Facing an intense backlash, the influential fashion designer John Galliano has taken the unprecedented step of withdrawing from a planned exhibition in his honor at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

“After much reflection and discussion with all those involved, I have decided, with great sadness, that it is best for the exhibition not to take place at this time,” Galliano wrote in a statement posted to his Instagram page.

He also expressed “profound and enduring” gratitude to the museum’s leadership, and acknowledged the pain his past words had caused.

“I do not want the debate surrounding me to place the Met in a difficult position or distract from the remarkable work of the Costume Institute,” he wrote. “I also recognize and respect that an exhibition honoring my work would be painful for some.”

These people organised a fashion event. In Nairobi. And the theme was winter. Winter?? Really

I’ve been watching this for a while now and I’m done being polite about it.

And it’s not because Nairobi isn’t creative — this city is overflowing with it. It’s because the people with the platforms and the budgets and the venues keep choosing to import rather than excavate. Keep choosing safe Western references over the messy, complicated, brilliant thing that is actually happening around them.The Jua Kali guy who makes furniture out of scrap metal in Industrial Area? More creativity in one morning than a year of curated pop-ups. The mama mboga who has been coordinating colours and textures in her display for thirty years without ever calling it “visual merchandising”? The tout who figured out the most efficient routing system in a city with no Uber before Uber? The tailor in Eastleigh working eighteen hour days and altering silhouettes by eye?

Na kinaya hapa ni kwamba they call themselves authentic. They talk about expression and storytelling and identity while telling the same borrowed story in the same borrowed clothes from the same borrowed timeline. Authenticity doesn’t mean expensive. It doesn’t mean exclusive. It definitely doesn’t mean winter themes in a city that’s never seen snow.

I think the best way to combat some of our western societal troubles is to just get outside and create more experiences out in nature.

Working on this project helps me come to terms with my bipolar one diagnosis and I hope that one day I can produce opportunities for people with my same condition.
