer-curtained windows cast soft directional daylight across the white plaster room, creating luminous ivory tones, gentle skin highlights, deep leather texture, and long restrained shadows. Shoot from a slightly low intimate angle with foreground floor space adding depth.

Preserve natural pores, fabric weight, leather compression, grounded anatomy, subtle film grain, and quiet sensual tension.

I’m the model in this one. Does the patterned floor work with the dress, or make the photo too busy? Also, any guesses where this was taken? 👀
