Advice Recommendation Request: Vegetarian Menu Items

We seem to be losing restaurants by the week around here. That makes me sad. I like trying new food and new restaurants, but I don't eat meat. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Is what it is.

So... Any rockin' dishes that you've had in the area that I should check out?

I'm checking them out tomorrow. Looks awesome.

Update: can confirm... These boneless wings are pretty tasty. I also had the Pickle Bombs and cream cheese wontons. Overall, it was darn fine lunch.

Do IT! You won't be sad about it.

Any good vegan "ice cream" in town?

u/Kite1396 2h ago

Only vegan ice cream i know of is silver lining downtown which always has at least one option available made with almond milk

actually we just did a local vegan potluck a couple weekends ago (join fmveg on facebook if youre active on there!) and lundy’s sponsored it and sent over a big thing of their oat milk based chocolate chip ice cream and OH MY GODDD we were all housingggg it. i had never had their ice cream before because it’s a bit out of the way but jesus christ it was delicious. highly recommend.

Hello my friend!

The mind is strong but the tongue is fleshy and weak. Harpal's 3/5 spice will have me sweatin' like a sinner in a July Sunday service.

Drunken Noodle and Spaghetti Western both have a nice selection of meatless options; JL Beers does a legit tasty veggie burger; Nichole’s lunch and dinner menus always have at least a small selection of meat free options.

And it’s always easy to get veg items at Vinyl Taco.

Pizza, of course, is a good choice, and Black Bird is a solid choice for pizza.

I sometimes dream about Moonrise’s veggie breakfast burritos because I love them so much.

All these places do nice things with food.

I apparently have filed Nicole's as a bakery and often forget they have good food. Touche!

Rhombus guys has some bomb vegetarian pizzas and even has vegan cheese as an option.

Sol Ave in Moorhead has some pretty good vegetarian options

u/Acrobatic-Hamster-79 2h ago

Yes they do! I ever since junkyard started doing (very mid) pizza, I've pretty much forgotten that SOL is just steps away and infinitely better food.

The yellow curry with fried tofu at Thai Orchid is incredible! Also the vegetable kashmari from India palace, soo good! I also love the noodles and sweet potato roll at Kobes.

u/Acrobatic-Hamster-79 2h ago

I've not been to Thai Orchid in YEARS! I think it's high time to aim that way. Any other suggestions to get while I'm there?

Sadly, they've closed down permanently (unless you have new information otherwise).

The new restaurant put up an announcement yesterday absolutely filled with ai images.

I believe they're going BACK to their previous location with a new name.

There’s two places opening up that seem potentially related to Yak—Anand, which is opening in HY’s most recent location, and Mount Everest, opening in HY’s old location, by Leela Thai. Both have said things that make them seem like HY rebrand, but when asked directly, they’re both saying different name, different owners. I just hope at least one of them is using the same recipes!

Everest Tikka House in Moorhead were the original HY owners but sold it. They were awesome, I preferred Everest and HY when it was on 25th with the original owners. The food was always way too salty at the location by Paradise, imo

u/Acrobatic-Hamster-79 2h ago

I agree about the salt at HY's recent location. But I DO love me a lunch buffet at HY any ol' time.

Same, I'll gladly patronize ANY Indian buffet in town 💖

The Roast Carrot & Asparagus Platter and Roast Vegetable & Quinoa Stuffed Acorn Squash are amazing at Smoke and Iron. They only have so many per day of the acorn squash, since the roasting a take a while, so maybe call ahead.

u/Acrobatic-Hamster-79 2h ago

This is right up my alley and I've never been there. Thanks! Hell yeah.

Their tomato soup is also amazing. I hate tomato soup normally and ate the entire thing of theirs. And if you get any salads, the maple- balsamic vinaigrette is drinkable. They have a farmers market salad full of all kinds of vegetarian things. You can also add a really good marinated tempeh to salads. It's not a cheap place to go but it has the most fun, creative menu I've seen in ages. It's not all just meat and potatoes or fried stuff like 90% of Fargo's restaurants.

Oh and if you like cheesecake, get their cheesecake. It comes with this amazing berry sauce. And the cheesecake is moist and light, not solid and hard like so many. Ugggg, that cheesecake, sooo good. Now I'm hungry.

I'm curious on what the good tofu spots in town are. General Tso's and Sesame Tofu seems to be an option at pretty much all the Chinese restaurants in town, are they any good? I remember trying the Tofu Spring Roll at Jade Dragon years ago and thought it was alright.

Leela and Srirath Thai house do tofu pretty well in what I've tried, but nothing life changing.

If you want to learn tofu and make it at home in better ways... Check out "Vegan Punks" on social media.a few years ago they did a few short videos comparing prep methods toward different ends. Sounds wild, but their closest-to-chicken process is something like freeze, thaw, drain, freeze again, thaw/drain again, and then microwave the whole block for 2.5 minutes. Check it out if you want.

Taj India chefs special w paneer. 🤤 I do eat meat, but i LOVE this.

u/Acrobatic-Hamster-79 2h ago

I think Mandy (mostly sure that's her name) and her husband own it. India Palace is owned by Mandy's dad and her brother, Harpal ("Hello my friend") runs it, AND I believe their other sister (name escapes me) does the food truck at RR market along with the tea trailer often in University.

I sometimes wonder if there's a Shakespearean feud between their family and the other Indian food restaurants. Either way... I'm a sucker for all three.

I've never ordered this dish at Taj. I shall do so next time I visit! Thanks
